Thanks to their patience, persistence, and an amazingly successful Kickstarter, Steve Jackson Games re-acquired the rights to The Fantasy Trip . . . and produced The Fantasy Trip: Legacy Edition. It arrived with a resounding thunk in a Cidri-scale box.

Then came the TFT Adventures. Ready-to-play support for The Fantasy Trip with maps, counters, and megahexes.

Now, in partnership with Steve Jackson Games, Gaming Ballistic is bringing you (at least!) four new adventures for The Fantasy Trip. 

What’s Being Created

The campaign will fund publication of four new 16-page adventures, each of which is already written. The funds pay for editing, layout, art, maps, and a high-quality print run.

Each softcover adventure will sport a unique color cover, and contain black and white interiors on high-quality (130gsm matte-coated) paper. Sixteen pages means the binding will be saddle-stitched (stapled).

The Team

The writing team have all written for The Fantasy Trip before . . . among a great number of other projects. 

David Pulver is the author of the TFT adventure Fire in the Temple, the "Ships and Boats" article for Hexagram, as well as such varied works as Transhuman Space, GURPS 4th edition, and Big Eyes, Small Mouth. He has written over 100 articles for Pyramid Magazine including adventures for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy and The Fantasy Trip. David is a veteran TFT player and GM dating back to 1978 when he first played Melee.

The writing team of Christopher R. Rice and J. Edward Tremlett co-wrote The Crown of Eternity and the Cursed Pirate Isle. Christopher has the distinction of being the most-frequently published freelancer in Pyramid Vol 3, as well as being the author of GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 19: Incantation Magic and Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game: Traps. J. Edward Tremlett wrote The Groom of the Spider Princess, The Tome of the Black Island, and Where the Snow Bleeds, and co-wrote Al-Phasmaq: The City of Ships with Christopher R. Rice.

Gaming Ballistic, LLC is publishing these four TFT adventures, with six more left to go already under contract. Gaming Ballistic is proud to be a license holder for both The Fantasy Trip and The Dungeon Fantasy RPG, and seeks to provide a steady stream of high-quality material to the fans of both games. GB has also published for That Other Game, and you can find those products under add-ons.

Printing

On May 23 - the day the Kickstarter funded - I received an amazing quotation from my printer in Latvia. I also suspect that there was a math error in my original spreadsheet that vastly under-costed the price of POD (you can look it up: $1.97 for an 18-page book, the minimum, on DriveThruRPG). 

In any case, with the new quote in hand for an offset print run, it turns out the break-even point for number of backers to make offset the economical option is . . . 237.

As of the time of the Kickstarter crossing the $16,000 mark, we had orders of 257 physical copies. We're just passing 427 at the time of the big update, which means offset is the way to go. No longer a stretch goal, it's "just the way it is."

The book will be printed with a color cover (255gsm, or about 12-point stock), on 130gsm matte-coated interiors (about 85# paper, a bit heavier than what Lulu uses, and 14% heavier than DriveThru's "Premium Color" paper).

Cidri is a big (really, really, really big) world, with room for all sorts of different things. Even so, these new adventures all have something in common: You first have to survive the trip.

Ironskull Castle (Pulver). Visit Ironskull Castle, the headquarters of Lady Raelle Ironskull, mercenary warlord turned magical arms dealer, mistress of Eldritch Arms. Potential adventure seeds:

  • Intervene in factional negotiations for weapons and magical devices
  • Mission-Impossible-style invasion and theft of exotic magic items
  • Is Lady Ironskull really planning to march forth with an undead army at her back? Stop her (or join her!) 

An entire castle filled with nasty surprises, strange magic items, and detailed NPCs. Trouble never stops coming out of Ironskull Castle, and Lady Raelle can also be used as a long-term “Evil Overlord” that can spawn multiple follow-ups. By the way: She’s read the Evil Overlord manual.

The last page of the adventure contains 42 print-them-yourself tokens for monsters and NPCs that appear in the adventure, printed in greyscale. They are the same art as the token sheets, but in black-and-white.

