Old friends, new friends and fans:
I am Gary Sunshine (real name) and I’m here to raise funds to help finance the recording and release of my new record, tentatively titled Beer, Picks & Old Records. With the help of some friends and a few guitars (plenty of electrics), the plan is to have it completed later this year.
It’s been a long road (real long) with plenty of ups & downs, life, guitars, record deals (RCA, Columbia, Hollywood, Metal Blade), bands (Circus of Power, NY Loose, The Silos, Screaming Sneakers), recording sessions and collaborations (Guns N‘ Roses, Gravity Kills, Steph Casey). A few high profile auditions, a couple of mistakes here and there, some cool tours with cool bands, and more than a few unusual moments and memories have led me to this moment and this record.
For your contribution to this campaign I have set up some great rewards, including early downloads, signed CD’s & lyric books, picks, t-shirts, guitar lessons, unreleased songs, videos and more.
Lately I’ve been pretty busy down in my humble, dark, damp and way too noisy basement studio, writing and recording songs. A lot of songs.
Armed with the occasional beer, a whole lotta coffee, disappearing guitar picks and a few old records for inspiration, I’ve come through it somehow, with a whole lotta songs.
Did I mention the spiders?
The songs tend to lean on the personal side of things, bittersweet at times, a few colorful characters and situations, usually based on something, or someone I can hardly remember, or can’t help but remember.
I wear my roots and influences proudly on my sleeve and in my songs. NYC, Rock & Roll, Blues, Punk music, R&B, Americana, Al Green, Dylan, The Stones, Steve Earle, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Gil Scott-Heron, Leonard Cohen, Bad Brains, Jimmy Page, The Replacements, Muddy Waters and The Clash for starters.
My hope is that some of you reading this may know of someone who enjoys supporting the arts, and in this case, my contribution to the “arts”. If you have the means and would like to help I will be forever grateful. I will also be grateful if you simply have a listen and keep in touch. If you feel like it spread the word. Sharing this campaign is key to getting the word out and this record getting made and released.
I have thirty to forty songs I’m considering for this project. I may be asking for some help selecting songs, I’m aiming to get it down to 12 songs.
Here are the details step by step
- Final song preparations & pre-production
- Record! (I have a great studio in Los Angeles penciled in for late Winter/early Spring)
- (Note to self) Bring the electrics!
- Mix & master
- Take a nap
- Manufacture and distribute the CD
- Play a select number of special live shows in late 2019
If we exceed our goal, the extra funds will go towards the marketing and promotion of the record.
If by chance, we go over our goal and raise enough to fund a second CD of outtakes, oddballs, lo-fi versions, covers and demos, I may do that too. Now that would be cool.
This I can guarantee.
Kickstarter is a unique platform in that we must meet our financial goal in order to get the funding. So in order for me to bring this project to life I am in need of some help.
I will make this as interactive as I can, and will be sharing videos, demos, thoughts and stories, along the way. I want everyone to feel and be a part of this project. It’ll be fun.
Here are a few recent ”demos” of songs being considered for the record.
Thanks for checking this out and stop on by for updates. Please feel free to share this campaign with your friends. Let’s go make a record!
Risks and challenges
Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform, so if we meet our goal in 30 days, it’s on. If we do not, no monies get spent. 30 days can go real fast so I can use all and any help I can get sharing this and/or helping to fund it. Again, many thanks and I’ll be in touch.
