Scouts of the Wyrdwood Forest (Canceled)
A family-friendly, storytelling adventure game about modern kids exploring the enchanted forest, helping Fae Folk, and earning badges!
I started designing Scouts of the Wyrdwood Forest for my own children (now in 3rd and 6th grade) based around our interests in folklore, scouting, and exploring the woods near our home in central Ohio.
After much research; many revisions; long conversations with other parents, kids, and educators; and playtests with both kids and adults— we are now ready to bring our creation to gaming families everywhere! But to do that, we need your help.
Scouts of the Wyrdwood Forest encourages and enables parents to easily engage with young gamers (ages 8 to 14), but it is NOT just a kids game.
Plenty of "For Kids Only" games exist already, but we wanted an experience that was fun for the whole family, could scale to both the players' skills and expectations, and was not at all about killing things for profit and xp.
The system is robust enough(and the Wyrdwood is deep enough) that this game can be enjoyed by players of any age! Groups of parents with their kids, adults only, teenagers, and even creative middle-schoolers can take the game as written and run adventures that fit their own table. We have hosted many playtest sessions for all age ranges, and every troop has had a blast!
If you want a deeper insight to the game we are making, please download our FREE beta preview, a full color, 26-page pdf containing character creation (cgen) and the basic rules, by clicking here or on the image below!
If you would rather just listen along, we also have an audio podcast of our recent playtest sessions (with grown-up entertainers, designers, and gamers) available at: https://wickedclevergames.podbean.com/
Players assume the role of Wyrdscouts, kids whose families have been blessed by the magical inhabitants of the Wyrdwood. They might be connected to the graceful Aelfar, the dirt dwelling Gruvkin, the ancient Giants, the tiny Pixies, the nimble Fauns, the mysterious Dryads, the watery Naiads, or the playful Puka. This ancestry gives them cool special abilities to use inside the forest, and they can gain more abilities as they master their badges.
One person (usually an adult) will take on the role of Story Guide and serve as the narrator/facilitator for the scouts' adventures. They are responsible for weaving the story, teaching the rules, and keeping the game flowing.
When playing with kids, other adults will assume the role of a Troop Mascot; a magical animal that can guide and help the scouts, but won't directly solve their problems for them.
Scouts are forbidden from shedding Fae blood in the Wyrdwood, so they must find other solutions to the challenges that arise there. While Wyrdscouts can be harmed in the game, they are usually not at risk of being killed. Setbacks will happen, as all great tales need some tension, but nobody has to worry about the loss of their beloved character.
We have created our own, original system for use in Scouts of the Wyrdwood Forest and other future RPG releases. It is narrative-focused and uses ten-sided dice for all mechanical resolutions. Only the players will ever need to roll the dice, as they are the ones central to the story, though it helps if each player has their own set.
A scout creates a dice pool for any risky actions based on the Virtue they are using (Bravery, Charm, Cleverness, or Helpfulness) and the relevant Badge.
The player who announces an action is always the one to roll, but other scouts are encouraged to assist their troop-mates by lending them a bonus dice in situations where their character could also be of help.
We are raising funds to create a Core Rulebook, which will be an 8x10 hardback book with full color illustrations by four, talented female illustrators, offset printed in the USA. (International backers will get PoD copies, printed and shipped via DriveThruRPG.com)
We will also be creating a prop-like companion book, the Troop Journal, which will be a 6x9 softcover book of 80+ pages.
Of course, we are also offering pdf copies of both books.
The money raised during the Kickstarter will be used to commission new art from the artists, hire additional authors and an editor, and fund the actual printing of the two books and the creation of the KS Exclusive extras(shown in the add-on section below.)
- Each pack of stickers comes with enough badges for six scouts to place on their character sheets.
- The dice are custom engraved d10s created by Chessex. They will come in a set of ten with a gorgeous moss-colored velvet bag.
- The "fairy" stones are glass gem-drops handcrafted in Columbus, OH.
Shipping is NOT being collected during this Kickstarter. Actual shipping charges (with the exception of International rewards) will be collected via a pledge manager in September of 2019. (Scroll to the bottom for estimated shipping charges.)
Add-ons are available to all backers at any pledge level. You can add the total to your KS pledge here or add them to the pledge manager after the Kickstarter. All backers will receive an invitation to the pledge manager via their kickstarter listed email, several weeks after the Kickstarter itself completes.
For those new to all this, a pledge manager is a 3rd party backer management/survey/shopping cart tool that allows creators to accurately calculate individual shipping charges and organize the information needed to fulfill rewards, and for backers to customize their pledges so that they each get exactly what they are expecting.
If you need multiple books, extra stickers or dice, or even copies of our older games, you will be able to add those via the pledge manager.
More stretch goals will be revealed as the campaign progresses!
The Core Rulebook is already going to have everything the game needs to be a complete, playable experience. We are not planning to dangle rules and content behind higher goals. Our target is for the full game.
Instead, at each stretch goal level we will bring on another author to write a short story in the Troop Journal. Some of them will even be adding sketches and illustrations to their story, to help the book breathe and grow as a real-world prop.
We will also have upgrades to the physical nature of the core book, such as ribbon bookmarks, more art, and printed end-sheets at various levels. These are the little touches that turn this from a mere gaming book into a cherished heirloom you can pass on to the next generation.
We have assembled a great team of artists and authors to help bring this project to fruition. More authors will be unlocked in stretch goals as the project funding progresses.
We would love to have shipping be seamless and hassle free. Unfortunately, the tools on Kickstarter don't handle the realities of shipping multiple rewards very well. Many other companies have folded due to underestimating the unique challenges shipping rewards can create, and we have lost significant money in the past by trying to include shipping in the pledge levels.
We aren't Amazon, so the best solution we have is to collect the actual shipping charges based on each backer's address and the weight of their books and add-ons, after the Kickstarter ends. We will collect this money via a separate pledge manager and invitations to join it will be sent out approximately three weeks after the Kickstarter period is complete.
You must fill out the pledge manager survey in order to receive any rewards.
Estimated USPS Shipping Charges
- 2 Books Only = $5 (Media Mail)
- 2 Books + Anything Else = $9 (USPS Priority with Tracking)
- Each additional set of 2 books +$4
International printing and shipping of books only is being handled through DriveThruRPG.com.
These book will not have ribbon book marks or printed end sheets (even if these stretch goals are unlocked) but the shipping charges are included in the International Backer pledge level. VAT may be charged locally upon arrival and is not included in the pledge.
At this time we are unable to ship the other rewards (stickers and dice) to international backers at anything close to a reasonable cost. If you really want the whole package, please contact us directly, but understand that international shipping from the US starts at $26.
Risks and challenges
This is our 7th Kickstarter, and the 3rd time working with the same printing company for the books, so we are confident that we have budgeted correctly and planned out an accurate timeline of production.
However, this is our first time working in full color and with outside authors. We have built flexibility into the schedule for the finishing of art and stretch goal writing, but delays may still happen. If they do, we promise to be upfront about it and keep all of the backers in the loop.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
