GameCritter is a unique gamified social mega-platform that connects gamers worldwide, Providing an unparalleled ecosystem for gamers, publishers and developers. Currently, there are approximately 1.1 billion gamers who use a variety of social services online. Yet, there is no one-stop platform to cater all of their needs. The purpose of GameCritter is to create a free social mega-platform that connects gamers worldwide.

GameCritter is certainly more than just a passion project. Over the years, we've taken a look at the industry as a whole and noticed that gamers make up a huge sum of the world's population – yet there's no dedicated platform for Gamers, Publishers and Developers (and we're not just talking PC players here. We're talking PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and Mobile Gamers too).

Why is GameCritter different from say, Steam or Raptr?

Our project will be focused, not just for PC gamers, but to act as the social hub for all gamers worldwide. We wish to build this platform to cater to gamers with:

  • Social Platform with User Posts, Friends, Instant messaging &
  • Commenting Community-Driven Reviews, Guides, Discussion 
  • Forums & Question/Answer Forums Addictive Levelling & Rewards 
  • System with over 1,500+ Levels & 13 Ranks Hundreds of Unique 
  • Collectable Avatars, Companions, Badges & Achievements 
  • Competitive Leaderboards with Various Metrics and Clans (Grouping)

This is just a small list of the type of features we're going to implement into GameCritter. We want to focus on community-driven decision making through polls and surveys from our users to include transparency and participation.  

How will this be beneficial to indie developers or publishers?

We want to cater this to indie developers and AAA publishers so that it truly is a one-stop shop for all parties involved by having:  

  • Dedicated Profile Pages to Build & Foster Fan Followings Raise 
  • Crowdfunding for New Projects with Support from Fans Create 
  • Revenue by Selling Games Directly from Our Platform Smart 
  • Targeted Advertising with Multiple Metrics Powerful Analytics 
  • Dashboard for Big Data Handling Conduct User Surveys & Polls to Gauge Strategic Business Direction

Despite there being many avenues for devs and publishers to make revenue through our platform, we don't want to focus this platform on selling. We want this to be a comfortable environment for gamers where they don't feel that they're flustered with ads.


How are you going to prevent the toxicity that comes with connecting all types of gamers?

We strive to create a positive environment that will advocate professionalism and minimal toxicity. We will be relying on our community to help report inappropriate conduct, and we'll be constantly researching/implementing new ways to keep this platform as constructive as possible without any agendas or bias.

We're only human, so problems will occur, but we will do our very best to solve them as they appear, and we'll be nurturing a community that's driven on ethical principles to advocate this positive environment all throughout our platform.

FEATURES:

Community-Driven Aggregated Reviews  

We understand that gamers rely on unbiased and genuine reviews to help lead to better purchases. At GameCritter, we strive for community-driven reviews that are backed by an up-voting system to establish recommendations on video games.  

This system will encompass a smart-filter that will help combat against spam, astroturfing, profanity and trolling. We will rely on intelligent self-learning AI and our community to help sight any exploits, dishonest characters and loopholes in the system to ensure that we’re always improving.

Avatars, Companions & Consumables

Avatars will represent our user’s persona alongside their username on articles they’ve written, forum posts, leaderboards, competitions, clans and across the site in general.   

Companions, on the other hand, will only be visible on user profile pages. These companions are like pets or followers. They are a symbol of achievement, and also help users with grinding higher levels faster.  

This system is designed not only for our users to unlock hundreds of equipable exclusive avatars and companions, but also to discover each character’s unique lore, rarities and special effects.


Dynamic Levelling & Rewards System  

One of the things that makes a great role-playing game successful, is its use of a dynamic levelling system that optimises the values of risk vs reward.  

We have crafted an engaging levelling system that combines positive reinforcement feedback loops that creates a rewarding experience for our users.  

We have fashioned two major components to our levelling system: Prestige Levels (normal levels) and Esteem Ranks (tiered ranking system that’s in sync with Prestige Levels). Our users must gain experience points in order to level up. This can be accomplished by performing certain tasks, such as writing reviews, helping other users with answering questions in Q/A forums, receiving upvotes on posts, participating in clan activities and other uncumbersome activities.  

After our users have exceeded the baseline of 1500 Prestige Levels (Esteem Rank 13), they will then move onto our Infinity levels which last forever or until a new season reset.

 Clans (Grouping) System

Clans are designed to bring users together by allowing them to create and join groups, referred to as Clans. This Clan system will offer the ability for users to share videos and images, participate in discussions and also gain increased experience points while joined to a Clan (depending on the Clan level).

Clan members can help contribute to the Clan level by performing certain tasks such as participating in forums, writing reviews and answering questions. We are planning to incorporate a questing and bounties system in the later phases, coupled with in-depth storylines and Clan wars. 

Clans have few customisation options to begin with, such as designing the Clan Shield and selecting a cover image, however, in the future, we plan on increasing the customisation capabilities. We will be relying on our community to help guide the direction of the Clan system by voting in the community polls and answering our discussion threads.

The Team

Josiah is the CEO & Founder of GameCritter. He has an extensive background in the Video Games industry with over six years experience. He has written for gaming publications such as The Australia Times, and went on to operate GSR as CEO for over three years. He is currently studying his B.A. in Business Intelligence Systems & and has a DIP in Journalism. 