Crown of Eternity (Rice/Tremlett). The party is tasked with finding a lost researcher for an exclusive league of magical explorers. The lost eldritch archaeologist was in search of the fabled Crown of Eternity. This is a quest adventure, with the following goals:

  • Bring back the explorer . . . dead, alive, maybe a bit of both
  • Cross a vast ocean, a treacherous desert, and a poisoned sea, beset from ahead and behind by competing factions and dire threats
  • The party must succeed where a rival daredevil failed: find the Crown of Eternity, snatching it from his grasp if necessary

This is a patronage quest, and introduces the Indhyna League, a mysterious and well-funded group of treasure-seeking mages and scholars. They very much have their own agenda.

Citadel of Ice (Pulver). The dungeon is a frozen labyrinth inside an iceberg that broke loose from the coast and is drifting in the ocean. The adventure features:

  • A collection of ice-themed monsters
  • A secret power lying hidden beneath the ice
  • Competing factions striving for control of the iceberg 

The team of adventurers must journey to the floating tomb before it melts, taking the treasure with it . . .

Curse of the Pirate King (Rice/Tremlett). The expedition seems simple: travel to the former capitol of a vast pirate nation, and find the fabled Blade of Dawn. This “straight-forward” mission is complicated by several factors:

  • A long-ago betrayal brought a centuries-long curse upon the realm of the Pirate King and his island fortress. 
  • The island is far from uninhabited . . . though few walking its lands are properly described as living
  • The players must discover how death has found a way to bring strange “life” to the isle of the pirate king

All the party has to do is go to the lifeless rock, and loot the treasure of a thousand dead buccaneers. What could go wrong? This quest follows the events of Crown of Eternity . . . with that powerful organization now working against the players.

The campaign started with four simple pledge levels, but has expanded to provide two new options collecting all of the possible rewards into the equivalent of "I want it all!" levels.

Digital Voyager ($20)

This pledge level is for all FIVE! new adventures in PDF format only - including a PDF of the new 32-page solitaire adventure added as the $21,000 stretch goal!. The adventures will of course be layered and hyperlinked. Anything else is just rude, don't cha know?  Interiors are black-and-white; the cover is color. Print Quartermaster ($50)

If you want physical goods, this is your pledge. It includes all FIVE adventures in both Print and PDF formats - including the new 32-page solitaire adventure added as the $21,000 stretch goal! Master and Commander ($100)

This sponsorship-level tier helps the overall campaign succeed! In addition to print and PDF copies of all FIVE adventures - including the new 32-page solitaire adventure added as the $21,000 stretch goal! The Master and Commander level gets preview access to early stage drafts for playtesting and proofing, and receives credit for such in the book. Interiors are black-and-white; the cover is color.Color token sheets and card decks are not included in this pledge level; those are add-ons.

Merchant Prince ($100)

Put more support for the gorgeous TFT Legacy Edition on your store shelves with this retail level. Receive five copies each of all FIVE print adventures - including the new 32-page solitaire adventure added as the $21,000 stretch goal!. Interiors are black-and-white; the cover is color. PDFs are not included at this pledge tier. Color token sheets and card decks are not included in this pledge level; those are add-ons.

All the Digital Things! ($50)

This pledge level includes a PDF of all the rewards offered in the campaign in digital format.

Bring Me The Things. All of Them. ($110)

This is the place for those that must loot and pillage.  This pledge level includes a PDF of all the rewards offered in the campaign in physical AND digital format.

  • Print and PDF copies of all FIVE Perilous Journeys - including the new 32-page solitaire adventure added as the $21,000 stretch goal!
  • Printed die-cut token sheets, in color, of all the tokens that come with each adventure. These are printed on 1.6mm gloss-laminated stock . . . but see the stretch goals!
  • Color PDFs of the token sheets that come with the adventure. This is to support those with print-it-yourself aspirations who have quality color inkjet or laser printers and for folks who want more of a particular token.
  • UV-gloss laminated NPC and Monster cards. A minimum of 42 cards will be provided, but see the stretch goals: if we get enough orders, I'll include more cards in the deck. Maybe a lot more.
  • Color PDFs of the NPC/Monster cards, with a hyperlinked table of contents for quick reference

