About this project
What's your favorite action show or movie? Pretend I missed it and need you to tell me everything awesome that happened. That's kind of how you storygame.
Hearts Blazing is a casual card-driven storygame for 3 to 5 players who have a love of melodramatic sci-fi series. After generating a fictional setting together, players take on the roles of dynamic but recognizable sci-fi archetypes. Love, loss, betrayal, action, adventure and episodic operatics get packed into a free-wheeling, swift playing 1 - 2 hour romp.
After almost a year in development Hearts Blazing is tested and table ready. We have held ongoing playtests since 2015 across the United Sates & Canada and incorporated feedback into the evolving design. The trial print run completely sold out at PAX East 2016! Now our manufacturer is ready to print for serious and our shipping and distribution channels are set to go. All we need now is your help.
"The game was a lot of fun. We had a mix of seasoned and new role-players and they were all able to easily pick up the rules and really get into the story. We had a blast with the game" - Kat Jones, Revived, There's a Fan Fic For That...
"The easily accessible tropes get you in a good head space to tell stories. Really fun competitive mechanic" - Dustin DePenning, Synthecide Will Power Games
"I had an absolute blast playing this game and all of my friends loved it. In fact, I had my best roleplaying experience I’ve ever had in the game we played, and it was without a doubt due to the cards and the story they helped us create. And I can think of no higher compliment than that. This game is really something special." - Corinne Taylor, Dreamation Playtester
"I liked how easy it was to pick up and play. I sat down with two friends and we pretty much hit the ground running." Alex Roberts, Backstory Podcast
"Unlike my last game, this story ended up being super silly! I like that the system can handle both depending on the whims of the players. Also, the episode cards were perfect - they gave us some direction but were vague enough to allow us room to take it in multiple directions." - Erin Ryan, Cardboard Republic
"I like the idea of a storytelling game that simulates long-form science fiction television. To be more specific, I like *this* game that simulates long-form science fiction television!" - Jason Walters, Indie Press Revolution
Hearts Blazing is a for anyone who enjoys stories, games and/or storygames. The quick and approachable style of Hearts Blazing clichés and episodes are designed to applaud players' imaginations, tease out the threads of an epic tale, and to give you a helping hand when your mind draws a blank. Episode prompts provide the framework and jumping off point for fast paced short stories. As your epic unfolds, episodes flow into one another ratcheting up the stakes.
After collaboratively sketching out a fictional setting, players take on the roles of dynamic but memorable archetypes of popular fiction. Drawing story prompts from an episode deck, players collaboratively create a wild tale of adventure and drama. By bidding clichés on each episode, they capture keywords associated with their hidden motivations and compete to see who has final say on the fate of their story . Depending on their collective bid, episodes can unfold in numerous configurations.
Whatever the result, the team, guided by their cliché bids and episode prompts, will cooperatively narrate an evolving epic of adventure, danger and passion.
Or take a few minutes to stuff this how-to-play into your eye/ear holes.

Cash flow! Games by Play Date is a completely boot-strapped company. We don't have deep-pocket backers and our families won't let us put our houses in hock. Since manufacturing costs take the form of large, upfront, cash deposits we need to raise a modest chunk of capital to meet what we believe the inventory demand for Hearts Blazing will be.
Also, we're trying something a bit different this time.
• No stretch goals.
• No complicated reward tiers.
If you back the game you get the game. If you toss us a couple of bucks you get our thanks and a hearty greeting. We're not in the business of making T-Shirts or promising super cool hangouts with indie game celebs; we came here to make games. Period. Full Stop.
On that front, this game is D-O-N-E. Backers won't need to worry about long development delays, midstream team changes or spontaneous redesigns. It's ready for your game night.
Each copy of Hearts Blazing will contain 126 cards, a rules booklet, a two piece box and our undying love.
Games by Play Date is a game design and publishing studio centered in Southern New Hampshire. We make analog games that interest us and are fun to play. Sometimes our games are about:
• shoving heaps of treasure into your satchel (Pack the Pack)
• making your favorite pop culture icons 'get busy' (slash)
• wearing frouffy collars and having coins thrown at you (The Show Must Go On!)
• learning patience and empathy so you can help a friend in distress (Bad Habit)
Meg, Dan and Glenn are the principle operators of GPD, though we owe unquantifiable kudos to our players, play testers, friends and family.
Risks and challenges
Hearts Blazing will be the 4th Kickstarter campaign from Games by Play Date. We have a strong record of satisfied backers because of our experience in print publishing and crowdfunding.
We have a reliable manufacturer, Ningbo Lijia Industry Co., LTD., on board to provide an exceptional quality product in a reasonable timeframe. We have worked with Ningbo on numerous projects in the past few years and they have never failed to meet our rigorous expectations.
After the campaign, Games by Play Date will maintain regular (at least once per month) updates to backers and the public relaying all relevant manufacturing, delivery and fulfillment news.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
