About this project
THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS FOR MAKING CAMDEN HAPPEN!!
Camden is a market-themed tile laying game designed by James Ernest and illustrated by John Kovalic set in the popular shopping district of London called Camden Lock. The game plays in around 30 minutes and is designed for 2 to 4 players.
Game Design: James Ernest is an award winning game designer with hundreds of publication credits. Ernest's design for Camden artfully blends a high strategy spatial awareness mechanic with a very fun risk management system that is enjoyable for novice and expert players alike.
Illustrations: John Kovalic's brilliant writing and whimsical artistic style have made the Dork Tower comic and Munchkin international hits. Born in England and at one time a London resident, Kovalic brilliantly captures the uniquely British experience of Camden Lock.
Publisher: Boyan Radakovich is the creative director for Gamesmith and an associate producer on the wildly popular webseries TableTop featured on Felicia Day's premium YouTube channel Geek & Sundry. Boyan leveraged his industry contacts to bring together an all-star team to develop and produce Camden at the highest possible production value.
In Camden, you play as shop keepers in London's popular market district Camden Lock trying to sell your wares to the locals and unsuspecting tourists. You will set up stalls specializing in selling t-shirts, food, music and bric-a-brac to earn money. Each turn, you will try to expand your business while trying to build shops that cut off traffic to your rivals. The gameplay has a dynamic area-control mechanic that really tests your spatial awareness and strategy, while simultaneously ratcheting tension with a clever risk management system. Will the Bobby catch you selling illegal goods and evict you before you can cash in on a tourist holiday?
The basic turn sequence for Camden is:
- 1) Get paid for every stall you have open,
- 2) Draw a new tile and check to see if a special event has occurred,
- 3) Play a tile according to the very flexible placement rules to maximize your profits while increasing the risk of your rivals,
- 4) Then, you may purchase a new shop (optional).
The first player to 50 quid wins! Game play usually lasts around 30 minutes and is well balanced for 2, 3 and 4 players.
Into Carcassonne and Lords of Vegas? You'll love Camden.
Adore John Kovalic's art in Dork Tower and Munchkin? You'll love the look of Camden! Like area control risk management games illustrated by Kovalic? Then Camden has been created for your exact genetic profile!!
Each pledge level includes all the benefits of the levels beneath it.

We chose Kickstarter, because Kickstarter is about the community. Kickstarter is a brilliant collection of some of the most creative people -- artists, game designers, film makers -- and the type of fans that truly get it. Because we're making games for each other here, you understand our level of commitment, the long hours working at the computer to make something special that we can share, and the true creative expression that occurs when a small group of like-minded people come together to create something new. Kickstarter is a direct line of communication to you, our fans. Kickstarter brings us all closer together. So, we're really looking forward to sharing our passion with you.
Do right by the creator. Being an independent game publisher allows us to give much more artistic freedom and rewards directly to the creators who make the games that you support. There is no one above James telling him to change the game mechanics to fit a different demographic or above Kovalic telling him to add a charismatic turtle to the game because that tested well in some focus group. No, we made Camden exactly the way we wanted. Kickstarter allows you to support us, the creator, directly in this process without any obstacles. And this direct connection provides for a clearer expression of the gaming experience.
Make games we're proud to share. Being an independent game publisher also allows us to really make beautiful games that you'll be proud to share. Boyan made sure that we only used the highest quality components in producing Camden -- linen finished tiles, cloth bag, attractive glass beads, and sturdy packaging to survive your travels. This is why Kickstarter is amazing. We don't have to cut corners and skimp on materials because by sponsoring directly, we can produce the game at a much higher level without increasing the costs to the fans.
One last thing that's really wonderful about Kickstarter is that it allows us to really open up our production pipeline. Normally, new game publishers might come out with one or maybe two games in the first year. Kickstarter and your sponsorship allows us to come out with 3 to 4 games on launch. What this means is that instead of waiting for years to get a game in each category or the next best expansion that really adds to gameplay, we can do all that instead in mere months. Brilliant really. And it's thanks to your support!
