Dawn of the Final Day: Turn x Thousand Arrows Crossover Playbooks!

We got twenty-four hours to go! And by the way … do you like animal shapeshifters and Apocalypse World-influenced games? Did you know Brie Sheldon's Turn, an ill RPG about animal shapeshifters in small towns, is also approaching its last twenty-four hours on Kickstarter?

Well, guess what? If you back both Thousand Arrows and Turn—like, even for a dollar each, whatever—I'll give you a special set of crossover playbooks. One is the Faerie Lands allegiance for Thousand Arrows, which allows you to play a fey immortal or shapeshifting creature from the Japanese backcountry. Are you a tengu bird-goblin, a mischievous raccoon-dog, or a human changeling whisked away to the forest darkness or the dragon palaces at the bottom of the sea? Will you serve the Great Goblins of the Mountains' capricious whims, or give in to your fascination with the human world? You'll also get a hengeyōkai-themed playbook (fox, crab, turtle, or raccoon dog—which would you most want to see?) for Turn which brings Japanese mythology to your small town!

Come get it now, because after the Kickstarters end, you'll have to text me a photo of you physically handing a dollar to Brie or something to get these playbooks! This special, limited-time offer brought to you by all the coffee Mendez drank today on the way to PAX Unplugged.

Direlda, Dragon King's Gambit will definitely describe some of those vulpine distinctions, although fox PCs from all regions will still have the freedom to characterize themselves as beneficent, malevolent, or anywhere in between. I sometimes find foxes tricky to portray because of their interaction with gender stereotypes, but I've been blessed with a series of fox players who navigated those tropes with respect and grace and I'm hopeful I can represent what they've done right.

Well I was interested in both of these but had to have a friend remind me to back both. Thank you for getting them so hyped about both that I was reminded and am happy to play both.

While I would love to see a fox beast archetype in Turn, I think that if the goal is to bring Japanese mythology to Turn, then the racoon dog is the better choice. The raccoon dog's native habitat is limited to eastern Asia with the Japanese raccoon dog being the subspecies/species native to the Japanese islands. The native habitats of the "true foxes" (aka the genus vulpes) cover Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America with the red fox's native habitat being the most widespread with a presence in each of those continents. Thus, red foxes show up in the folklore of a wider range of cultures and is seen as a trickster and/or shapeshifter in many of those folklores. So while both tanuki and kitsune are important and prevalent animals in Japanese folklore, the tanuki deserves this opportunity to be more widely represented. Also, raccoon dogs are one of the few canines that can climb trees (the other canine I know about that does that is the grey fox), which is pretty cool.

Also, I would like to express my gratitude at your inclusion of a fox playbook in Thousand Arrows. It's not like most of my RPG characters are foxes of some sort... With the unlocking of The Dragon King's Gambit will you be providing material on how the portrayal of supernatural foxes is similar and different in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese folklore as an aid to players who want to be a Chinese or Korean fox, for instance? I know that the gumiho are often portrayed as evil and much more malicious than kitsune/kyuubi (though I am aware that there is debate on when the more neutral/positive protrayals of the gumiho were ousted and that it may be a much more modern change), but am not really familiar with the folklore concerning the huli jing/jiuweihu.

Pledging momentarily for Turn. My vote is for tanuki. Kitsune are discussed everywhere, and the tanuki needs more understanding.

Oh, and for the hengeyōkai-themed playbook? I know kitsune will likely win the popularity contest, and I sure love them, but I want to put in a vote for tanuki.

Both of these were "just take my money" ones. How do we prove -- (checks comments, see that's been covered) -- ah, okay, cool. (goes back to pretending to be productive)
