EndCycle is an Action RPG, with a skill based combat system and a focus on letting the player develop their own combat style.
It also features a unique world with a rich background story and a plot that concentrates on the relationships between the characters in it.
In EndCycle you can progress through the world at your own pace, seeing as YOU can actively search, engage or avoid enemies at any time!
The discovery of infinite energy should've brought peace to the world of Anika. Instead it ruined it.
The few survivors of the terrible battles that were fought, over the energy source, decided to rebuild the world. Not with magical energy but with the electronic "Voxel Generator" devices which can reproduce temporary copies of any object at any time.
400 years later the world of Anika is one of hope and prosperity.
In this world you will visit 9 cities. Including:
Everod - An isolated town hidden in the snow.
Harosh - Prides itself with the legendary "Kevin" lake monster.
Astrat - Buried 360° city that finances itself with the time bending meteors, dropping on top of it.
Ambervale - A university that grew to the size of a city. Often referred to as the "Univercity."
... and other fascinating locations!
In Everod we find our protagonist: Fin
Fin's life is perfect: A quiet town, a loveable brother and a great girlfriend.
When all of that gets taken away by the eccentric organisation “Azure Shield”, Fins only hope is to find the popular team “Crimson Force”.
Azure Shield is looking for a way to revive the infinite energy source, trusting that humanity has reached a point where it can be effectively used.
Crimson Force dedicates themselves to stopping Azure Shield, fearing the dangers of the past.
Fin just wants to be with his family, but when he gets entangled in the conflict of these 2 world powers, he learns the most important lesson of his life... “Nothing lasts forever”
In EndCycle, you travel through the world of Anika, exploring, fighting, customizing your battle inventory and progressing through the story!
There are many different biomes and places to explore, each one featuring their own set of enemies called 'Noises', which you actively seek out and battle in order to complete missions and grow stronger! No meddlesome random encounters to stop you on your way!
Once you've defeated a Noise your Noisicon collects it's data and will help you out in future battles. Depending on how much data you have collected the device can tell you the weaknesses, the nature and the loot you can gather from those weird monsters.
During battle, you can move around freely on the orange allied panels and the grey neutral ones. As time progresses, a bar on the top of the screen will fill up, and as it does, you use it up again by attacking with your so-called "VOCs"!
You have 12 interchangeable VOCs in total, divided into three sets between which you can switch at any time point.
Once you win a battle you receive rewards and data.
Data can be either turned into money or experience points to level up!
Once you level up you can choose which part of the GEIST system you want to strengthen!
Depending on which part you choose, you gain new VOCs!
This way we want to avoid having the player concentrate on grinding to strengthen Fin, but instead have them train their skills and try different strategies to make it through the story!
This may sound like a lot when you read it, so we are encouraging you to try out our demo!
Once you've mastered the battle system it is time to challenge your friends in a Voxel Match or try yourself in a Noise Challenge together with up to 3 other players
Here's a preview of our main theme which can be heard at the title screen (composed by the amazing Miles 'Oddbahl' Hudson):
Sounds neat doesn't it? If you want to listen to more of EndCycle's soundtrack, check out our soundcloud!
Our team currently consists of 6 people, who are all working hard to bring the game to life:
The project's story, written from Daniels perspective
One day Gal decided to turn the 2D platform he dreamed of doing into a love letter to the Battle Network series
During a train ride he approached me and asked if I would be interested in writing the story for his game. His pitch went something like this: “An evil scientist wants to revive humans.”
During the next train ride the story took the form of: “A dude fights a rebel army… and they are terrorists… but they aren’t all that bad actually!”...Progress!
We decided to build the rest around that.
The only things that remained of Gals original game, were Fin and Cress.
They were to become the two protagonists of two separate “Combat World” (as it was called back then) games, each telling the story from a different perspective. By the time the game was called “A Tale Worth Remembering” the idea of 2 versions has already been scrapped.
While I was pumped about the story during meet-ups, Gal was enthusiastic about the game 24/7. He build the game from the ground up and developed the battle system almost completely by himself.
Here you can see how the game developed before it became what it is today
By the time our composer Miles joined the game was called "Voxel Generation" and was nothing like the original pitch.
Only a few months ago we all agreed to name the game "EndCycle".
3 members of our team (Make, Felix and Fergus) have left the project already, but heavily influenced the game.
Without them EndCycle wouldn't be what it is today.
It's been a long time for all of us
The game has changed like crazy in that time, our team has developed a lot and the whole ride has been a unique learning experience for all of us.
Heck we're still learning new things every day, and this is exactly what makes this project so exciting for all of us.
All funds will be pumped into the team, company expenses and legal fees.
Up until now, we have all worked with revenue share, meaning that we earn money when the project earns money.
This means that as long as the project isn't finished, we need to have a way to earn money on the side to finance
3 years of work have already gone into the game. We would like to treat our team fairly and pay them properly for the tremendous work they have done so far.
Every team member get's paid in a way that reflects how much the have already done for the project.
Specifically your money will flow into:
- More animations for Fin, the world, attacks, enemies and the
NPC's who fight alongside you
- The Memory Construct which will allow you to fight against every Noise which is 100% registered in your Noisicon, at any time
- More of Oddbahl's great soundtrack
- More sound FX
- The next 10 chapters of the story
- More Noises
- Boss battles!
- The noise (co-op) challenge mode, which will pose specific challenges and rewards!
- Multiplayer optimization
- More Vocs!
- More details in the overworld
Risks and challenges
Most of the risks regarding code and implementation were dealt with, when building the game engine using the LibGDX framework over the last 3 years. Currently the biggest challenge for us, is to maintain a steady workflow.
The main challenge we’ll face in the future is to maintain and improve the level of quality shown in the demo.
If the project doesn't get funded we won't drop it seeing as already 3 years of development have gone into it, but seeing as we all need to make a living on the side, development speed won't increase - meaning that the project won't be finished any time soon.
