Return to Norðlond with this detailed Norse-flavored setting for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG.
600 backers pledged $26,030 to help bring this project to life.

About

$26,030

600

In The Citadel at Nordvorn, you will find many adventures, plus more trouble the players will doubtless create on their own. The area is so teeming with strife and peril that their characters will have the opportunity to stand at the center of many crises.

The Citadel at Norðvorn is a setting for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG. It consists of three major settlements, many small villages, at least one ruin, and two primary sources of conflict: The Hunted Lands to the northwest of The Palisade, and the Endalaus Forest, to the north and east of Audreyn's Wall.

Return to Norðlond, a Viking-flavored world with its own history, culture, and expectations. Visit as an outsider, or fresh from a victory rediscovering the Hall of Judgment.

It is intended for starting Dungeon Fantasy RPG characters of 250 points. They will be major players, and the fulcrum around which the future of Norðlond turns. While it is set in the same world as Hall of Judgment, it is not sequel. It is a setting, filled with adventuring possibilities, and easily tuned up or down in power level as the GM desired to suit any fantasy campaign!

Good luck, and may the Fates have a bold destiny in store for you!

If the project funds at the basic level, the book will contain 96 pages of material . . . but the potential exists for many more. What will definitely be there?

Norðvorn

The 25-page section details the key locations in the city, from the Keep itself, to details of Laegribaer, the lower town. The book describes the local geography, key natural resources that are important to trade and commerce, local landmarks, a detailed city map, and of course details on law, guilds, religion, and things to buy and sell. Plus festivals!

The city gets a detailed treatment: one of the goals of the project is to turn my rough map, done in a definitely-not-suitable style, into something breathtaking.

Löngbrú

More than any other settlement in the book, Longbru is the area best set up to be considered “Town,” as per Exploits p. 13. It is a staging point and clearinghouse for adventure and treasure, and has everything required for a good start to killing monsters and taking their stuff.

Áinferill

A town in crisis. The jarl recently lost his eldest son Asbjorn and his wife in a misadventure in the Endalaus forest, killed and presumed eaten by the dragonkin. Why was Asbjorn even there? Well, like any good story, it's all about a girl. Ylsa Elðhar, the flame-headed daughter of Orm Karrisson, the wealthiest man in Norðvorn, and maybe all of Norðlond. Orm's very public rejection of the pair's declaration of affection nearly caused an instant feud, and did start a chain of events that could consume the entire region.

Or perhaps that chain of events started two generations in the past?

Other Villages

The space between the larger settlements is not empty. Every few miles, a traveler finds a small village, home to perhaps a hundred or so families. Perhaps it's a farming village, or a riverside community blessed with productive orchards, or a failing logging town, remote and dying. At least one sample village will be detailed, and more if stretch goals are passed!

Supporting Cast

Major NPCs and minor ones each get some detail. You will meet Egil Skarpuror, the Castellan of Norðvorn and his wife Olrun Skotblad. Learn the secret history of Orm Karisson, huskarl to Egil and father to Ylsa Eldhar. Meet Gunnulf Kaldrvik, Jarl of Ainferill, and watch his rule disintegrate, despite the worthy efforts of his surviving daughter Asleif. From minor Wardens to powerful nobles and influential clerics, The Citadel at Norðvorn has you covered.

Factions and Encounter Seeds

Even beyond the backdrop, The Citadel at Norðvorn details the goals and motivations, methods and tactics for NPCs: each can want something, and the GM will know what they're willing to do to get it.

  • The Eðlafolk and their gangaeðla minions are swarming in the forest, threatening loggers and the Wall itself. Why?
  • Faerie raids into the Hunted Lands, and even beyond, are occurring with terrifyingly regular, and increasing, frequency. What happened? Why now? Can anything be done?
  • Gunnulf is misbehaving more and more each day. Always hot-tempered he flaunts his new mistress and hardly seems to grieve for his fallen wife and son . . . and each day steps closer to a feud the land cannot afford.

From big to small, grand plots and random encounters in the forest, the book gives strings on which the players pull . . . and provides a detailed relationship map so that the GM will know who reacts to each string, and why.

Bestiary

The book wouldn't be complete without monsters! Where Hall of Judgment was heavy on faerie, this book will contain more dragonkin, and the dangerous fauna of the Endalaus Forest. The Dragongrounds north of Audreyn's Wall are riddled with underground and above ground ruins, old haunts of broken ley-line crossings, and other supernatural occurrences.

