About this project
Every Day is Play.
It will showcase the works of designers, musicians, artists, writers and developers that have taken inspiration from the art that we grew up with.
Through a series of features and interviews, covering everything from fan art to game modifications, we aim to provide not only a beautiful book but a wealth of creative play.
We did it — together. Every Day is Play! A million thanks to everybody involved, let's Celebrate the Game.
Retail copies, full details and updates can be found at www.gamepaused.net
The project has received a great deal of creative submissions from a varied range of contributors across various fields, both inside and outside the gaming industry. Together, with your support, we can make this project a reality and capture a snapshot of todays gaming culture.
Core to the project, the Every Day is Play book will be a high-quality, locally (UK) litho-printed publication, hardback with a cloth cover.
Base Spec (TBC.)
Although still in the development stage, the initial base specification we have been working to for design and production costs is as follows:
Hardback Cloth Cover, 200x240mm Portrait, 200+ Pages, Litho Printed + Special Inks, Multiple Paper Stocks / Weights.
Design wise, the grid structure and layout style will allow a great deal of content to be shown. Subtle type hierarchy and text details will provide artist and feature information. Ultimately, the design of the book shouldn't detract from the real content — contributed works.
The response we have had so far has been brilliant, and we have been blown away by the artists who have sent works. A growing mix of different topics from all creative areas has really started to take shape.

Our core goal of the project is naturally to get the actual book in peoples hands for everybody to enjoy the content. However, we have a range of rewards to let people support the project at all levels.
Help support the project. Have your name on the website archive as a supporter of the project and download some Game Paused desktop and mobile wallpapers, exclusive to Kickstarter supporters. Follow the story with access to backer updates.
Screen based version of the book in various formats, DRM free and ready to view on all your devices. Because the main emphasis of the project is a printed publication, the digital version will be a static ebook (will not include interactive items or video). Name in the Ebook as a supporter, plus wallpaper downloads. 8x8 pixel area on the poster (See 'Backer Created Poster' after rewards).
The core of the project. Hardback edition (Yellow cloth cover) featuring the curated works and features of the whole project. Every backer at this level gets their name featured in the book as a multiplayer supporter and everything from the previous rewards. 16x16 pixel area on the poster (See 'Backer Created Poster' after rewards).
3b—3x Book Page [Standard Edition] International Postage Saver
We have introduced this multi-pack to help international backers with postage costs from the United Kingdom. With the book looking to weigh around 1.3kg per copy, it's going to be pretty hefty even for one. We can get three copies bundled together delivered internationally, coming in under 5kg (the maximum we can send together). Group with friends or grab extra copies to give out as gifts—saving a pretty package (intended!) on postage costs. 16x16 pixel (x3) area on the poster (See 'Backer Created Poster' after rewards).
Unfortunately, the maximum weight for Printed Papers is 2kg to Canada and Cambodia, so we currently can't offer this to these locations. We are looking at alternative options for these destinations.
3c—The Book: Custom Wrapped Special
NEW! Special, one-of-a-kind book wraps covering the standard edition hardback book. Each and every wrapped edition comes with a random bespoke, foil stamped cover wrap featuring a single piece of art/design from inside the book. No two are the same.
Your name and custom data will be printed on the inside flap of the wrap making it truly yours, and yours only. Includes everything from the standard edition book, and a special mention with cover image on the website. 16x16 pixel area on the poster (See 'Backer Created Poster' after rewards).
The area on the inside flap has space for your own custom message too — making it the ideal place to write something special if buying it as a gift.
4—The Console Pack [Standard Edition]
'Game Console' inspired box set containing the book, screen-printed T-Shirt, A2 Litho Poster and Instruction Sheet.
Your name and details featured in special *Bonus Level* pages as the book as a key supporter. Includes everything from the previous rewards.

Backer Created Poster.
The concept of the dynamic, user generated poster is to provide a blank canvas for backers to express themselves creatively, and combine together to represent everybody. Rather than just names, each backer gets allocated a set of pixels and can use these pixels to create anything they like. A fully user created art print with a truly random result that even we don't know what the outcome will be — like a game in itself.
