Designed for gamers, streamers, families, game stores and libraries, and anyone who loves playing games with others, Gameboard-1 merges physical and digital tabletop gaming to enhance your play and let everyone focus on what matters: having a great time!
Gameboard-1 is a technology device and a platform that will change the way we play games together -- a device to teach new players faster, digitize set-up and scorekeeping, access an unlimited-play game library and allow users to try new games before they buy... all while maintaining the crucial physicality between players and pieces!
- Patented Sense Screen — interact directly with real physical gaming pieces, any shape or size, as many as the board can fit, with or without batteries
- Smart pieces – read data directly from your game pieces (like D&D character stats!)
- Mobile control – control and interact with the board directly from your mobile device
- Four-hour battery – take your game on the road, then plug back in for non-stop play
- Wireless sync with other boards – automatically connect for a larger table
- Game library – buy and own individual games, or subscribe for everything!
Created uniquely for gamers, this gaming console is larger than an iPad, more interactive than a television, and easier to carry than your game shelf.
The Gameboard-1 is a beautiful 16” x 16” sense screen hardware device that is thin, lightweight, and portable.
From the beginning, our development process has focused on implementing functions that allow multiple styles of game play, alone or with others.
Our technology recognizes inputs from multiple sources simultaneously, from several fingers to a game piece that holds its position after being placed on the board.
Physical pieces can interact with the Gameboard-1 through id tags that store up to 2k of encrypted data including the location, orientation, and type of piece as well as user data, such as a character's hit points or experience. Ten (10) generic bases will be provided as part of rewards that include a Gameboard-1 unit. Games can also be played with purely digital pieces.
Our display refresh rate allows fast-paced gameplay with low latency, from multiple contact points, when using physical or digital objects.
We've also designed the Gameboard-1 to connect to your personal electronic device for private screen game play or augmented reality applications.
WIFI and Bluetooth integration allows personal electronic devices to create virtual interactions with the board environment, with or without internet access.
To increase screen real estate, the Gameboard-1 can even connect multiple gameboards for a multi-screen gaming experience, using NFC sensors and internal antenna arrays to make wireless connection seamless and fast.
Gorgeous hardware isn't enough. We're gamers and we know what we want: more games!
This campaign will help us finish building a single marketplace that will offer thousands of individual titles a la carte and an optional monthly subscription service for unlimited access to that vast library of games and gaming tools.
It's like Netflix for games, including everything from classics like chess and checkers to modern strategy games to interactive and original creations from partner game creators, with networked game play similar to PSN or Xbox Live.
We are building partnerships with some of the biggest names in the hobby and gaming industry to create a robust library... and we're excited to reveal more partners over the course of this campaign.
We want anyone to be able to bring their games to the platform. Our open developer SDK means that it is simple for developers to add and update their games in the ever-expanding games library. The Last Gameboard marketplace isn't restricted to board games. Developers can make any game or content they want: from purely digital board games to games that interact with physical pieces, cards, and dice in ways we haven't even imagined yet.
We don't take the term "Partners" lightly. We provide GitHub, Architect and Engineer access to help drive innovation and product roadmap. We are building a community. We are the community.
The Developer Edition includes everything you need to start creating your own games, programs, and innovations for this platform.
Gameboard-1 is beautifully designed from the inside out. It's a sleek console with real world game play informing every element of design.
We have our prototype in the lab right now and cannot wait to share the first unit from the manufacturer in the coming weeks!
Here are just some of the hardware features we plan to include with every Gameboard-1 unit we ship:
- The Gameboard-1 is designed with thin edges to maximize playable surface area, chemically strengthened glass and a plastic housing designed for durability.
- The 1920x1920 LCD display exceeds the specification for high-definition, so that every detail is crisp and clear.
- Plus, at only five pounds, the device remains lightweight and portable. The on-board battery allows up to four hours of game play, so the game can continue by candlelight if the power goes out.
