What is this all about?
I started my game store, GrandLAN Gaming, almost six years ago - before I even had the idea to start Gaming Paper. One of the events I have loved as a participant and as a game store is Free RPG Day. Free RPG Day always includes offerings from the industry giants like Paizo and Wizards. It also includes some new games that companies want to get into the hands of the players, like Dungeon Crawl Classics from Goodman Games last year – it was too cool. Free RPG Day is always a very busy day and a very brisk sales day for GrandLAN – last year was exceptionally busy.
As a publisher/manufacturer I have always wanted to put something Gaming Paper related into the Free RPG Day mix. Whatever we submitted had to be special to stand out in such esteemed company. I signed up for the lowest level sponsorship (one copy for each store) of FRPGD (have to shorten “Free RPG Day” for my hunt and peck typing style) and began brainstorming for something great, special, and personal to include in FRPGD.
Finally, I came up with an idea.
I have been playing RPGs for a long time. My GM, Jeremy Worst, and I met while we were both working at a local bar in Grand Rapids over twenty years ago. Jeremy was reading a Robert Jordan novel and I asked him if he played RPGs. He invited me to play with his group and he has been entertaining me with his creative and unique adventures for over two decades.
So, I asked Jeremy and he agreed to write an adventure for all of you for FRPGD and I know you will enjoy his writing and creativity as much as I do.
Next, I spoke to Cartographer Supreme, Christopher West. I want to tie this back to an existing Gaming Paper product (after all this is a business and I want it to spur sales a bit). So the maps Jeremy is using for his adventure are from the Mega Dungeon 1 map pack. That means they are 8 ½ x 11 maps at a 1”=5’ scale. They essentially become your play area. There will be approximately ten of these map pages included with the adventure and you are welcome to use them again and again and photo copy them for personal use. Christopher has agreed to modify the maps to fit this adventure – so these are alternative maps that you can use with the original Mega Dungeon 1 maps. The maps included with our FRPGD offering will use the same geomorphic pattern and fit seamlessly with the original pack.
Finally, many of the customers at GrandLAN attend a local art school, Kendall School of Art and Design, in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. I have lined up amazing student artists to do the art in the adventure. These are talented young people who are just getting started. Some play RPGs and others don’t. It will be a very unique look at fantasy art. For some this will be their first commissioned artwork. I can’t wait.
So why kickstart?
I know not all game stores participate in FRPGD (they should). I know there will not be enough copies to go around at the participating game stores. To kill two birds with one stone I turned to Kickstarter. First bird, players who will not be able to go to a store and pick up the adventure (because their stores don't participate – or because there are too few copies) can get this special adventure right after FRPGD. Second bird, I want to offer more than one copy per store for FRPGD – but printing is expensive. To offset the cost we are using Kickstarter. For every pledge made to this Kickstarter a number of copies of the adventure (defined in the pledge levels to the right) will be added to the FRPGD retailers kits.
Where are we now?
The adventure is written! Many monsters that I have not encountered before. This is a short adventure into a corrupted nature shrine – so many plant creatures , exciting battles, and interesting encounters.
Artwork is in process.
Maps are being redrawn as we speak.
Playtesting! My group playtested it last weekend and we had a blast. Another of GrandLANs regular playgroups is testing this weekend.
Editing is in process.
Layout, Printing, packaging, and sending it in!
Thanks for your support. We are excited to get this to as many stores and players as possible.
Both! I forgot to include that detail in the rewards. You get both.
You can mix match in any combination. I will get the detail from you when the Kickstarter closes.
$10. Meant to include that in the reward levels. Oops. The other option suggested by a backer is to go PDF only and save the shipping. This only applies to products that are available in PDF.
