Ancient Aliens - Creators of Civilization
Use your alien race & technology to improve your humans to civilized stage. For 2-4 players, ages 12+. Playing time 60-90 minutes.
Ancient Aliens - Creators of Civilization is a card driven engine building civilization game for 2 - 4 players, ages 12 and up. Playing time is 60 - 90 minutes, depending on number of players.
Players take the role of one of four ancient Alien factions; Annunaki, Grey, Nephilim & Saurians. Each faction is given a Continental area where they use their special abilities and technology to control and manipulate the humans living there.
The aliens use their race abilities (telepathic, gene transplants, herbal mixtures & nano probes) to change and develop the humans to improve their existence. The faction's aim is to improve 3 vital human abilities; Knowledge, Skill & Loyalty to civilized stage.
During the game, players use their 3 level based card decks to choose their actions. First they start with Tech deck 1. Having improved any ability (Knowledge, Skill or Loyalty) to level 2 on the improvement table, Tech deck 2 becomes available. Improve to level 3 to gain access to Tech deck 3.
There are up to 5 actions players do each turn. Each action is selected from 3 available actions on each card;
Actions influencing only your own faction is placed down in front of you but actions affecting other players are placed on the uplifted central platform, with the text facing the affected player.
A random starting player is chosen and that player finishes all of his actions. Then the player to his left goes next. When a faction has improved its last ability to civilized stage, it immediately triggers the game end, awarding the accomplishment. Then points are counted and a victor is claimed.
Points are gained from end trigger (only 1 player), crystals owned, buildings built, items & monuments created, aid towards other players and faction agenda accomplished.
"Interesting story line and card drafting mechanism. Quite unique! No down time and it feels like I am involved in the X- files with Mulder and Scully!" Nils Herzmann - Cyrils Brettspiele
"Art design is amazing and you feel that you are really playing an Ancient Aliens culture that is trying to improve these little continents. Unique how the cards are different and how you have to decide when it is the right time to play the right card. Very interesting and unique!"
"Played a prototype version. Very good so far! A very fast-playing and greatly rewarding sci-fi civilization game!" Henrik Larsson
"Great theme and fast playing mechanism. Interesting how many options you have to play the game!" Sölvi Sturluson, playtester
Here below are video reviews based on an early prototype. The game has improved and developed since then.
Game designer, Svavar Björgvinsson, has always been interested in history. He has always been extremely curious and is always seeking knowledge about various things.
He heard first of the Ancient Aliens theories through Erik von Dänikens theories many years ago. Out of keen interest, he was also looking into some ancient civilizations around the globe. Something did not seem to add up according to known explanations from scholars. As being a novice, it would be arrogant to question their learnings. It still would be interesting to play with the question, what if? What if earth's history is much older than claimed? What if civilizations got aid from intellectual beings from other galaxies? What if somebody would look into all of this and combine it into a board game?
So on March 20th 2015, he woke up in the morning full of ideas for a game. The core elements of the game where born that morning in a brain storming writing session. The date is known because that morning, around 11 O'clock there was a Solar eclipse in the middle of the writing.
The 1st version did not work as planned. There where some issues with the circular board and the cards. Some changes needed to be done.
The 2nd test version was introduced in Essen 2015 to test. The turn board was gone, instead there where pins placed on the Improvement table. The general look was intriguing for quite many that played it. The cards had been improved as well as many game functions. We collected a huge amount of feedback to work with.
The 3rd version was more streamlined and improved. There was still some issues with all the text, both on cards and the board. It slowed down the play.
This is the version we introduced in the Kickstarter launch in July. Prior and during the campaign, the game was play tested with many groups in US, Italy, Sweden and Iceland. All groups thought the game was appealing, but all groups had similar issues. Some elements of the game felt a little fiddly and some card icons felt confusing, generating a halt in the play session while reading through the manual to figure out the function. So we improved and simplified all card tokens.
We also decided to remove all building tokens and have them imprinted on the board to simplify game play. Some minor issues with the crystals where also improved. The faction cheat sheets will also speed up the play.
The version we are now presenting to you has been through some severe play testing and development from the initial idea. We sure hope that we will be able to unlock all the stretch goals so we can present the whole complete game to you, as the designer sees it. The basic version, only with tokens works perfectly though. Adding and upgrading some components just increases the experience.
Playing Ancient Aliens as it is now is for us a fantastic journey that we hope you will participate in, so others can enjoy it as well!
We have been looking closely at all development of the game in order to keep the shipping cost as low as possible. We have made the box smaller, but still large enough to fit everything. We have set up the punch boards better in order to reduce them. We have a weight and size maximum limit in mind and we are aiming to keep it under that limit.
Nevertheless, during this campaign, things might change. So we will charge the shipping cost during the pledge management after the campaign has finished.
Here is an estimation of what freight cost might be expected, based on current size and weight. For a single box pledge:
- US - SEK 125 / €13 / $15
- CA - SEK 125 / €13 / $15
- EU - SEK 140 / €15 / $17
- Non EU Europe - SEK 155 / €17 / $19
- AU - SEK 140 / €15 / $17
- NZ - SEK 195 / €19 / $24
- Everywhere Else - SEK 285 / €30 / $35
Kindly note that there are a few countries that has caused some problems in shipping and we are unable to send to; Russia, Ukraina and a few more in the Middle East.
We have a storage center in Rotterdam, Holland where we store our games so all EU pledges will be sent from there. From there, we send also to Iceland for local distribution. Note that some Non EU Countries might add taxes to your pledge.
We will also work with an American based service agent for all US, CA & Mexico. Same with Australia. Shipments to Asian countries will be sent directly from China.
Other countries might add some taxes or customs fee.
Risks and challenges
We a now re-launching our campaign for Ancient Aliens. We launched it first in July, but we realized that there where a few improvements needed for the game as well as better approach for the campaign itself. So we decided to cancel it only 10 days in.
We have used the time to further improve the game and the campaign. We are working with Wingo games and in cooperation with them we are creating a product of high quality.
Ancient Aliens is 99% complete and is ready to go straight into production after everything has been over viewed, unless som last minute changes appear. Everything in the current game has been developed, drawn and designed. If everything goes as planned, we aim to distribute the game in May 2018. If there will be many additional stretch goals unlocked it might delay the delivery.
If the Kickstarter campaign will not be successful, it is more likely that this game will never get produced as we that stand behind the project are doing this with our own resources and in our free time.
We hope the game will appeal to you as strongly as it has with us so that we can see this project get into the players hands! That is our main goal!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