- Two USB-C ports support not only peripheral devices, but with a USB-C to HDMI adapter you can output the contents of the screen to another device, making Gameboard-1 perfect for Twitch and YouTube streamers who want to embed or overlay the game within Wirecast or OBS.
- Play online with networked play, or download your game and enable the Gameboard-1 local WIFI network to connect private screens and peripherals when offline.
- Four speakers and microphones let sound become an integral part of your game play, while WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity makes syncing with your personal mobile device a breeze.
- An onboard 64 GB eMMC hard drive stores your key files locally, while a 64-bit CPU and 4GB of RAM keep everything running smoothly on our custom-built The Last Gameboard OS (TLGOS).
FAMILIES: From your living room to visiting grandparents, now your entire game library can travel with you. Enjoy a family game with the kids, then stay up late with the latest strategy game.
GAMERS: Thanks to full compatibility with D20Pro, now included in your subscription, gamemasters can direct the action with every tool available in a multi-player virtual tabletop... on a real tabletop! Interactive maps, combat management, and access to tabletop systems—from Dungeons & Dragons to Pathfinder and beyond—make Gameboard-1 a crucial part of your weekly campaign.
GAME STORES: Immediately demo many of the games on your shelves for customers, helping to increase sales, then bring out Gameboard-1 again for open game night. Game stores are all about community and The Last Gameboard helps you focus on creating the extraordinary experiences that keep bringing regulars back to the table.
STREAMERS: An essential tool for tabletop streamers, Gameboard-1 lets you bring the details straight to your online audience. Forget trying to set up an extra camera above the table and lighting the board properly: now you can display partial or full game AV output right inside your favorite streaming software, while you focus on the interactive play that your audience loves.
DEVELOPERS: Whether you're adapting your classic board game for TLGOS or creating an innovative new experience that merges tabletop with the unique capabilities of Gameboard-1, you're at the cutting edge of new technology, bringing games to a new generation of gamers.
We've designed Gameboard-1 with the following technical specifications that we intend to meet or exceed in manufacturing:
A successful Kickstarter is just the first step in the process of bringing the Gameboard-1 to your door!
Following the Kickstarter we will prepare and launch surveys on BackerKit, where you will be able to manage your pledge, update your shipping address, and where we will charge market prices for shipping and fulfillment. Please DO NOT add money for shipping during the Kickstarter, so that we can keep those costs as accurate as possible for each pledge level prior to shipping.
We are excited to use BackerKit for pledge management, where you will be able to select add-ons, update your shipping address, pay fair market prices for shipping, and track the status of your rewards.
The initial development of Gameboard-1 was funded thanks to a seed round of private capital, which allowed us to complete design of our prototype and finalize our manufacturing partnerships. Now we're bringing Gameboard-1 to Kickstarter to raise money to fund:
- Manufacturing Testing (including beta boards)
- The Manufacturing Run
- Gameboard-1 Case Development
With your help we'll be able to transition our product from prototype to retail-ready.
Most importantly, this limited-edition Kickstarter helps bring together the core community of gamers, streamers, and developers who will receive first access to the Gameboard-1.
About the Company
In 2018, avid hobby gamer Shail Mehta met with hardware guru Rob Wyatt over beer to discuss the fundamental flaw with touchscreen devices: why couldn’t any digital device recognize physical objects for varying shapes and sizes, especially the types of objects that are needed for hobby gaming.
Gameboard-1 was born out of the need to address the analog problems of hobby games while maintaining the essence of why gamers love to play. Gameboard-1 solves the problems of set-up/take down, learning/teaching new games, inability to explore games before buying, games that cannot be easily saved, finding someone to play with and much more.
In January 2019, The Last Gameboard, Inc., was formed. They began to establish relationships with game makers all around the world, incorporating both Unity & Unreal to bring the best hobby gaming content to TLG’s upcoming platform.