Can I still get Camden after the Kickstarter campaign? Yes. Camden will be sold through your favorite retailer both during this Kickstarter campaign and also once the game has been produced. So your friends and family can pick up new copies of Camden once this Kickstarter campaign is over. But unfortunately, all the really cool sponsorship benefits like the signed author plate, art prints, gift-wrapped presents and tickets to your favorite gaming conventions may not be available after this Kickstarter campaign finishes. After all, that's what makes them exclusive to you. Unfortunately, Kickstarter has made some very recent changes regarding retail support which is restricting our retailer levels. Gamesmith views the local gamestore as the gaming culture's community center. If you have a favorite local gamestore near you that you'd like Gamesmith to support after the Kickstarter campaign, please contact us. We'd love to run events, special promotions and give away cool swag at your FLGS. So, please send us that info!
Please share this message and let's make Camden happen!
Special thanks to:
Lindsey Koens and Brenton Murrell from Geek & Sundry for all their help actually filming, directing and producing this video,
Elisa Jaeger and Joe Teague from Cupcake Quarterly for providing the studio space and lighting to make this video happen,
and especially Alan Caudel for his amazing job editing all the raw footage and really telling a compelling story while still keeping it real.
This Kickstarter video would never have happened without their dedication and support. Thank you!
And to all of YOU in the Kickstarter community, thank you for letting us share our passion for tabletop gaming with you!!
SNEAK PEEK OF THE NEXT GAMESMITH KICKSTARTERS!!
Gamesmith is an independent Oregon-based tabletop games publisher focused on bringing you the best possible games designed and illustrated by the top creative talent in the community. Our motto is to do right by the creator and always make games we're proud to share with our friends and family.
In short, yes. James has designed several hundred tabletop, gambling, and electronic games in his career; but Agora has always been one of our favorites. All it really needed was some higher production value in terms of packaging and components and it would be a wonderful game for any gaming group. We upgraded every possible component in the game (see post below!) from the very beginning to make sure you get the best possible game. You'll love playing Camden with your friends.
You're going to be impressed with the production quality of the components. We start with a sturdy 8" x 8" setup box made of heavy chipboard to withstand the rigors of joining your collections and traveling to gamenight. The rules cards have been upgraded to large linen-finished player mats beautifully illustrated by John Kovalic. The tiles are all two-sided full-color printed linen-finished tiles (similar to Carcassonne). The money will come as high quality chip board coins, you'll have a cloth woven bag to contain all your components, and the player markers will be painted wooden pawns and attractive glass beads. Like we said, you're going to be proud to share this game with your friends!
This is one of the many reasons why Camden is an awesome game; deep strategy players will really enjoy the spatial awareness tile-laying and risk-management game mechanics, but the casual family player will really enjoy the ease of play and incredibly short learning time with fast turns that are fun and give novice players a chance to win. Whether a core hobbyist or a casual game player, you'll definitely get your 30-45 minutes of fun in this fast and strategic tile laying game.
We're really honored to be able to work with such talented creators on our projects and John's whimsical artistic style really adds to the fun of Camden. His art is featured on the cover, inside the rules booklet, and on the large full color linen-finished player mats. Since John was so busy working on Munchkin and Dork Tower, his art probably won't be displayed on the tiles themselves. Instead, our mutual friend and equally talented artist, Hal Mangold, will be bringing the project to final completion. And if you like John's art, please back at the Art Collector level or higher and get one of the signed limited edition prints.
Absolutely! PAX is an amazing convention for the gaming community and we're proud to make our debut at PAX East, but there is a lot of concern that the show will sell out. Please don't go to Scalper Alley or hover over the refresh button on day one of ticket sales! Instead, join the Gamesmith family and not only get a basic badge, but get special access to the dealer hall with us and hang with our celebrity friends at the industry parties in the evening! The PAX Party level is seriously the best deal when you look at the exclusive value added!!
This one is tricky. We understand that as Kickstarters, we want simple and fair options for delivery of our products. This can be difficult with physical distribution, especially on the world stage. Instead of having 50 different rates for each region, we tried to make it as simple as possible. Shipping to Canada is roughly as expensive as shipping to the UK or some parts of Europe. And while there are some areas that are cheaper still, there are also others that are more expensive. We felt a simple flat rate would help level the playing field for everyone, and we're committed to making sure you get your games at the best rate possible.
We have an exclusive Kickstarter level specifically designed for retailers. You get a case of games, a free demo unit, a box of swag and three limited-edition signed Kovalic prints. When you realize that only 25 Camden prints will be made available, those 3 signed prints in your retail pack really set the FLGS level apart from just a simple case-pack sale. And once the Kickstarter campaign is over, Camden will be commercially available through normal distribution channels. So, you can always get more Camden and keep your community members happy!