Pixel Counts for backers:
- 1Bit - Single Black Pixel for Supporter Level
- 8Bit - 8x8 Pixel Area for Digital Book Level
- 16Bit - 16x16 Pixel Area for Book/Wrapped Book Level
- 32Bit - 32x32 Pixel Area for Standard Box Level
- 64Bit - 64x64 Pixel Area for Legendary Box/Boss Mode Level
For example: 16Bit level. You get a 16x16 pixel square to design however you like — your initials or name, your face, your fav character etc. The notion of not knowing the final outcome is very interesting, a bit scary, but at its core — super fun!
Every backer expressed as pixels, celebrating the game!
You won't be expected to create these pixels on computers with graphics software (although that would be great), a simple sketch/drawing over a grid we will send out will be enough for us (well Matt, pixel by pixel) to include it on the poster.
Print and production is our largest cost, comprised solely on producing all the items for backers — Books, Paper, Boxes, Posters, T-Shirts and Coins. Design, interviews and any other time related to producing this book has not been accounted for.
The standard 10% combined cost for Kickstarter fees and payment processing has been factored in.
Fulfillment and postage has been the trickiest cost to work out. The book and box dimensions, plus varied weights make international postage an art in itself. UK postage costs are contained in the pledge amounts (you can't set local postage on Kickstarter). These local costs are then removed from international postage amounts to work out fair worldwide postage.
Game Paused is a project by Matthew Kenyon, a graphic designer/developer from the north of England and his partner Emma Wilcock, a Creative Manager at Hallmark Cards UK.
Created by Matthew in 2005 to merge two of his greatest passions together (design & games), after building a piece of art inspired by the Nintendo NES console, Game Paused aims to promote video game culture through a combination of games and art.
We will be posting both general and backer-only updates on here as well as snippets, quotes and other bits of information whenever possible.
Follow us on Twitter @gamepaused for artist/submission news.
Call for Submissions.
The book is a collaborative project, and submissions are still open! If you would like to contribute and have your work featured in the book, or know others that would be suitable, be sure to visit gamepaused.net/submissions for up to date details on how to submit.
Both Emma and I are really excited to be working on this project, and are overjoyed with some of the responses to the idea already. We really appreciate your time for viewing this, and would love to make this happen with your help—through support, funding or actual creative contributions.
Risks and challenges
Design / Production:
Experience as designers in the print industry for over ten years doesn't mean that we won't be subject to production problems. However, it does mean we are aware of issues that could arise. We have chosen a well respected design-led printing company direct in the UK to both minimise any possible problems and also to be close by if any do occur — ensuring that the end product is absolutely the best it can be. This also means we can document the whole process in much more detail without international travel.
As with any project dealing with international postage, there are risks involved that can affect delivery, many out of our hands. We will be using Royal Mail for delivery of backer rewards and if anything should go wrong, we will make sure any backers receive their goods.
The nature of a large scale community project has a few potential risks involved, mainly regarding the supply of content. The response to the book so far has been amazing, and the contributor/interview list is still growing. We do not see content amount being an issue for this book. On the flip-side of this, the large amount of content we have been receiving means that not everything will be able to be featured in the book. This wouldn't affect the final production from a technical point of view, but could upset both contributors and ourselves.
Yes! The submission process doesn't end until September — we wanted to make sure that everybody had chance to submit work for consideration. We really don't want to miss out on any of the creativity of the Kickstarter community.
The book is estimated at a weight of 1.3kg. It gets pretty costly to post weights over 1kg to locations outside the EU from the United Kingdom.
It's heavy. Heavy content!
We have made a triple pack that helps save postage costs — pledge together with friends or buy as gifts to save money.
That would be telling.
Sure. Just double the pledge cost and postage — and we can organise from there.
If buying three books however, use the triple pack pledge to save on postage.
Book orders larger than 3 become a big problem due to weight, we can't ship over 5kg in one go, and it's 2kg in Canada and Cambodia.
The official deadline may have passed — but we will be designing this until december. Surprise us!