And treasure. Magic and mundane . . . so much wealth lies in the wreckage of the fallen Dragon Empire. Fell beasts guard it.

You know what to do.

If everything were completely done, we wouldn't need Kickstarter. Some layout and graphic design is already complete.

Where will the money for the Kickstarter go?

Art and Maps

The lion's share of the funding will go to maps, the cover of the book, and original images that illustrate key locations, events, and characters in the book.

Writing and Editing

Writers need to be paid. More importantly: editors need to be paid, and a book of this length and complexity needs a capable, strong hand. Once the manuscript is finished, it will go to an editor with a good eye for both narrative and grammar.

Printing

The Citadel at Norðvorn will be printed as well as delivered in PDF. Short-run digital printing takes us threough the first stage. Two printers, one in the UK or EU, and one in the USA, will take on the printing of the book.

Why two printers? Because shipping from the USA is utterly ridiculous, and the best way I can find to get books to customers who are outside the USA - and for Hall of Judgment, that was a full third of the physical books! - is to print the books in the UK/Europe and then ship them via Royal Mail.

The US is easy: I'll print 'em here and ship them via USPS Media Mail.

PILLAGED!!! The First Goal: $13,000

The initial goal of the book will be 96 pages. There's already more than that written, but the core - the main settlements, the NPCs, the key faction interactions, plus critters, are going to be part of that 96 pages.

So, how does the project get even better?

PILLAGED!!! Expand to 112 pages : $16,000

More art, more encounters, more content.

Moving beyond the basic funding level . . . including "non-shipping" funds raised in the post-KS campaign phase in Backerkit . . . will enable me to expand the book by another 16 pages.

Each sample village is 2-3 pages. A monster is a page. Sample encounters run about 10 per page without details.

PILLAGED!!! Expand to 128 pages: $20,000

Another content expansion, this time focusing on making the Bestiary and some more detailed encounters with maps and monsters: at least one mini-dungeon.

Offset Print Run: $25,000

The book is as thick as Hall of Judgment, and making it to $25,000 enables a full-scale offset print run! Glorious paper, and a lay-flat, sewn binding for durability and ease of reading.

Expand to 144 pages: $30,000

The final stretch goal pushes the book to it's maximum value: 144 pages. Another micro-location, and ensuring all monsters referenced in the book are included fully in the Bestiary for easy reference.

NEW GOAL: Hall of Judgment 2nd Edition: $35,000

I'm actually starting to run out of Hall of Judgment and my That Other Game book Dungeon Grappling. If we hit this goal, I'll reprint Hall of Judgment in the same offset print quality - sewn lay-flat binding, heavy paper, and all the new maps by Glynn Seal.

While the retail price of the new edition will jump to $30, for this Kickstarter, the print price will remain $25 for you guys. If we hit it, it'll take 3 months to print, but the new editions will be printed and shipped at the same time as Citadel.

If the DFM2 Kickstarter shoots through $45,000, Steve Jackson Games has agreed to include a copy of the 8-page Fantastic Dungeon Grappling booklet in the boxed set itself.

All of Gaming Ballistic's Dungeon Fantasy RPG products are 8x10" size . . . just like the box. And if that stretch goal is reached, we get to put that into practice.

To unlock this new stretch goal and improve the box set contents, please visit and support The Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2 Kickstarter today! And for those of you who already own the box, don't worry!. . . Fantastic Dungeon Grappling will be available separately as an add-on.

Add-ons are extras that can be placed in your backpack of holding during the campaign. To add these items to your rewards, simply include the listed cost as part of your pledge.

The added funds appear as a credit  during the Backerkit phase . . . pledging them early helps the project fund! Choose your items, pay for shipping, answer short questions, and get on with receiving your stuff.

Note that many of the products below are not for the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game, but rather for Dragon Heresy, Fifth Edition, or Swords and Wizardry.

More Citadel!

If you wish to order more copies of The Citadel at Nordvorn - to supply your gaming group, or for any reason, just add an additional $28 each to your pledge, and we'll get you as many as you'd like!

  • The Citadel at Nordvorn (PDF): $14
  • The Citadel at Nordvorn (Print-only): $28
  • The Citadel at Nordvorn (Print+PDF): $35

New Add-on: Fantastic Dungeon Grappling Bookmarks

Whether you're using the Fantastic Dungeon Grappling short set of rules from Hall of Judgment, or the forthcoming Fantastic Dungeon Grappling book that will expand on them, keep track of your grappling with these handy bookmarks.

