The goal of this campaign is to create a set of six 2D 30mm Infernal Humanoid player-character gaming miniature standees representing the Warrior, Rogue and Spellcaster archetypes of fantasy gaming. The set will be comprised of a male and female Warrior, a male and female Rogue and a male and female Spellcaster. Each figure will be a unique design, with front and back views printed on double-thick card stock, die-cut to their silhouettes, and packaged with stands.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: SWORD, STEALTH & SPELLFIRE
Fantasy role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, and the multitude of similar games inspired by it, have established many different character types to choose from. The core rules of the latest version of D&D, for example, give players 12 class options, from the mighty Barbarian to the scholarly Wizard. One could argue, however, that each of those character classes are derived from one of three core fantasy archetypes: the Warrior, the Rogue, and the Spellcaster.
The purpose of tabletop gaming miniatures is to represent player characters and their adversaries on the tabletop to help visualize the action. My first offering of player-character miniatures included 12 character designs – one for each of the latest D&D classes – paired with the most mechanically complimentary race, and each with male and female variants, for a total of 24 figures. These Gender-Variant Player-Character Miniatures satisfy many player-character needs, but cannot cater to all, since between all the classes, races and male/female variants, there are nearly 400 potential combinations.
By designing figures that embody the Warrior, Rogue or Spellcaster, it is my intention that most of the variety of classes can be represented by one of these three core archetypes. I will design these figures, therefore, to hint at different class interpretations so that, for example, the Warrior might equally represent a fighter, a paladin or a cleric – or even a more heavily armoured ranger.
By taking this archetypal design approach, when combined with the most popular races, most class/race combinations can be represented on the tabletop with fewer figure designs overall. This campaign is an attempt to do just that, starting with Infernal Humanoid hybrids, more commonly known as "tieflings" in fantasy RPG lore.
WHY INFERNAL HUMANOIDS?
To help decide which race to begin with, I ran a series of polls on Twitter to help me narrow down the game genre and character race to offer with this campaign. Based on those polls, "medieval-fantasy" "tieflings" won. Thus, the Warrior, Rogue and Spellcaster designs of these figures will incorporate infernal motifs. Future sets, such as elvish Warrior, Rogue and Spellcaster characters, for example, will blend elvish motifs into their designs.
WHAT I NEED AND WHAT YOU GET
Backers of this campaign will receive a set of unique, original-design two-dimensional fantasy tabletop card stock gaming miniatures produced exclusively by me, in my art style, for the TRPG audience. Those opting for the second tier of $20 will receive an additional set of the same miniatures in an alternate colour scheme, available only to backers of this campaign.
ABOUT ME & MY MINIATURES
I'm an artist and graphic designer with a lifelong passion for Dungeons & Dragons and related tabletop role-playing games. I've been creating 2D card stock minis since 2013. What began as a desire to create simple and affordable miniatures to play tabletop war games with my then very young son evolved into an original product line.
My first miniatures were a set of forest-themed human archers and a set of orc adversaries for them to battle. In the years since, under the label Pasiphilo's Paper Minis, I've designed and produced 20 sets of minis for fantasy, modern and cyberpunk-fantasy genres, made commercially available through GamingGeek.ca, Etsy, and in person at games conventions.
This new set of Infernal Humanoid miniatures, with a new design philosophy, is to be the first set of a new series of gender-variant player-character miniatures - Sword, Stealth and Spellfire.
WHY MY CARD STOCK MINIATURES?
My card stock miniatures are for players and game masters who want unique, ready-to-use tabletop RPG miniatures without spending a lot of money on sculpted minis or hours painting them. Similarly, they are for those without the time or patience for downloading, printing out, cutting out and assembling the many PDF paper minis available.
I design all of my commercial sets of miniatures with front and back views and all of my player-character miniatures with male and female variants.
REGARDING THE DEMO FIGURE DESIGN
The sample artwork of the male warrior is just one possible direction and is shown only to give you an idea of the final design aesthetic. It does not necessarily reflect the final design or colour schemes to be used in the finished product.
Risks and challenges
As the sole producer on this project, one challenge I face is to accomplish all the tasks set out for myself, among the other work I do as a freelance professional, within a reasonable time frame. To mitigate this and manage expectations, I have set a 3-month time frame for the first perk, with the second perk to be delivered a month after that. I feel this is doable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
