I was really hoping to crack a bottle on this night. But alas, it looks as if I am going to have to put it back on ice.

We really appreciate all of the support that we have gotten from the lot of you. We hope that you will stick with us and will have our backs on our next endeavor(sinbad). We are doing things a bit differently on that one so we hope that you all stop by and check it out when it goes live!

      Again thank you to everyone!

Thanks so much, Amanda! We really appreciate the support. :)

Got some money in today, so I upped my pledge to Dark Sorcerer.

    4. Kat on December 14, 2012

I think a lot of people are feeling the holiday money crunch. I know I am too. But I would still love this project to get funded. Especially because they might down the road come out with a mini line for the Saga of Dragon Star characters. Western D&D figures to paint would be AWESOME!

    5. Ryan Riojas on December 14, 2012

I have seen some projects surge at the last minute so hopefully.

If not running it again in the spring may be a good idea, I know for myself holiday concerns hampered my ability to keep the level I initially wanted.

Tried the NGR beta and it was alot of fun.
And Saga is a great setting.

    6. Kat on December 13, 2012

@Craig Absolutely. We only need $8,342 to get this funded. That means

      - 334 New Apprentices (each backer gets 2 friends to get a softcover book)
      - 167 New Dark Sorcerers (each backer gets 1 friend to get a hardcover book)

Of course if you can get a friend to sign on to an Adventure Lord or higher than we're that much closer. But if we pool our friends, we can make this. :)

    7. Grail2oblivion on December 13, 2012

@Everyone(except for one:P) Thanks for the great comments! I love the turn that this conversation has taken!

Its been a long ride full of ups and downs and it is almost coming to a close. We are not out yet!

    8. Kat on December 13, 2012

@EpicRPGBlog I definitely agree that the cinematic system is a better system for Wild West, especially Weird Wild West. @Amanda I haven't played most of those RPGs but they sound like fun. Over the last few years, I've scaled back on my gaming because of life/kids/career; however, I'm starting to get more free time and love the idea of getting into some of these new independent RPGs.

    9. R.S.Tilton (EpicRPGBlog) on December 13, 2012

That's why I was a Far West backer...why Deadlands was one on my favorite settings, and why I backed this project...Westerns are fun...fantasy Westerns are More fun...cinematic systems are better than simulationist systems also...much better...more dynamic ...less "optimized"...which has become a bad me.

    10. Amanda "Hyena" Johnson on December 13, 2012

More than just Serenity/Firefly: There's C.O.W-Boys of Moo Mesa (Seeing as they have Minotaurs as a player race), Deadlands, Werewolf: the Wild West, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, mass etc.
And I was a huge fan of History Channel's Wild West Tech when they used to air it.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to combine the Wild West genre with basic D&D. It seems people flock to or use Steam-Punk more these days than the Weird West or Future Retro. In fact, Future Retro started out as Western dime novels taking place in outer space. In short order: There need to be more RPG settings on the Weird West or Future Retro.

I was on the fence on this one for a long time since I had other kickstarters I was interested in helping out first. However, I'm wondering, how come we can't add another softcover as an add-on for $25? It just seems like the add-on menu takes a huge gap between a pdf. towards a hardcover without a softcover in-between those two.

    11. Kazekami on December 13, 2012

Pledge in and drop out only to spread some negative thoughts? This will truly help …
I am backing this project because of the N.R.G. system in combination with one unique setting.
I also recommend to download the freebies from the Game Smiths’ website, to see the potential of the game.
My quick Google research (search string: n.r.g. system preview) produces many positive results—like this one:

    12. Kat on December 13, 2012

The best way to deal with a troll is to ignore them. Better yet, let's start a discussion on why we think it would be fun to play. When I saw a D&D meets Western, it made me think of another unlikely mix that rocked, Serenity.

    13. Grail2oblivion on December 13, 2012

I think I just witnessed my first kickstarter troll!

    14. R.S.Tilton (EpicRPGBlog) on December 13, 2012

Yeah he's gone...looks like he backed long enough to drop a nastygram...then unpledged...Cast him out as a Pledgebreaker!!!

    15. Grail2oblivion on December 13, 2012

@Kevin: Please explain your thoughts behind your comment. We encouraged people to download our lite beta from the get go.

This is a terrible game, and all of you who are saying it's great should look online and hopefully you'll find a dissection of exactly why this game is bad.

But if you don't feel like going off to google, you should at least look at the rules if you haven't already and ask yourself whether you really want to play that.

    17. Zankabo on December 13, 2012

I would say try the kickstarter again after the holiday season. I am betting the biggest problem is that, because it is ending so close to xmas, people just don't have the money handy to buy into it.

    18. Jeff Scifert
      on December 13, 2012

Absolutely agree with the comments about backing out. "Do or Do Not. There is no try."