Available all over the world, you will be able to order them in Backerkit. For players, it's a great way to keep track of how badly you're being restrained. For GMs, you can get several and use them to track monsters.

They will be printed on 16-point/350gsm glossy paper stock, and laminated so that you can use them with dry-erase markers . . . frequently.

  •  $3: One bookmark
  •  $10: 5 bookmarks
  •  $15: 10 bookmarks
  •  $35: 25 bookmarks

Fantastic Dungeon Grappling

Fantastic Dungeon Grappling takes the "attack roll, defense roll, damage roll" basic play of Powered by GURPS and makes it work for grappling as well. A new simplified tracking mechanism - tested over years of play - keeps this fast and light at the table.

And After the Grapple, easily and quickly perform feats such as Takedowns, Disarms, and inflicting pain or injury on your target.

Oh . . . and of course there are a few new magic spells that grapple, plus a short section on the best part about grappling: having your monsters grab and eat the players!

  • Fantastic Dungeon Grappling (PDF): $4
  • Fantastic Dungeon Grappling (Print-only): $7
  • Fantastic Dungeon Grappling (Print+PDF): $9

 Hall of Judgment

If you missed the last campaign, it's not too late.

Hall of Judgment is an adventure micro-setting for four to six 250-point characters, made under license to Gaming Ballistic, LLC for use with the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game(which is required and referenced in the book).

  • Hall of Judgment (PDF): $12.50
  • Hall of Judgment (Print-only): $25
  • Hall of Judgment (Print+PDF): $30

 GB Ultimate Add-On

Add $145 to your pledge to get all of Gaming Ballistic's other products in one batch. Hall of Judgment, Dragon Heresy, Dungeon Grappling, and Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition) as a bundled set.

This is easy in the USA; it will be a bit trickier for international folks, but I think I can get it done.

This level includes both PDF and Print copies of all books.

  • GB Ultimate Add-On: $145

Note that Dragon Heresy, Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition), and Dungeon Grappling are OGL products based on the 5th Edition of the market-leading RPG; Dungeon Grappling and Lost Hall both have support for Swords & Wizardry as well.

Dungeon Grappling (5e; PFRPG; Swords and Wizardry)

Dungeon Grappling is a product for Fifth Edition, the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, and Swords and Wizardry . . . NOT the Dungeon Fantasy RPG.

If you want to see just how fun and simple grappling should be in That Other Game, you're definitely going to want to seize this book.

  • Dungeon Grappling PDF - $7.50 Add-on item
  •  Dungeon Grappling Print + PDF - $20

Lost Hall of Tyr 2nd Edition (5e; Swords and Wizardry)

The first fully-native support for the Dragon Heresy RPG, this edition of Lost Hall pulls all of the great stuff that was added into Hall of Judgment into what was originally a linear one-shot adventure suitable for convention play.

Journey through the lands of Torengar to seek and find the Lost Hall of Tyr. Find the waybridge that will transport you instantly to your destination, or journey overland for weeks through treacherous terrain.

When you get there, will you be able to prove your worth and enter the Lost Hall of Tyr . . . or will a conniving High Lady of the Fae thwart your intentions?

The digital version is a 112-page PDF, hyperlinked, bookmarked, and in full color.

The Print and PDF bundle is for those that want a tangible copy of the original. Printed perfect-bound on 100# matte white paper, copies in the USA will ship from Gaming Ballistic, while overseas will fulfill through CPI (and are slightly thinner).

  • Lost Hall of Tyr (PDF) - $13
  • Lost Hall of Tyr (Print Only) - $26
  •  Lost Hall of Tyr (Print + PDF) - $33

The Dragon Heresy Introductory Set

The Norse-inspired world of Etera gets a full treatment in this self-contained RPG. All you need to play through Level 1-5, including setting, rules, character creation, and a bestiary featuring over 100 Norse-inspired critters.

This 285-page RPG is a stand-alone game based on Fifth Edition, but modified to be significantly more interesting. Wounds are differentiated from vigor, armor has Damage Reduction (DR) rather than making you harder to hit, and shields are just way, way cooler.

Based on real-world combat research, inspired by Norse mythology, and with speed and fun of play foremost in mind, this is Gaming Ballistic's flagship product to date.

The PDF is 287 pages, indexed, hyperlinked, and cross-referenced. The background, art, and borders can be turned off as layers for toner-saving ease of printing and accessibility for those with vision contrast challenges.

