About

Bringing back the mood and quality of your childhood’s favorite animated films, this game is a 2D game of skill, set in the Middle Ages with several surprises and modern elements built in.     

The main character, the eponymous Sir Plump, is a clumsy character with a big heart and an even bigger belly! Throughout the game, Sir Plump wants to save his love, Princess Selfie, who has been captured by an evil witch. While Sir Plump rushes towards the castle where his love is held hostage, he always makes sure to support those in need when he meets them on his journey.

The game features a lot of humor and even some irony and also comically reflects several modern-day problems, so you’ll be able to connect with this cartoon world’s tongue-in-cheek fun. 

We started by studying everything we could about the Middle Ages, from encyclopedias, history books, and even frescos from that era. The world we’ve created is incredibly detailed and picturesque and it’s filled with loads of characters and creatures. From the forests to the mines via the medieval town, you will see everything our created world has to offer.   

New Orc, the city where the game begins, is a magical place. It not only describes the fantastic creatures there, but while this medieval fairyland is full of the most incredible enchanted beasts, there are also some modern-day gadgets and tools run by wizardry. 

New Orc has a huge capital where Princess Selfie and her father, the king, lives and rules. An endless mythical forest lies beyond the gates of the city with ancient secrets hiding inside it. The story leads us through unimaginable adventures, deadly enemies and traps, surprising players with its twists and turns. 

Explore this astounding country, surpass the savage terrain whilst selflessly helping those in need, then find out what truly lies behind the great misfortunes that have recently been disturbing the peace in this prosperous kingdom.  

The first thing we wanted to get right was our main character, Sir Plump. We found a fantastic cartoon studio called UMATIK and had them create several characters. After working with their creative team, our Sir Plump was born. We went through lots of concepts, numerous different characters and a long process of fine-tuning before we chose our Sir Plump from a short list of 8 possibilities. We’re really happy with how he ended up. 

Taking Sir Plump as our starting point visually, we designed the rest of our characters and some of the monsters with him as our inspiration. We let our imagination run wild and ended up with some amazingly funny and cute creatures

Bringing each character to life has given us great joy. We’ve gone to great lengths to get them to move the right way and to perfect the cartoon gameplay we wanted.  We don’t have a favorite and can’t wait for you to meet them all and notice all the tiny details we worked on to make these creatures unique. We think you’re going to fall in love with them all!Expect twists and turns aplenty, a damsel-in-distress, a brave hero, an evil witch, and much, much more. We’ve got surprises up our sleeve for even the most hardcore fans!

SIR PLUMP

Never judge a book by its cover. Sir Plump is the hero of our story. Yes, he may be a tiny bit clumsy and have a pot belly, but he also has a heart of gold! Sir Plump’s mission is to save the kingdom from the most evil forces and win the heart of the charming and beautiful Princess Selfie. He is brave as a lion, and he offers his loyal services with a big smile while respecting the Knights’ Code of Chivalry most of all. He will not rest until Good finally overcomes Evil and all the innocent souls of New Orc are safe from harm.

PRINCESS SELFIE 

Princess Selfie is the classic damsel in distress. She is an outstanding beauty and the only daughter of her father, the widowed King of New Orc. As an only child and her warm-hearted father’s only ray of sunshine, she may be a little spoiled. That’s why she became…well…kind of self-centered. Being busy making selfies with her magical phone all the time, she has no interest in running her father’s prosperous kingdom. So, the good king is now looking for an heir who is fit to take care of his beloved subjects.

SIR SELFISH 

Sir Selfish is someone you definitely don’t want to cross is any way. He might be charming and good looking, but don’t let him fool you! Deep in his heart he is just a backstabbing, dishonest fraud. No trick is too dirty for him. He looks for nothing but wealth. Lacking of any true skills, he brags about achievements he could have never earned on his own. He manipulates and uses everyone for nothing but his self-interests. If Sir Plump should fail, it is unbearable to think about Selfish becoming the new ruler of the kingdom… 

As teenagers of the 90’s, we all loved to play those Disney platform games like Aladdin, Lion King, and Mickey Mania. They were easy to pick up, had a strong Disney charm, yet presented some old-school challenge even for the most avid platformer fans.We would like to re-create this experience with detailed 2D animations and a hand drawn Fairy Tale world following the footsteps of Disney animated films. 

To bring the kingdom alive, we are creating heavily animated segments like we find in a Dragon’s Lair but as a side-scrolling platformer.Looking for deep enemy design, our goal is to make the malevolent critters in Sir Plump’s way just as lively and interesting as our main character. They react to the environment, Sir Plump’s actions and even to each other in unexpected, hilarious ways.Most monsters can be dispatched easily by one of Sir Plump’s basic actions: jump, sword slash or ground pound. But each beast has unique states that can be activated by the other two actions (like jumping on a monster that needs to be ground pounded or hitting a monster that’s weakness is jumping, etc.). 

(Test in Unity - not final version)These states include: useful (by using them as platform, jump pad or projectile), terrifying (the foe becomes more aggressive, change its look and behavior, merge with another foe) or simply hilarious (sometimes they just want to give a big hug to Sir Plump.)We are going to use this variety of enemy behaviors to create scenes that can be solved in multiple ways. Some solutions will be rewarded more than others. To max out the game players need to find the best combination of actions for each scene.