Shail Metha - CEO / Co-Founder
Shail has a passion for gaming. When she immigrated to the US in the 90s, Shail encountered a group of children in her apartment that were playing chutes and ladders. Shail, not knowing English, just began to play. The role of gameplay in creating community and fostering human connection has been central to Shail’s work at The Last Gameboard.
In her professional life, Shail has a financial background working for hedge funds and venture capital funds. She has consulted for the Nuclear Regulatory Committee, City University of New York, City & County of Denver ‘s projects, and Triunity Engineering. Has managed teams and executed projects throughout her career. Shail is the driving force for the vision and future for The Last Gameboard.
Rob Wyatt - CTO / Co-Founder
Rob moved from the UK to the US nearly 20 years ago. Known as the “Guru of Hardware” in the industry, Rob loves creating new technologies in gaming and is an avid skydiver. He was the system architect of Microsoft’s Xbox console and went on to work at Playstation, Atari and Magic Leap. Ron owns several patents in AR/VR including a patent on multiple app sparse pixel time warp in AR headsets and processing. He is a visionary, designer and maker of The Last Gameboard’s incredible technology.
Dustin Hatchett - Business Development
Dustin has been an avid gamer since he first played TSR’s Boot Hill and FASA’s Star Trek RPG in 1983. In his 25 years in the gaming industry, Dustin has managed multiple retail game stores in Denver, Colorado and owns a production company producing live action role-playing games and multiple game conventions. For the past 20 years, he has worked in technical and project management roles for large telecommunications companies.
Dustin will bring his extensive game industry knowledge and background in project management as co-owner of Rocky Mountain Games (a pre-visualization and development company) to The Last Gameboard as Business Development Coordinator.
Mike Horn - Advisor
Mike is a recent inductee into the Pop Culture Hall of Fame who grew up in the collectibles business. After college, his first job was as a buyer for Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest wholesaler of comic books and supplier to thousands of comics and hobby shops. His job was to line up and buy trading cards (initially) and later all licensed merchandise.
In 1994, he left Diamond to form his first company, Palisades Marketing. Originally a marketing consulting agency, he evolved it to become a leading manufacturer of licensed collectibles. By 2005, Mike had grown Palisades to nearly $7 Million in annual revenue with 20 full time employees. Afterwards, Mike formed SwagDog and Power Up Factory, two successful ventures in the collectibles industry, before returning to consulting with the formation of Golden Strategic Development in 2019.
Lys Galati - Marketing
Elysabeth “Lys” Galati was seven years old when she finished reading the leather-bound silver foil edition of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Still overwhelmed by the book, her mother asked “Lys, your math is getting better. Do you want to come up with the adults and play D&D?”. Nothing was the same after that. A simple game night became an origin story.
After a stint with Diamond Comics doing everything from customer service to buyer, Lys saw a gap in the industry. Lots of incredibly creative people who put their heart and soul into products who often didn’t have the time and (sometimes) skills to promote themselves properly. Sphinx Public Relations started in 2000 and has been an ongoing business ever since. The company was founded on the idea that all geek voices, regardless of budget, deserved a chance at the spotlight.

Risks and challenges
We will mitigate Risks and Challenges with:
An expert team with over 20 created projects and backing over 200!
This team has a full understanding what it takes to facilitate a great project and the expectations of backers to deliver.
No distractions; focused only getting our vision to market in 2020.
Our incredible engineer already has a working prototype in the lab; with a manufacturing prototype arriving before the US holidays.
Manufacturing delays will be mitigated because we intentionally limited this production run to 1000 units and have set up shipping goals (in waves) to accommodate workload.
We want this in people hands so they can enjoy it as soon as possible.
The subscription service will be robust; as we have already contracted a firm per our timeline above. We have other partners developing with us and we are contracting games to be on this platform before the launch so we can deliver a great experience, day one.
Any endeavor such as this can have snags, however transparency is built into this project with each backer tier providing access for the beta developers, user groups and our street team.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