Luke is the CTO and Co-founder of GameCritter. He possesses a B.S in Computer Science, a B.A in Psychology, PgDIP in Education and is an Accredited Scrum Master. Luke has been a Teacher and Network Manager for the past 15 years. He has also been involved in setting up and running a number of online businesses, such as a successful Australian small business Crazy Catalogues.

Development Team & Funding  

Though our development team are outsourced, they are backed by many industry-renown partners, such as Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and more. With a team of over 200+ in four central locations, our dedicated developers are confident that they can get the job done (with previous experience building successful custom social platforms) in approximately 1300 hours (4-6 months) for Phase 1 and 2, using PHP7.1 with MySQL, along with JQuery and Angular.js.  

Awaiting our go-ahead, the development team have quoted us $50,000 (US) to complete phase one (MVP) and phase two (extras). That leaves a remaining $4000 (US) toward crowdfunding fees. Any extra money raised would go to phase three in the development which focuses on in-depth user experience with quest-lines, lore, improvements to our levelling system, new characters, items and item types.

Q. IF THE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN DOESN’T MEET ITS GOAL, WILL YOU TRY AGAIN?  

Yes, most certainly. We’re in this for the love, and we think that gamers worldwide deserve a platform as robust as this one. We are gamers ourselves and know that this type of platform will be extremely useful in many ways. In short, if the first campaign is unsuccessful, we will keep going or die trying.  

Q: HOW WILL THE SITE BE FUNDED AFTER THE CAMPAIGN? AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE EXCESS?  

We have multiple revenue streams to help GameCritter succeed post-launch. These revenue streams will be advertising, commission fees from developer crowdfunding, memberships and eShop sales etc. Any excess (profits) that we make will purely be injected back into GameCritter to fund new phases, upgrades and applications. We won’t be taking any of the excess until the website is fully developed with at-least 5-6 phases complete. The excess will then be paid into our salaries, hiring new staff and a significant portion will be donated to charities selected by our users from our voting polls.  

Q. WHAT KIND OF MODERATION WILL YOU HAVE TO FILTER SPAM AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF COMMUNITY SITES?

We are planning to create an automated filter system to prevent spam, slander, racism, profanity and hopefully astroturfing. However, we are gamers, so we know a lot of us like to swear/curse. So, we will be placing community votes in order for users to decide which words are acceptable, and even implement a checkbox in the user settings to turn profanity on and off. We will also be working on new ways to prevent astroturfing and filtering spam more accurately. We will also rely on our community with an in-built flag/reporting system to flag posts that have made their way through our system. We’re only human, so we will do our best to keep improving the moderation of GameCritter. 

Q. WHEN YOU SUCCESSFULLY SECURE ADEQUATE FUNDING FOR THE CAMPAIGN, WHEN WILL YOU LAUNCH THE SITE?

 We’ve been assured by our developers that it will take approximately four months for Phase 1 to be completed (as per our Service Level Agreement). As soon as we get close to our funding goal, we will put a deposit down for the development to start right away (even if the campaign is still going). This is to ensure that the MVP will be live sooner and we’ll be able to get a head-start on Phase 2. During these four months, we’ll be testing the website through iterations (SCRUM), making sure that it’s aligned with our high standards. Once it’s good to go, the developers will upload the website to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and manage it from there.  

Q. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO COMPETE WITH THE BIG SOCIAL MEDIA GIANTS?

At GameCritter, we are not aiming to compete against the “social media giants” as they’re not in the same industry as us. Sure, they offer social services to the entire populace, but not for gamers specifically. They would never go to the extent of being a dedicated platform for gamers, publishers, and developers only.

Q. HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM STEAM AND RAPTR?

It’s unfair to compare apples with oranges in this case. We provide a unique and robust platform that is like no other in the market. With Steam and Raptr, they emphasise on being platforms that offer digital distribution and the storing of video games on local devices. Although they offer social components and reviews, they focus on selling games, rather than offering a fully comprehensive platform that’s driven on user experience, with reviews, clans, levelling up, avatars, collectibles, and forums.

Q. IN TERMS OF THE FEATURES OFFERED, IT SEEMS THAT 55K IS RATHER AMBITIOUS TO PULL IT OFF. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PULL THIS OFF WITH SUCH A SMALL FUNDING GOAL?

For this crowdfunding goal, we’re going to be funding 2/6 phases. These two phases focus on implementing the core social features coupled with gamification, which will include our aggregated reviews system, forums, QandAs, Clans, Levelling, Avatars, Collectibles and much more! We have worked out a long-term partnership with our development team to deliver these two phases at a fraction of the cost, in exchange for a long-term agreement. For phases 3-6, we will endeavour to raise these funds in-house. These phases will be driven by our community feedback through our online polls hosted on our website.

Risks and challenges

At GameCritter, we're faced with unique, yet surmountable challenges that require a certain degree of skill, passion, timing, determination and support from our community.

Our experienced team have spent years in the industry. We understand the gaps, the underlying needs, desires and behaviours of the different types of gamers.

Yet we won't kid ourselves. Although successful with past projects, we understand that GameCritter is no easy task. We are dedicated to deliver a meaningful experience that will add value to the lives' of gamers worldwide, or we'll die trying.

Due to the nature of development, some costs may blow out, however with our carefully crafted planning, we will endeavour to maximise our website features in a cost-effective manner.
