“Why did you cancel it?”
Going over the original Kickstarter campaign I would say I was very green. There were a number of issues that arose over the course of the original Kickstarter but to up a long story short. I didn’t feel like I was giving the best value and quality that I could have to the backers.
“What changes have you made to the game since you cancelled it?”
There have been quite a few changes to Reign since the original Kickstarter. In terms of mechanics, a lot of playtesting has be done to better balance the game and to hone the graphic design and usability of the cards. A lot of those changes where thanks to people like Wez (Designer of COGZ) and Joel (Designer of Unfair) giving me great advice.
In terms of components I have added tokens for legitimacy to help with ease of play and I have decided on 300gsm black core cards instead of blue core to maintain a high quality game. Finally, in terms of price, I have almost half the cost for international backers (more on that later).
“What changes to the campaign have you made?”
I have completely reworked the backing tiers for simplicity. One thing that stands out this time around is the Frist Wave Shipping Tier, people who back early will get their copy of Reign hot off the production line and sent out first.
The cost of Reign is only $18 USD instead of $20 USD (accounting for exchange rates) and this includes free shipping worldwide. Shipping was a major cost for the previous campaign if you were outside of the USA. Luckily this time around we are using the tried and true method of air fulfilment through China (as used by Monsterous). Not to mention, I have graphically improved the campaign to feel a lot more in line with the theme.
“Why so long between the cancellation of the first iteration and this one?”
A long unlucky run with publishers. After the first campaign we went to every Australian (yes we are Aussie) board game convention we could. Over that time we had two different publishers interested in Reign. The first one didn’t work out and the second one ceased functioning in a publishing capacity. The original plan was to launch last year.
“What do you feel that you’ve learned in the process?”
A metric ton of humility. If I were to go back two years ago knowing what I know now I would tackle myself to the ground and, after explaining the winning lottery numbers, tell myself to learn more before starting the Kickstarter project. I have gone out of my way to learn from the best in Australia from manufacturing to graphics design to art and I believe Reign has benefited from that.
