What are GameChips ?

As many experienced gamers have discovered, a set of pokers chips is one of the best accessories you can get to enhance your game sessions.

The goal of this project is to produce a set of poker chips that are designed with the tabletop gamer in mind.  Our design eliminates the shortcomings of 'regular' poker chips.

GameChips will be manufactured using the same high quality ceramic blanks that are used in many casinos.  While the chips are designed to meet the needs of the tabletop gamer, they are also great for your occassional poker night - if you're into that sort of thing.

Will these amazing chips be offered for sale after the Kickstarter? Yes and No. Our current plan is to place an order large enough to fulfill our Kickstarter rewards and a small amount of inventory. Once that inventory is sold, we will likely not reorder until we have a chance to place another order large enough to achieve volume discounts.

Here's a video review from Lance Myxter, the Undead Viking.

Expensive?

Since GameKnight began offering chips back in 2012, one of the most common initial reactions from potential customers is that the chips seem expensive. This is true if you are comparing our chips against the sets you find at most retailers.  But once you do some investigation, you'll discover that our chips are priced very competitively with other high quality chip sets on the market.

Since most sets are pre-packaged, you often end up paying for denominations that you may not want, or need.  With GameChips, you can choose one of our recommended set configurations, or pick and choose a mix of chips that is perfect for your needs.

Finally, If you consider the cost of GameChips versus making your own custom set that are tailored to board gaming, you'll find that GameChips are significantly cheaper.

Why do I need a set?

While no one "needs" a set of GameChips, we believe our chips are among the best accessories you can buy to improve your game nights.  Just as many gamers have realized the benefits of a table designed for gaming, a set of chips is another way to make your game time more enjoyable.

Many games use some form of currency as a core element of game play. Sadly, the components used to track currency are almost always sub-par.

Games generally use one of the following for currency:

  • Cardboard tokens: Usually you need to punch these out yourself. They get worn out pretty fast, and sometimes they get torn when you are trying to punch them.
  • Paper money: This is probably the worst type of game currency. It sticks together, rips, and is irritating to make change with.
  • Plastic chips: Better than paper or cardboard, but frequently are thin and difficult to stack or pick-up.
  • Metal coins & tokens: Much better than paper or cardboard, but usually are too small (penny or dime sized) making them awkward to handle or stack. Many lack a printed denomination. Also, metal is slippery and hard to use.

Long ago, casinos discovered the ideal solution. They realized that the best proxy for currency is a poker chip.

While 'regular' poker chips are ok, they are not without shortcomings when used for tabletop gaming.

  • They don't have the right mix denominations for tabletop games. Most standard poker sets only have 5 denominations.
  • Many designs lack printed denominations - forcing players to remember which design is associated with each denomination.
  • Virtually all poker chips have designs that include card suits and dice that just don't have the right aesthetic for tabletop games.  Except, of course, if your gaming is limited to games like Lords of Vegas, then the casino look is perfect.

Our Solution:

With a set of GameChips you can avoid many of the shortcomings of regular poker chips, and have a set that truly has been designed for you, the tabletop gamer.

As you can see below, consider how much easier and more enjoyable your next game of Puerto Rico will be with a set of GameChips instead of those thin cardboard tokens.

While metal tokens have great aesthetic appeal, they are pretty hard to handle. With the exception of very expensive large tokens, they tend to be small in diameter, not very thick, and quite slippery.  Notice the huge difference in size when comparing GameChips to metal tokens from one of the Dominion sets.

Our Design:

We wanted to create a set of chips that have a classic visual appeal. A look that will fit perfectly with tabletop games.

We also wanted to ensure that we made the denominations very easy to read.  We chose to use light color numerals on a dark background to maximize contrast.

In terms of color, it was challenging to find 15 different colors that would provide the right level of visual separation.  We chose to use bright colors that would stand out on the table.

