Now that all our backers should have received Gugong, it's about time to reflect back on this campaign... (We know that there are still some issues to be solved for a handful of backers, but rest assure that we’ll continue until everyone is satisfied.)
Gugong was in the BoardGameGeek Hotness list from October until recently and has reached many 2018 top 10 lists of reviewers. And, even more important, the player ratings on BGG stay very high. With 2.5k player ratings on BGG, Gugong still scores 7.7! For us this proves that the many development hours that we invested in this project together with the designer, were really worth it. This is the way we want to keep going in the future, to really make a difference in a very competitive market.
For the first time we had the privilege to work with an acclaimed author. And I'll never forget that after the first playtests of Andreas Steding's prototype, we were very reserved in suggesting any adjustments to his design. But Andreas immediately set us at ease, stating that he'd be very disappointed in us as his publisher if we wouldn't have any remarks on his design. And that was the start of a wonderful cooperation and a very intense polishing process of this gem. Andreas' answers to our suggestions were always very straight to the point and every step was play tested thoroughly on both sides during a whole year. And then, when acclaimed illustrator Andreas Resch joined the process, even he started making comments on the gameplay, that were all taken into consideration. Only a few days before the launch of the Kickstarter campaign, Andreas Steding sincerely expressed his satisfaction about the end result. Before that, he had always carefully guarded his design with very skeptical remarks during every development step.
Anyway, we're very proud of the end result and its success, thanks to all of you. But we've also learned a lot of lessons during this campaign...
What many people didn't realize, is that until recently, our team only had 2 full-time employees, Rafäël and me, and 1 part-time freelancer, Seb. We could handle the campaign itself, but unfortunately a lot of people have noticed that we underestimated the fulfilment, and moreover the customer service of 5000 Kickstarter games worldwide and above that, 12000 standard versions for co-publishers and distributors. And besides Gugong we had 3 other Essen releases that needed our attention as well.
The period from October 2018 until January 2019 was truly a nightmare for us, because we couldn't keep everyone satisfied. It’s only since a month that we succeeded in shortening the very long waiting list in our customer service inbox. We apologize to everyone who had to wait too long.
One of the consequences was that we had to postpone our next Kickstarter campaign of Fuji Koro, which was planned for December 2018, to March the 25th, 2019 (Yes, that’s in 2 weeks!!). We just didn’t find the time to complete the development process and set up a new Kickstarter campaign.
But now I can proudly announce that Eefje and Wim joined our team! They started working for Game Brewer last week and will help us to improve our marketing, communication and logistics. We're confident that 4 full-timers and 1 part-timer will be enough for future campaigns to guarantee a much more fluent fulfilment process and a much faster customer service.
The second print of Gugong will be ready at the end of March, which means that a total of 26000 copies (21k retail and 5k deluxe) have been produced, of which about 20000 have been sold already.
And… Andreas Steding is working on an expansion! There’s still a huge demand for more Deluxe versions of Gugong. Chances are very high that we’ll re-launch Gugong Deluxe on Kickstarter with an expansion. It’s yet too early to decide about a date though.
