About this project
Gaming In Color is a full length feature documentary on one of the fastest growing communities in the fastest growing entertainment sector in the world: Gaming. For too long gamers have been painted in a very specific light, and the mosaic of gamers have lacked the diversity of minorities, queers, women, and members of LGBT communities.
We want to create this film in order to take a closer look at the challenges and the growth of these communities in the gaming world.
As time passes and as technology rapidly changes, what once could only be housed in a huge arcade cabinet can now run on a slim gadget in your pocket. A form of entertainment once rare is now ubiquitous and commonplace. For something so huge, there's still a very narrow perception of what a "gamer" is and it's time that we show the world there's more than just the stereotype.
The gaming world is far more diverse than the media would have you think. To counter this, we'll be documenting the experiences of LGBT and women gamers / game developers to introduce perspectives you may not have seen before.
Things have come a long way and these communities are now seeing some breakthroughs. That is one of the reasons why we want this film to be made now. We want to be there through the triumphs in the gaming world so that we can capture these moments and preserve them in time.
Our Kickstarter campaign ensures that our production scales with interest. Millions of fans comprise the gaming industry, but many of them remain unrepresented within the media they love. Our goal, to lend a voice to the the entire gaming community, is dependent upon your donations. The more donations we receive, the bigger the documentary can be. More big names, more wild stories, and bigger, better production!
Gamers on the whole are a smarter, more involved group of people when it comes to their entertainment. Think about it; our entertainment IS interactive! Because of that, we wanted to make sure gamers were able to have a hand in the making of this documentary. By giving to our project you get to have a say in just how far we take this and you get to say that you took part in creating something interesting and new.
Risks and challenges
While we feel the gaming community--all communities--can only stand to benefit from the celebration of diversity, we recognize there will be people against it. Our time meeting with LGBT figures in the game world has exposed us to stories ranging from mild harrassment to macabre horror stemming from heterosexism, misogyny, and the fear of difference. As a result, we recognize the certainty of obstacles ahead. But our story must be told.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Quite the opposite. When it comes to gaming, be they gay, straight, men, women, black, white, etc a player is a player. What we want to do is portray the struggles that people have gone through just to try and be treated the same as everyone else within the gaming sphere.
As of now the game bundle titles are a surprise but we'll be revealing them over the course of the Kickstarter. These are going to be games made by important queer/lgbt developers.
Most games will run on Windows and Mac. We will try to make as many games as we can playable on Linux but porting can be difficult so the titles may be limited. Still, there should be plenty of games accessible to the Linux folks out there!
Yes it does! :)
While its certainly possible to make a small indie film on a much tighter budget, our current goal of $50,000 is actually pretty constricting. After taxes, funding costs and cuts, we'll be spending a lot of our own resources in making the film. Fortunately we have a large group of people eagerly helping us with the donation of time and equipment and so even on a budget the film will definitely be running.\
Aside from production, the money will also go for travel. Sometimes we will need to hit the road to meet with people regarding the subject, and sometimes we may need to fly people to us. It is important that we get plenty of different voices in the film so that we can cover the full spectrum of personalities and experiences.
