Read about Game of Phones!
- ‘Game of Phones’, A Clever Card Game That Is Played Using Smartphones on Laughing Squid.
- You (glorious pledger)
- Your friends (as many as you can fit around a table)
- Your smartphones (sorry dumbphoners)
- One deck of cards (100 prompts but infinite possibilities)
Here's how it works.
One player picks a card and gets to judge that round. They read the prompt to everyone else. Something like 'Find the best #selfie' or 'Show the last photo you took'. Everyone finds something on their phones and shows the judge, who gets to choose a winner for that round. First to win 10 rounds is the overall winner.
That's pretty much it. Simple right? But with different friends and the internet in your hands the game is totally different each time you play. It's limitless fun. Especially after a beer or two. Not that we advocate drinking.
Here are a few of the cards:
What's the story?
Sam and Luke are design students in New York City. We're fascinated by the way technology is changing everyday behavior. Not long ago, excessively checking your phone was considered anti-social. Now you're probably too busy checking your own phone to complain that someone else isn't listening.
But sometimes phones can make conversations better too. A funny photo is funnier than a description of a funny photo.
We had a weird idea for a card game that involved phones, and when we tested it out on our friends it turned out to be super fun. Plus, by bringing phones into the game they somehow become less of a distraction. No time to check your email when you're in a heated round of 'Find the weirdest Google Image search result for your name'.
So 'Game of Phones' was born.
We laughed. People shrieked. No one cried yet. We think you'll love it.
Using your phone at a party used to be anti-social, now it's the name of the game (literally).
Where you come in.
We're looking for your support to help bring the game to many more people. We have a beautiful card design thanks to our talented illustrator, Francisco Galárraga, which we intend to take to the next level. With Kickstarter, and you, we hope many more people will be able to enjoy the game.
We had some prototypes made, using a manufacturer that was great. But to get it to more people we need to do two things: get a better quality product made and order a larger quantity to keep the costs down.
By pledging you'll be one of the first to own 'Game of Phones'.
We're producing a beautiful large format poster of the card back design, printed with gold metallic ink.
What's more, we'll produce up to 25 limited edition laser-etched cherry wood boxes, hand-made here in Brooklyn.
We're also selling a handful of our prototype 50-card decks, which we'll ship as soon as the Kickstarter is over (with the final game to follow).
We're working hard to make the game content better and better. We'd love to hear ideas and feedback, particularly from the Kickstarter community. Feel free to send us your thoughts.
Thanks so much for your interest.
Risks and challenges
As with any product, there could be issues with manufacturing and shipping. We'll be using people we trust to print the cards, and we'll be doing a test order before placing the big one to be absolutely sure the cards are up to our standards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