We struggled for a bit on the edge design.  While we love the idea of solid color edges, we tested this out and found that without edge stripes, it was hard to differentiate chips from a distance.  We designed the edges to incorporate a progressive edge stripe design.  While the stripes are not a 'code', the number of stripes increases based on the number of digits that the chip represents.

NOTE: A quick update on the edge design - we are modifying the edge design on the '5' denomination to use a black edge spot (instead of yellow) as we found it was causing a bit too much of a bleed.   Therefore the chips will have the following edge strip design.

Updated edge strip for the '5' denomination

Our design includes 15 different denominations that we have found to be the most useful in tabletop games.

Set Configuration:

If you don't feel like customizing your set, these are the selections you will receive based on each reward level.  After the campaign ends, you will receive a survey which will ask if you would prefer the recommended set configuration (shown below), or if you would like to choose how many of each denomination to make up your set.

I've found the 400 chip set to be ideal for most situations. With 50 1's and a good mix of the other denominations, it's ready for just about any game.

The "no surprises" section

One of my pet peeves is to receive an item and find out that it falls short of my expectations. In this section I will try to give you as much information as I can, so that when you receive your chips, they will be exactly what you expected.

The manufacturing process

A bit about the process that is used to 'print' the images on to blank poker  chips.  The artwork on the chips is 'embedded' into the surface of the chip using a process called dye sublimation.  Basically, a chip's artwork is printed on special paper that can hold the ink.  Using a heated press, the ink is heated to the point where it turns into a gas, which is absorbed into the chip's surface.

This upside of this process is that the image won't wear off, or peel off like a label since the ink is deep into the surface of the chip.

The downside is that it is a very manual process that will result in some variation across the chips.  While these variations are minor, it's important to understand that it is normal and should be expected.

Color Bleed - Some times, there can be a bit of bleed from the face image to the edges. This is quite minimal, but might be noticeable on chips that have a dark and light color meeting on the rolling edge.

Dimples - Another thing to note is that ceramic poker chips have a small dimple on the rolling edge of each chip. This is part of the manufacturing process.

Centering - Another possible variation is the centering of the artwork. Since all custom chips are aligned by hand during the manufacturing process, they can occasionally be very slightly off-center.

To minimize the occurrence of these variations, we have chosen to use a very reputable chip manufacturer based in the United States.

The chips will be created using a high density solid composition material. While the chips are commonly known as ceramic, they are actually made by injection molding of a special plastic\resin compound.

Size - standard poker chip size: 39mm in diameter and are approximately 3.3 mm thick and will weigh about 10 grams each.

Color - The colors on your computer screen may appear a bit more vivid than the actual chips. This is true when comparing just about any physical object to an image on a screen.

During normal play, you probably won't notice these minor variations.

About Us

GameKnight Products Inc. is a small business that is focused on delivering products and services for tabletop gaming. Our website (www.gameknight.com) offers a wide range of strategy guides, reviews, and news articles of interest to gamers.

Last year we created this short video that explains some more info on why we got started.

Our Kickstarter history:

This is our 5th Kickstarter project.

Here's some of the backer feedback that we received:

  • Great product. One of the few kickstater projects that I feel satisfied with.
  •  Got my package Tuesday, I love how they have a nice heavy feel to them. Thanks Dave!
  •  Got my chips on Friday and very impressed with the quality. They are beautiful! Thanks.

Risks and challenges

This being our fifth Kickstarter project, we are experienced in both managing the project and delivering rewards.

Our largest risk is ensuring our manufacturing partner will provide the chips on time and with a high level of quality.

We believe that the vendor we have selected has a strong track record of delivering high quality product on time. Prior to this project, we have used this vendor for thousands of chips without any issues.

Since custom poker chips require several manual steps, there is the possibility that a backer will find some chips that have minor variations - see the "no surprises" section for more information this.

As with anything in life, there is always the chance for unforeseen issues, but we are confident that we have done the proper planning to mitigate the risks and can deliver this project as we have done with the past 4 projects.
