A Commencement...

Yesterday, at a memorial service for JMHS alum Michael Matthews, I looked around at the faces of the 1st AME Church on Raymond in Pasadena and I was reminded of just how blessed I was to have gone to Muir. As each speaker rose to share their precious memories of a good man, it was the diversity of race, religion and ethnicity that told a larger story, not only about the man, but the school from which he and I graduated. During the service we were remind that they call graduation Commencement, which seems odd at the time, as it seems more like the end of something than the beginning. But it is an accurate description of the event, we are commencing into our adult life as we file up to the bleachers of the Rose Bowl and it isn't until much later in life that we recognize that our diverse education was the best preparation for this new beginning.