The campaign runs from May 8 through June 8, and ends at 10pm Central Time. Editing and layout are already underway. When the campaign funds, the graphics side – maps and artwork – will commence. The overall schedule is (updated May 30):

  • May 8 through June 8: Kickstarter Campaign underway
  • June 8 through June 24: Kickstarter funds settle
  • June 26 through July 7: Backerkit phase for shipping
  • End July through mid-August: prelim PDFs to backers for error-checking 
  • mid-August: Files sent to printer; final PDFs distributed
  • End-October 2019: Print copies delivered to backers

Gaming Ballistic will do everything possible to meet or beat this schedule. Hitting the $21,000 stretch goal for the fifth Perilous Journey is not currently expected to push back the timeline of the physical delivery in October!

The most difficult part of any Kickstarter seems to be international shipping. After the campaign is over, Gaming Ballistic uses Backerkit to collect shipping fees once the full extent of the required print runs are known. This way, we have the maximum time and required information to get the lowest cost and most timely delivery.

Books

Gaming Ballistic tries to keep international shipping costs down by printing the books in Latvia and then shipping first to the UK, where Royal Mail is used for international fulfillment. From there, the bulk of the material comes back to the USA for distribution via USPS Media Mail. It may be possible with a sufficient volume of orders to split the print run into a USA-domestic print-and-ship, and a separate, smaller print run for international only. In any case, every effort goes to delivering a high-quality product for minimal delivery cost.

Gaming Ballistic has no control over shipping rates, tariffs, customs, trade wars and rumors of war: I cant promise shipping will be inexpensive. What I can promise is to be fully transparent about the process! 

Tokens and Card Decks

The companies that prints the tokens and card decks ship directly to the UK!  

Depending on the quantity, that movement will only add a dollar or so to the shipping bill per sheet. Because these token sheets and card decks qualify as games, not books, they're likely subject to a 20% VAT rate. 

Overall, getting them from the printer to backers for about 301-400g worth of token sheets (a conservative estimate) looks to run about:

  • UK: $7-8
  • EU: $9-10
  • Everywhere Else: $10-11

So for a $40-50 order of tokens, you'd be looking at $8-10 in VAT and another $7-11 in shipping. I think. International taxes, customs, and shipping can be unpredictable.

Where possible, orders would be grouped.

As with any project, if we exceed the basic funding goal, certain things get better. Some are revealed now, but others will be revealed as we hit the future targets!

Lucre for the Authors

Backer Goal: 250+ backers. If we surpass 250 backers, the authors get paid more! As the project scores more and more backers, the author's pay goes up. The better the Kickstarter, the more they are compensated. If we hit 1,000 backers or more, you've quadrupled their pay.

Here are three new stretch goals that expand the Decks of Destiny project as the Four Perilous Journeys campaign attracts support.

  •  UNLOCKED!!  Four Perilous Journeys - $16,000 - Rumors & Treasures - Four rumor cards added to the Rumors & Treasures subassembly, each based on one of the Four Perilous Journeys adventures.
  • UNLOCKED!! Four Perilous Journeys - $20,000 - Adversaries - Four character cards added to the Adversaries subassembly, each based on one of the Four Perilous Journeysadventures.
  • UNLOCKED!! Four Perilous Journeys - $25,000 - Rumors & Treasures - Four more rumor cards added to the Rumors & Treasures subassembly, each based on one of the Four Perilous Journeys adventures.

These new cards have all been unlocked!

They provide you with hooks to the four adventures that may either be used to guide the player characters into one of the adventures or, if you wish, as the springboard to an adventure of your own design. 

WE PASSED $21,000 . . . so the campaign is now FIVE Perilous Journeys. After listening to feedback on what the backers want, I talked with David Pulver, and we came up with some thing for you. The Vampire Hunter Belladonna 32-page solo adventure will be included in both the $20 PDF and $50 Print+PDF adventure groups. ANY pledge tier that includes the original four 16-page adventures will include this fifth perilous journey at no additional cost.

Vampire Hunter Belladonna

You are Belladonna, the young maid and cook at Castle Ironskull—moonlighting as a vampire slayer!