The print version got an offset print run, and the book is nearly an inch thick, on 85# matte-paper, with a smyth-sewn binding. This is a beautiful book, and showcases how much more you can do in the Nordlond (called Torengar in the book).

  • Dragon Heresy Introductory Set (PDF) - $20
  • Dragon Heresy Introductory Set (Print Only) - $50
  • Dragon Heresy Introductory Set (Print + PDF) - $60

The Battle Shield of Torengar ($500)

Just for fun, I will hand-build for you a mostly-authentic viking-style center-gripped shield. Made of quarter-sawn poplar wood, with a hand-carved oak handle, mild steel boss, and faced, backed, and edged with goat rawhide, it's put together with hide glue, and tapered at the edges. Who doesn't want their own Viking-style shield, made to historical dimensions? Make an impression at your next staff meeting.

If you pledge at this level (or buy one as an add-on), I'll contact you and we can work out the details of size and how you want it painted. The shield will likely weigh about 4.5-7 lbs, depending on our mutually-agreed-upon specs.

This is only available in the USA, because even inside the USA, this is horrifically expensive to ship!

The shield and all of Gaming Ballistic's books and PDFs are included in the "Shield-guard of Norðvorn" pledge level.

Some prior samples below. The first two are my personal training shields. Each weighs 6 lbs. The next two were shields for backers of the Dragon Heresy project at the highest level.

To help manage post-campaign add-ons, as well as the distribution of the final product(s) to backers, Gaming Ballistic will be using Backerkit to conduct the post-Kickstarter surveys and fulfillment.

Backerkit is a company whose purpose is to help creators manage these details, including add-ons and shipping costs. When the campaign ends, you will be invited to fill out a Backerkit survey to confirm shipping details, and choose any add-ons you might like to purchase. If you've pledged more than your reward total, this will show as a credit on your account.

The Backerkit phase will only last between 10-14 days. The survey will probably only have two or three questions in it: shipping address, and reward selection. It is important to get the shipping address question answered promptly if you order physical product.

"Ships to Whole World" is not Free Shipping!

An important point: the project will ship to the entire world.

Shipping in the USA of physical product will use the USPS media mail, and shipping will be added to your pledge total during the Backerkit phase.

International shipping will use a separate print run done in the United Kingdom or in the EU in order to control shipping costs unless we hit an offset print run. Every effort will be made to make the US and International print runs of identical, outstanding quality . . . but two print runs is the only way to control shipping.

Either way, I don't control shipping costs, and there's no way around it: International shipping is very expensive, and time-consuming to boot. If you have purchased multiple physical products, such as a physical copy of Dragon Heresy or Dungeon Grappling plus your physical copy of Citadel at Nordvorn, Gaming Ballistic will do everything possible to group them into a single shipment to reduce costs, but that might not be possible. Certain countries (such as Brazil) are ridiculously expensive to ship to, and those costs will need to be passed on during the Backerkit phase.

Risks and challenges

The primary risk to backers is the timing of delivery.

The basic mini-setting is complete. The layout template is in place and I have already started work on graphic design and getting the right feel for the work.

Unlike Hall of Judgment, which benefited from effectively being a conversion of an already-complete book, this one will be all new. New art. New setting. New maps. Some re-used monsters, some new ones. That means that it's possible one or more of those things could be delayed.

The finishing touches on writing will happen during the campaign, and we'll need to see how well we do right off the bat before I start buying art. If things go very well - better than Hall of Judgment - we might see an offset print run, but things would have to go very well. If they DO go that well, it extends the time of receipt by 8-10 weeks over short-run digital print.

All add-ons are already in hand, and if there are shields ordered, we'll work together to get those done. I don't rush those.

There are very few things that would disrupt the project other than mild schedule slips – though of course things can always go pear-shaped. Gaming Ballistic will provide regular updates as to the project’s progress, and do everything possible to deliver the final PDF on or ahead of schedule. Since the final touches on the manuscript are still being made, "on schedule" is much more likely than "ahead of schedule" for this effort.

One last risk: International shipping is unpredictable and expensive. The add-ons in particular may come from many different locations in order to save on shipping cost, and may still add up to a good deal of money. Gaming Ballistic will work with you to do the best we can, but it may still be spendy.

In order to mitigate shipping expense, unless we have an offset print run (1,000 copies or more), I will print the US copies here, but the International copies using a different printer. This allows me to use Royal Mail for international shipments. I will endeavor to make the books as close to the same level of awesome as I can, but I'd rather use slightly lower weight paper for International orders than stick folks with a $50-70 shipping charge for a $30 book.
