Mesdames et Messieurs,
I would like to present to you my new project album - Across the Bridge.
Belgian-born London based jazz singer known for my Parisian Jazz & Tango project presenting a unique take on French classics, Jazz standards & Tango tunes, I am now recording original material to form my third studio album.
NEW ALBUM - Across the Bridge
This year I've decided to go deeper in songwriting and share from a more personal place, songs that not only thrill me with rich harmonies and flavoured rhythms, but also with messages dear to me that I wanted to share.
I have written all of the songs on this third album and collaborate with a couple of wonderful lyricists. Each of the songs have been created from a special moment, feeling or story that has touched me - personal experiences, doubts, joy, loneliness, the beauty and peace of nature and silence, a place where I let go, this is often where I hear the melody underneath it all.
The musicians in the band and playing on this album are Nicolas Meier on guitar, Richard Jones on violin, Nick Kacal on double bass, Saleem Raman on drums and also a couple of guest musicians who will join us on 2 songs.
WHY AM I LAUNCHING THIS CAMPAIGN AND ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT?
I decided to run this campaign for two main reasons. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the experience of making an album - the different steps to follow and the joy of witnessing all the steps until realisation. Some of you have followed me for a while and your support, emails, and kind words after gigs have helped me keep going on this artistic journey and I really would like to thank you for that.
The second reason is because I wanted to spread this message which has been a stepping stone in my own artistic exploration: ‘Do not die with the music still in you’. We all have a music in us, we all have a creation that wants to be revealed and I wish you all to discover, treasure it and bring it out into the world.
Most of the recording has now been done, however to release an album there are many more actions to undertake. Coming up next is some extra recording, some editing, the mixing and the mastering from the musical side. There is also a visual and physical side which is the CD artwork/design and the CD manufacturing. The last step, which I know from experience to be crucial is the PR Campaign. In order for this album to be heard throughout the world it needs Radio and Press which would give the music an opportunity to be heard in places impossible for me to reach on my own.
As an independent artist, these expenses are very difficult for me to cover without your help. This is why I decided to reach out to you via the Kickstarter platform. I believe that together, we can make this happen.
I would like to ask for your kind support by choosing one of the donation packages - whichever inspires you. I am so completely grateful for your support and will always know when looking at the album that it exists thanks to your help and your belief in this music.
The money raised on this Kickstarter campaign will allow me to cover all the costs left to finish the album which is equivalent to £6300. This amount includes: some remaining recording at the studio (some vocals, kamalengoni -kora instrument and guest musicians on 2 tracks), editing, engineer and producers fees, mixing, mastering, manufacturing, CD artwork and PR. Here is the breakdown of the costs:
£600 - remaining recordings, £750 - editing, engineer and producer's fees, £1400 - mixing, £600 - mastering, £300 - CD artwork, £1200 - CD manufacturing, £1000 - PR, £450 - kickstarter fee
A BIT MORE ABOUT ME
Looking back, I have been very lucky. I was born into a family where quality music was played everyday in a picturesque village in the Condroz, south of Belgium. My sisters and I were always encouraged to follow whatever passion was living within us. It’s perhaps a little surprising then that I chose to study for a masters in Economics. One day, observing how that gibberish language was driving me insane, my mum objected ‘why aren’t you doing music instead, this is so natural to you’ - she obviously knew better. I eventually came to my senses and hearts call and realised that a conventional, secure and slightly predictable path wasn’t going to be mine and so the adventure began…
After joining the top 10 finalists of the French Pop Idol (TV program), discovering the highs of spotlight, huge stages, TV plateaux, ‘fame’ and downs of fitting in a box and ‘doing what you are told’, my passion for music rotated in a new direction. I moved to London, studied at the Guildhall and started my project ‘Parisian Jazz & Tango’. I met Nick Meier, a wonderful guitar virtuoso (who has toured with Jeff Beck), and has helped me from the beginning. I recorded 2 albums that are now released in UK & Japan. ‘J’ai deux amours’, a collection of my favourites jazz standards and ‘Notes from Paris’ - my version of classics Chansons Francaises, songs I grew up with and rediscovered with my moulded jazz ears. The albums have had widespread airplay and we toured the UK several times, playing at wonderful venues including sold out shows at the London Jazz Festival twice and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. I also guested at the Royal Festival Hall with Aurora Orchestra some years back.
Singing these timeless, iconic, masterpiece songs has been wonderful, especially for those moments when people come after the performance saying ‘Thank you, tonight you transported me to Paris’.
Thank you for reading, for watching, for supporting and for sharing. Thank you for believing in this project and what I hope to accomplish. This is a Live project happening right now and so I look forward to updating you on the progress of this campaign via Kickstarter, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. If you would like to help me spread the word, please share this link to friends and family.
'ACROSS THE BRIDGE' SONGWRITING NOTES
'Ride' is coming from a hike in Yosemite on my California trip, the freedom and limitless feeling that can arise when surrounded by mountains. 'Like a Bridge' came from a dream, I sat down on the piano and the melody flowed by itself through my fingers. I find fascinating the way people choose to look at things, there are 2 sides to a coin, and so 'Les roses et leurs epines' (The roses and the thorns) came to life. Doubts in a life of an artist can pretty much be an every other day syndrome, 'Is This It' came one of those days. 'Jatiluwih' represents the simplicity and peace of life I envied from Balinese culture when I explored Bali. The story of 'Forest Boy' evokes freedom childhood memories, the candide naivity, playing in a fantasy world where nature prevails which lead to 'The Time is Now', a call to defend the wonders of our Planet.
Risks and challenges
Releasing an album is a risky business but I feel lucky that I've been able to go through this process several times and am confident that everything will come together exactly how I envision.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
