About this project
The Legend of the Cipher recalls the roots of hip hop culture; it's a game on the hip hop industry that facilitates rhyme practice in the tradition of ciphers and battles. Come explore the dynamic world of hip hop's music industry, absorb it's culture and develop your own rhyme skills.
We're in final beta testing after a year and a half of development, and we're seeking the support we need to provide original illustrations, build a website to serve players and MC's, and ensure that we can continue our project with the highest standards of quality.
This game will broaden your musical horizons; it will challenge you to think strategically, either become a Legend through business savvy, manifested in card-and-dice play, or neglect the cards at your peril, and hope your pretty face and rhyme skills will carry you. Yes, this game will dare you to rhyme, allow you to build your own decks so you can live out almost any fantasy hip hop music career we can imagine, all while teaching and refining skills that will prove invaluable in your day-to-day lives. Ultimately, since our game uses the real-world hip hop ecosystem as its foundation, our card compendium will gradually transform into a living, growing record of hip hop history, curated and maintained by its inheritors, not record labels.
By donating to this project, you will become the seeds of the community we hope to build around this game. The spores of a new cultural movement. Nothing like this exists. Your contribution, monetary or otherwise, will help us create something unprecedented. An entire LoC Universe (planet-orbiting LoC Mothership Tour included) in which you, our community, can flourish and create in ways, we assure you, you didn't think you could. We will become the strongest bridge between Hip Hop and Gaming Culture.

Kickstarter funds will go towards putting original art on all the cards, and will contribute to starting development on the LoC Arsenal, which will be our on-line card compendium. The beta is currently open to all contributors, all you need to do is send us your e-mail address, and you'll get access to the beta cards, so you can start building your first deck!

LOC is a race to 100 Hype and 100 Cash. Hype and Cash are accrued through successful Venue performances or business Ventures. The success of Venues and Ventures is determined by die roll... or by rhymes. But beware! If you choose to spit bars, opponents can challenge your performance to hijack your rewards.
Players build up Hype and Cash while defending their Rep. They must maintain at least 1 Rep, while trying to surpass 100 Hype and Cash, simultaneously, to become a Legend of the Cipher; one who has mastered both the art and the business of Hip Hop.
Allies are the MC's, DJ's, Divas etc. that you collaborate with throughout your career. Any Allies you sign to your project will increase the Level of that project, thereby allowing your Venue or Venture to win you more Hype.
Crew are the industry professionals that you employ. They provide the Hustle crucial to facilitating your projects. Examples of Crew include the promoters, lawyers, accountants, managers, publicists, etc. that support your career.
Venues are the projects that allow you to showcase your skills. Ventures are the business opportunities available to a hip hop entrepreneur, and operate identically to Venues, except they grant the extra benefit of staying on the table, and providing benefits over time. Both Venues and Ventures have a Hustle requirement, which is fulfilled by your Crew.
Moves are the idioms of hip hop culture. They operate as wild cards, thereby adding flavor to the game, and allowing players to, for example, sabotage other players' projects, defend against challenge, or dig through your Career deck for certain cards.
Shine cards are a semi-satirical expressions of your success,which you can leverage as liquid capitol for putting on projects, or whose abilities you may use to affect the game.