    19. R.S.Tilton (EpicRPGBlog) on December 12, 2012

I couldn't agree more Ken...If all those people who've backed out in the last week were still on board, we'd be close to goal...instead of losing more and more...

    20. Ken Thronberry on December 12, 2012

I can't help but thinking of folks who back out of pledges in the denoument of a project as having a lack of character. It doesn't even cost them anything if the funding falls short, & it makes last minute campaigning very difiicult.

    21. John "King" Roberts on December 11, 2012

Up and down, up and down.. almost makes me dizzy with the pledge amount changing so much. Sad that this probably won't make it and that it will be shelved for an undermined about of time if it doesn't...

    22. Tybot on December 8, 2012

I dig this game idea and look. Heard about you guys on BJ Shey's Geek Nation!

@Kazekami: No, grids are not necessary! I mean, they help, but only as much as in, say, Pathfinder or similar game. But it's not necessary, like 4E is necessary. Thanks for the support, and the question!

    24. John "King" Roberts on December 7, 2012

Seems we are losing money.... makes me a little sad. This was such a good idea and had a great pitch.

    25. Kazekami on December 7, 2012

Amazing news! Thanks for finally making the Saga of Dragon Star an official N.R.G. Setting. After a truly “Black Friday” I canceled my pledge, but update #13 has kicked me back in for three hardcovers, screen and adventure. I believe we can make it — RPG Kickstarters tend to go off the scale in the last 48 hours.

One question related to the N.R.G. system: Is a grid/battlemap mandatory or optional?

    26. Michael Mikolajczyk on December 7, 2012

I hope this gets funded. Wonderful project.

No, if that were to happen, we would shelve them for an indefinite period of time while we focus on our other I.P.s that are in the pipeline. Thanks for asking!

    28. R.S.Tilton (EpicRPGBlog) on December 6, 2012

What are the plans if this doesn't make it? Will you be trying again with a more focused approach?

    29. R.S.Tilton (EpicRPGBlog) on December 4, 2012

Yeah, that totally sucks, think FATE Core might have snagged some?

    30. John "King" Roberts on December 3, 2012

sadly it seems we lost a ton of backing...

    31. Hugo Solis on November 29, 2012

Looks like it's starting to get back on track. :)

We really, really appreciate your support, John! And we still hope to be able to get those. Long way off (illustrations and minis are really, really expensive), but we still have a few weeks!

Also, love the avatar! *thumbs up*

    37. Kazekami on November 20, 2012

As we didn’t make it to the GM screen bonus, will the screen become available on the “à la carte menu”?
When will we get a definite decision if the Saga of Dragon Star setting will be converted to the N.R.G. system?

    38. Missing avatar

Game Smiths LLC (deleted) Creator on November 20, 2012

@Jamin: The Saga of Dragon Star will be available for both Pathfinder & Savage Worlds with this Kickstarter, so character creation will be based on those respective rules. Likely the PF version will not include new classes, but instead archetypes.

@Andrew: N.R.G. is a class- and level-based system. The rulebook will not come with its own setting, but the genre will clearly be more sword-and-sorcery and fantasy (I would say more like Dungeons & Dragons than GURPS). It will not include modern or sci-fi elements at this time.

    39. Jamin on November 20, 2012

How would you describe character creation flexibility for Saga of Dragon Star?

    40. Andrew M on November 20, 2012

Would the N.R.G system be something Generic like Gurps or is it more bolt-on like Savage Worlds or is it's own unique setting, and if so what could be described as that setting (fantasy, post modern, etc.)?

    41. Missing avatar

Game Smiths LLC (deleted) Creator on November 19, 2012

Maneuvers are definitely the main, stand-apart mechanic for the N.R.G. System. That, and the way damage is dealt (based on the success of the attack, rather than a separate damage roll). We encourage you to check out our free downloads over at have a Light Beta Rules doc there, as well as a free adventure! :) And thanks so much for pledging--please let us know if you have any further questions!

    42. Andrew M on November 19, 2012

And backed.. question about the N.R.G system besides maneuvers is there anything else that would stand out (familiar with both Savage Worlds and Dungeons and Dragons.. as well as several other rpgs.) how does it differ from them?

@Senator Cybus: Whoa! Our first Master Sorcerer!!! We're really looking forward to your adventure, and once this Kickstarter finishes, we can start whipping up ideas on what the adventure should be about! In the meantime, please feel free to head on over to our forums and register and post some ideas now, if you already got something cooking! :) Once the KS is finished, we will also set you (and other Master Thieves) up on our internal developer forums--welcome aboard!

    45. Jamin on November 18, 2012

If we want an a la carte item, how do we confirm what we want? Will this just be a post-Kickstarter survey? Thanks!

Nothing--these are meant to be early-bird specials! Once the $90 is out, there will still be some $95! After that, it will just be the $100. :)

Whats the difference between the 90 and 95 dollar level?