Years ago, the sinister Lord Adrik Blackbird turned your best friend into a vampire. For their own good, you had to stake them both! Somehow, you succeeded—but while those vampires perished, they had already infected others. The bloodsuckers will spread like a plague through the local countryside—unless you hunt them down!

Play as the lethal maid Belladonna (wielder of silver stakes and deadly poisons), or as your own vampire slaying hero or wizard. Travel through the villages and wilderness near Ironskull Castle, hunting vampires (and possibly other monsters). During your quest, you may uncover disturbing rumors of the rise of a new and terrifying master vampire, and the arcane relic they seek. Can you find it first?

Vampire Hunter Belladonna is a programmed adventure for The Fantasy Trip. You won't need a Game Master—instead a system of branching paragraphs directs you from encounter to encounter as you make your own choice. You resolve combat or other encounters using the TFT rules.

In this double-sized 32-page adventure, you will find: 

  • Over 200 paragraphs detailing wilderness and village encounters.
  • Multiple new monsters (not just vampires!) and magic items.
  • A "sandbox" wilderness setting that can reward multiple plays.
  • A choice of using the included pre-generated characters or your existing PC.

VAMPIRE HUNTER BELLADONNA is an independent adventure, but it has ties to IRONSKULL CASTLE, so you can use both together in a campaign if you wish. If you think of it as "Vampire Hunter B," we won't mind that either.

Along with the adventure, a fifth token sheet will be made available and included in the "All the Things" level pledges for no additional cost, and will be made available as a physical add-on as well.

Monster cards make quick and easy work of tracking the bad guys. The NPC/Creature add-on provides a basic set of 42 such cards, chosen from the adventures released.

If the campaign supporters order 250 or more decks by the time the Backerkit phase closes, I'll up the card count to 63; at 500 or more, it will be 84 cards!

At that level, some of those cards will be duplicates so that you can lay down a squad of creatures (six skeleton halberdiers, for example). The token art will be features on the cards.

This is the first product for The Fantasy Trip by Gaming Ballistic: I’m very excited about that! As such, there are limited add-ons I can offer within that product line. During the Backerkit phase, you will be able to order other Gaming Ballistic products as well.

If you wish to add credit for add-ons, increase your pledge by the amount of the add-ons you wish to purchase. You will see a credit for that amount, over and above your basic pledge level, in the Backerkit survey. Much like any digital shopping cart experience, you’ll allocate add-ons to your cart, and then pay any balance plus shipping fees based on item weight and destination.

Token Sheets

Each adventure has creatures and NPCs to fight, negotiate with, or charm. While print-your-own tokens are on the last page in each adventure, this add-on gets you a COLOR version of that page. Each sheet contains 42 1" square tokens depicting the creatures and characters from the adventure. There is a separate sheet for each adventure; if you want a physical sheet for each adventure, you'll want to increase your pledge by $10 per sheet.

  • Color PDF: $5 each

  • A PDF of all  five sheets will be made available as an add-on for $25
  • An "all the sheets" bundle for Print+PDF will be made available for $60

NPC/Creature Deck

For quick reference and easy play at the table, nothing beats the utility of a printed NPC or monster card.

The basic add-on will be 42 cards in the "Creature and Wizard" size: 3.5 x 5". These will be printed on quality UV-gloss coated stock for maximum compatibility with dry-erase markers. 

There is not a unique card deck per adventure: there's a single deck that draws from the selection of creatures that come with the adventures, including the solo adventure if we hit the $21,000 stretch goal.

The "deck" will also be available in PDF format.

Gaming Ballistic is pleased to present two complete adventures set in a Norse-inspired fantasy world for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG. 

With most of the hajarl's warriors and freeholders out trying to restore order to Norðlond, a priest of the God of Law calls for stalwart thegns to venture into the Frostharrow, rediscover the Lost Hall of Judgment, and return balance to the land. They must journey into the wilds, guided only by their wits, old legends, and a warning: "Strength and sacrifice from those who seek the Domstollinn."

