There's nothing like posting up on a slow Saturday morning on your front porch or at your favorite coffee shop with a great magazine. And when that publication is full of interesting stories and slick artwork from your favorite sport, making you look like the coolest person in the room? It doesn't get much better than that.
That's the feeling we're capturing with Game Point, a quarterly print magazine honoring the creativity of hoops and the characters who shape the game.
We're starting Game Point because there is no shortage of blogs and websites covering basketball, but there are very few print outlets dedicating the necessary pages to the hardwood.
And none have packaged the stories we want to read with the visuals we want to see in a magazine that we want to hold. So we’re going to do it our way and we want your help in this journey.
This large, lengthy, high-quality magazine will feature sharp writing, beautiful artwork and clean design for basketball fans who appreciate the aesthetics and imagination found within the basketball universe.
Game Point will be thick with original writing covering the NBA, NCAA, international basketball and the WNBA, with incredible art and design to match.
We’re producing Game Point in print because we feel like the stories being written and visuals created deserve to be showcased for you in a high-quality way.
While we expect Game Point to exist digitally as well, there will be no better way for you to experience our contributors' brilliant work than by thumbing through the pages of an actual magazine.
Not only that, but it will look cool as hell displayed on your coffee table or nightstand and is sure to impress the pants off anyone who sees it.
Four times a year we’ll mail subscribers a big, beautiful magazine light on ads and heavy on excellent writing, artwork and design showcasing the beauty and fun of basketball.
Each issue of Game Point will contain:
- 100+ pages of content with little in the way of ads
- A ton of beautiful artwork from some of the best basketball illustrators around
- A bunch of interesting feature stories from talented basketball writers
- Everything packaged in a cool, quality print magazine that is at home being read in your favorite coffee shop or displayed on your coffee table at home
We just need the help of Kickstarter and the hoops community to get off the ground. The money raised in this crowdfunding campaign will pay for printing and shipping costs, and compensate contributors for their work.
Quality is our first priority and we’re trying to raise the funds to reflect that in the final product. Game Point has been in the works for months and with your help, it’ll be in your hands by the beginning of the next NBA season.
My name is Andrew McNeill and I’m the founder of Game Point. I covered the San Antonio Spurs and the NBA for several seasons at the ESPN TrueHoop Network and was fortunate to report from a number of big-time events in that time including the NBA Finals, All-Star Weekend and the Las Vegas Summer League.
We’ve got an amazing group of writers and illustrators lined up and waiting to get to work on the first issue of Game Point. These contributors—including J.O. Applegate, Chelsea Boehnke, Chris Edser, Mirin Fader, Elliot Gerard, Graydon Gordian, Matthew Hollister, Mike Monroe, Jack Perkins, Michael Pina, Caleb Saenz, Ryan Simpson, Will Tullos, Matthew Tynan, Jared Wade and Lang Whitaker—have done work for Bleacher Report, ESPN the Magazine, ESPN.com, FanSided, FOX Sports, NBA.com, SLAM Magazine, Sports on Earth, VICE Sports, and more.
Collectively, our team has the chops in layout design, copy editing and magazine production to deliver to you an amazing publication full of interesting stories and creative visuals by opening tip of the next NBA season.
Anyone who has ever played pickup basketball knows the two best words to hear when you're on the winning side are "Game Point." It's with that same enthusiasm that we present Game Point.
The American soccer community sustains multiple well-written, design-driven magazines, such as 8 by 8, The Green Soccer Journal and Howler. We believe the basketball community, which is both growing in size and constantly deepening its understanding of the game, can sustain a similar magazine.
Likewise, we believe the success of print publications like Kill Screen, Makeshift and Victory Journal suggest a wide variety of sports and entertainment fans are willing to pay for a beautiful, thoughtful print product.
We're incredibly excited to bring you Game Point, a new publication hosting some of the best basketball writing and artwork around. We just need an assist from you to make it happen.
Printing and mailing a large, high-quality magazine isn't cheap and we need the support of the amazing community of basketball fans out there to make this publication happen.
So please click on the green "Back This Project" button and help us make this top-notch basketball quarterly a reality, and make the extra pass by sharing this campaign with the hoops lovers that you know.
Now that we're a couple of weeks into our campaign, we wanted to include a few stretch goals beyond our $50,000 funding goal to encourage our backers to continue to spread the word about Game Point.
$60,000: Backers of the Early Offense Tier and greater will receive an 18x24 print of the cover illustration from Issue #1 along with all the other great rewards for their tier. This awesome poster will look great hanging on the wall of your office, living room, above your bed, wherever.
$75,000: If we hit $75,000 in funding, backers of the Regular Season Debut Tier or greater will receive a Game Point T-shirt along with all of the other fantastic rewards that go along with their corresponding tier. Backers of the Early Offense Tier and greater will receive the t-shirt along with the print poster.
Risks and challenges
When putting together a publication of this size, there will always be risks. We're going analog in a digital world. Likewise, this is not a cheap endeavor so we run the risk of running out of funds thanks to fluctuations in printing and shipping costs.
That being said, we believe there is a market for a high-quality quarterly basketball magazine and have no doubts that a subscriber base with the potential for serious growth. The success that other independent print magazines are having today gives us tremendous encouragement.
Additionally, we're confident in the amount of research we've done in getting estimates and planning out what resources are needed in order to make our funding goal last.
Additionally, the writers and illustrators who have agreed to contribute to Game Point are willing to work for rates far below what they deserve as we launch the magazine because they believe in what we're doing.
Likewise, the team we've put together has tremendous experience in writing and reporting, art and layout design, editing, and magazine production. We've got all of our bases covered and know that the incredible people involved will deliver to you a high-quality product.
With as much as we’re going to be cramming into each issue of Game Point, there’s a small chance the first issue will be delayed as we figure out our workflow.
That being said, we’re already planning out issue #1 and fully expect that we’ve given ourselves enough time to produce the launch issue and have it delivered to you in time for the tip-off of the next NBA season in October.
There will be bumps in the road, but we’ll get to where we’re going and want you along for the ride as we start what we expect to be an excellent new hoops magazine.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
