About this project
SAYS SETH - THE BOOK: The world according to a six year old. Belches, farts and poop. Penis, boobs and butt. All the great 'taboo' topics plus food, love, unanswered questions and more. Life observed and explained through the words of one very funny boy during the time he was four to six. Plus a bit of commentary by his Daddy. All in Twitter-sized text bytes of 140 characters or less. Over 500 briliant observations guaranteed to make everyone who has ever spent time with a child to laugh uncontrollably and spit the beverage of choice through their noses.
It's perfect for all those parents who always meant to write down what their kids said when they were young. Memories of your own children, grandchildren or family will flood back. And you WILL laugh.
To avoid any confusion, I want to note that this IS NOT a book that includes photos of Seth. It includes his very funny quotes, my after-comments, plus illustrations he drew for chapters. I'm thinking you're more interested in the funny stuff he says that reflects his viewpoint as a child, not getting photos of Seth.
THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK: Seth is a very special boy...and he may well be the funniest kid ever. He is cute, smart, engaged and inquisitive. I wanted to give him a gift he could treasure forever, so when he started talking, I wrote his comments down in a hard bound journal. My plan was to give it to him later in life or to read them aloud and embarrass him at family functions, in front of his date for the prom...you understand. Being a writer myself, I added a brief upfront description to explain the context or add a sarcastic afterthought. I've now filled nearly two volumes with his funny comments.
People laughed when I read his comments out loud, and wanted to read more of his comments. So I created a web site www.SaysSeth.com (check the righthand tab on the site for a history of the quotes I've posted) and a Twitter feed to post them online. After some encouragement from others, I decided his comments truly were bookworthy. I started out writing a book applying his quotes to business, but decided to finish a book just printing his quotes first.
I sent out a few query letters to book companies, and received very positive feedback in the rejections. They thought the book was a great idea but without an established following of tens of thousands of people, the book companies won't publish it. Even if it is hilarious.
So I decided to take this a different way. I'll go straight to people who would most enjoy reading it. And that gives me the ability to control all of the book elements, including the look and feel. I am including Seth's illustrations for the chapter breaks. And I want HIM to feel special, that there is a book that HE helped write, that other people read.
We're ready to publish! The writing is complete, the layout is done. I've designed most of the promo materials...we're ready to go out and make the world laugh with us, and re-experience the magic of childhood.
Seth and I hope you'll consider supporting the project both for us and for yourself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE CHILD: Seth was our final adoption attempt after a couple of heartbreaking failures, including one where a couple conspired to take as much money from us as possible before ripping a child out of our home after we cared for him for three months. Even Seth's adoption was rocky, with a year long custody battle. In the end, the court made the decision that it was in Seth's best interests to be adopted by us and granted us final custody.
Seth is loved by a large extended family of relatives and friends. He was meant to be part of my family. He has taught me lessons of love that one can't possibly understand until he or she is a parent. I am the luckiest man alive and I try to share that with everyone I meet...and with Seth.
Help us publish this very funny book!
WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR? If Seth had his way, we'd probably buy bacon. A lot of bacon. And some action figures. But that won't be how we'll use the money raised from sponsorships. The money raised will be used for:
- Book production costs including proofs, e-book conversion, ISBN purchase, and all those detailed items that are necessary when publishing a book
- An initial print run of the soft cover book for fulfilling sponsorships and promotional marketing
- A print run of the limited edition hard cover book for fulfilling sponsorships
- Marketing functions, like printing the trading cards for promotions and sponsorship fulfillment, PR and advertising materials, web site hosting and maintenance, etc. And advertising
- The plan is to give Kickstarter pledgers a special edition cover that will only be available for their copies.
OTHER NOTABLE INFORMATION: In the video, the song and music you hear is one that I wrote for Seth a couple of years ago. I wanted to create something from my heart that I could give to Seth and make him feel special every night - and that he could revisit when he grows up. After all, how many kids have their own song? A local musician (and now my friend) Jim Imbesi heard something he liked in it and agreed to work on it. It's his voice and instrument talents you hear. He is awesome, don't you think? The end of the video includes more of the song vocals. Check out his band Voice In The Mirror on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Voice-In-the-Mirror/111353708878941.
Let me know if you like the song, okay? You can find SaysSeth on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/saysseth#!/pages/Says-Seth/153588471319549