The Citadel at Norðvorn is a setting for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG. It consists of three major settlements, many small villages, a ruin, and two primary adventuring zones: The Hunted Lands to the northwest of The Palisade, and the Endalaus Forest, to the north and east of Audreyn's Wall.

It is intended for starting Dungeon Fantasy RPG characters of 250 points.

This 8-page booklet includes expanded rules for grappling in a way that is fun, fast, flexible, and simple. Increase the nuance and excitement of grappling in the Dungeon Fantasy. Even if your PCs won’t want to use them . . . your monsters will! How else are they going to grab the characters and shove them whole into a toothy maw?

The “Nordlond” setting is known as Torengar when played in a different system. If you like armor subtracting from damage, one-roll hit resolution, want HP ablation to not be a slog-fest way of combat resolution, consider The Dragon Heresy RPG.

The Introductory Set includes Level 1-5 play for a modified version of the Fifth Edition rules under the OGL. Contains more world information on the setting of Nordlond, and is a complete playable game in one gorgeously-printed 288-page hardcover book. Contains character generation, rules, setting, and over 100 monsters waiting to mess with the PCs.

This adventure for the Dragon Heresy RPG is the same basic content as Hall of Judgment, but in a Dragon Heresy native rule base.

The book that started Gaming Ballistic out: This expansion of grappling rules for 5e, the PFRPG, and Swords & Wizardry finally provides those games with grappling rules that don’t suck. Fun to play, easy to learn, and smoothly integrated into the existing system.

To help manage post-campaign add-ons, as well as the distribution of the final product(s) to backers, Gaming Ballistic will be using Backerkit to conduct the post-Kickstarter surveys and fulfillment. 

Backerkit is a company whose purpose is to help creators manage these details, including add-ons and shipping costs. When the campaign ends, you will be invited to fill out a Backerkit survey to confirm shipping details, and choose any add-ons you might like to purchase. If you've pledged more than your reward total, this will show as a credit on your account.

The Backerkit phase will only last between 7-10 days. The survey have two or three questions in it: shipping address, and reward selection. It is important to get the shipping address question answered promptly if you order physical product.

 "Ships to Whole World" is not Free Shipping! 

An important point: the project will ship to the entire world. 

Shipping in the USA of physical product will use the USPS media mail, and shipping will be added to your pledge total during the Backerkit phase.

International shipping will try and keep costs down by printing in the EU (Latvia, specifically) and drop-shipping the books to Kixto, in the UK. International orders will thus ship from there via Royal Mail. The rest of the books will be sent to Studio 2 in Tennessee, and US fulfillment will take place from there.

Either way, I don't control shipping costs, and there's no way around it: International shipping is very expensive, and time-consuming to boot. If you have purchased multiple physical products, Gaming Ballistic will do everything possible to group them into a single shipment to reduce costs, but that might not be possible. Certain countries (such as Brazil) are ridiculously expensive to ship to, and those costs will be passed on during the Backerkit phase.

Risks and challenges

The primary risk to backers is the timing of delivery.

The writing is complete. The layout template is in place and I have already started work on graphic design and getting the right feel for the four books. Editing will commence as soon as the project funds.

These adventures are all new. New art. New monsters. New maps. That means that it's possible one or more of those things could be delayed.

The finishing touches on editing and writing will happen during the campaign. If we hit the stretch goal for an offset print run, it extends the time of receipt by 8-10 weeks over print-on-demand.

There are very few things that would disrupt the project other than mild schedule slips – though of course things can always go pear-shaped. Gaming Ballistic provides regular updates as to the project’s progress, and do everything possible to deliver the final PDF on or ahead of schedule.

One last risk: International shipping is unpredictable and expensive. The add-ons in particular may come from many different locations in order to save on shipping cost, and may still add up to a good deal of money. Gaming Ballistic will work with you to do the best we can, but it may still be spendy.

In order to mitigate shipping expense, I may print US and International copies with two different printers. This allows me to use Royal Mail for international shipments. I will endeavor to make the books as close to the same level of awesome as I can, but I'd rather use slightly lower weight paper for International orders than stick folks with a $50-70 shipping charge for a $30 book.