THE ART

At GAMELAB, we LOVE cartoons, and it shows in everything we do. Sir Plump is no different. Visually beautiful, we’ve even drawn inspiration from some of our favorite animations.   

We all have been astonished by and think nostalgically about the beauty and fascinating mood of the films of the Disney Renaissance that began in the early 90’s. Each movie added an extra world to our own offering the opportunity to forget about dull weekdays and enabled us to concentrate fully on a story with exciting characters and an adventurous plot. The stories were mostly based on archetypes and the plot was always a portrait of someone getting over their flaws—we can all relate to them at any age, in any part of the world. For kids watching Aladdin, it meant a magical escape from reality, the poor winning it all. The Lion King gave an idea of what community should be, The Beauty and the Beast proved that with love everything is possible. But how does it work? The perfect harmony of their story, art and music served the message they were intending: The Good overcomes Evil after all. And somehow cartoons seemed to be more real than life itself. We believe them because we want the world to become a better place. 

Ever since they came out we kind of expected the same quality of animation and level of fun factor to return in video games, but technology needed quite a time to catch up with the demand.Finally, we have good news for all fans of Disney family animations! 

We are now able to produce the well-known, beautiful, classic animation quality AND also provide a gripping gameplay with runner scenes in our new 2D platformer!  

While setting the main features of Sir Plump, we all agreed that our aim was to bring back the greatness of the classics to the gaming world. Therefore, all art, plot and music had to serve the game by creating unity, in a Medieval setting with a touch of satirical parody.

THE PROCESS OF VISUAL DESIGN AND ANIMATION

Story told by UMATIK We simply loved the idea of building a story around an imperfect character. Sir Plump was love at first “sight”. His chivalrous attitude and often infantile manner of solving problems make his personality a never-ending source of fun and excitement. We think gamers are happier to control a protagonist with whom they have to work harder for the result. This way they take success more as their own.  

We grew up on fantastic videogames, cartoons and feature films that carried important messages and they became the best source of inspiration. When it comes to character design we prefer innovation over tradition and instead of repeating the same patterns over and over again we always integrate unusual and unexpected features into the character. Balancing the characters this way makes them seem vivid and genuine

Challenges? In a hand drawn world every little detail is a challenge! But thanks to our many years of experience in the field, we had no difficulties applying such technique. All we had to add was a few hundreds of hours of drawing and a bunch of different remedies to treat our hands in pain. Of course, there’s no doubt it was all worth it!   

Planning and creating the visual design of the characters and the environment of the levels took about two months’ work to complete. Our favorite character? It’s hard to pick one, because we love them all, but besides Sir Plump maybe we could call the skeleton-parrot and the tiny combat dragon our favorites!

We had a great team of seven in this project, working on the characters, the levels and the intro. During the project we used a wide selection of different tools. Besides our own fingers and Adobe products, we used Moho, Spine, and Blender for 3D assets.

MUSIC AND SOUND

We created soundscapes and recorded and mastered all the sounds ourselves to make things extra special. Even the music was done in-house, and we used medieval and modern instruments to get things to mesh perfectly with the style of the game. 

It’s real musical time travel! Our aim is to enchant our gamers and give you the experience of actually being in New Orc and its surroundings, let it be the mysterious and soft sounds to indicate the dark forest or a dashing march from the scene of the tournament.  

We’re Gamelab, an independent game developer studio based in Budapest that creates unique, hand-drawn games. We’ve been around for 4 years, and there are almost two dozen in our team. We specialize in meshing analogue and digital techniques to produce exciting and atmospheric worlds. 

Our first real success was Wormster Dash, a black-and-white game illustrated by hand on paper. You might have come across it in the App Store, where it was recognized as Game of the Day, Art in Motion and also one of the Best New Games and recently it was nominated at the Central & Eastern European Game Awards. More importantly, those who played it absolutely loved it! The feedback was totally positive. 

AUTI FRIENDLY, A GOOD CAUSE

We at Gamelab believe that knowledge should also be used to serve good causes. Besides developing entertaining games, last year we embraced a project called Auti Friendly. The project team develops autism-friendly games and tools that focus on the needs of autistic people. By building on their strengths and developing different functioning skills, autistic people have a better chance to live a more enjoyable, more independent life. 

As you can probably guess, developing a game is definitely fun, but it’s also expensive, which is why we’d like to ask for your help in completing the grandiose cartoon-like world we’ve dreamed up. Risks and challenges

This is a heart and soul project by developers who have worked in the industry for years, and really just wanted to make a game that tells the story that we wanted to tell. The greatest risk to us is not being able to deliver the game on time that is to the high standards of quality to which we all hold ourselves.

As you probably know, the most common risk in a Kickstarter campaign to not reach our funding goal. Since we posted our first art-works and concept-drawings to social media, our community has grown steadily. In the last few months we just got tons of positive feedbacks and supports from our fans.

However there are lots of other challenges during game development, especially if it's a hand drawn game! In a hand drawn world every little detail is a challenge!

But thanks to our many years of experience in the field, we are able to apply such technique. Time management is also a key feature, and the core mechanisms have to be well designed. This is why we’ll be testing the game extensively with others both locally and in distributed beta builds. Most of our pledges contain the access to the beta, and we're really looking forward to your feedbacks and suggestions.
