A Retro Sci-Fi Puzzle Platformer for PC, Mac, and Linux.
About this project
Depending on what you want to do, some objects are a better fit than others.
The heavier the objects you clone, the more damage they will do. However, the Clone Gun you start with will not yet be at its full potential. As you progress, you will be able to upgrade it. For instance, maximum clone count, clone lifetime, clone fire rate, scanner power, and cloner power are all stats that you will be able to upgrade.
One thing we are really excited about are the unlockable arcade machines that are hidden through the game. A total of 6 machines will be available for you to find and play. If you manage to beat the highscores, upgrades will be made to your Clone Gun.
In a distant future, the Earth has lost most of its conditions to enable life, therefore forcing the remaining survivors to leave the planet in search of a new one. Some hundreds of years later, a handful of scientists, calling themselves Genuine Systems, return to Earth with a cell regeneration technology. Their goal is to restore the planet to its previous flourishing state.
You play Logan Blake, a Resource Allocation Manager working for Genuine Systems. Your job is to help grow the actual human settlement on Earth.
Despite your great reputation and attention to detail, you make a costly mistake that sends you on a mission. You must infiltrate Bootleg Systems, the enemy base, and recover the stolen shipment. In the midst of your task, you discover that they are developing a ground-breaking technology: the Clone Gun.
We are teaming up with the exceptionally talented synthwave artists Dream Fiend and Killstarr, collaborating together as Starbound.
With their help, custom music will be created for the game. And when we say custom, we mean it: just like the visual assets, all the music and sound effects will be handcrafted specifically for this game. Music will be a core component of Bootleg Systems, and so we want you to be able to enjoy your favorite synthwave tracks in the Sandbox mode at any time. These Sandbox mode features will be unlocked once you get the BoomBox (a.k.a. Ghetto Blaster) in the story mode.
Each level will feature an original track, as well as a hidden cassette tape containing the level theme. Once you find one, it will become available in your BoomBox. Whenever you play in the Sandbox mode, you’ll be able to create your own playlists.
The track used in this Kickstarter campaign video is Lockdown by Dream Fiend. You can find the track on Bandcamp here.
The core team members behind the Bootleg Systems game are:
Gabriel De Roy: Game Director, Manager, Designer, Programmer
Katherine Provost: Script Editor, Tester
Gabriel and Katherine both love video games, and they are thankful to have the opportunity to work on one right now. Despite having the passion and possessing all the knowledge necessary to create the game they are working on, sometimes a little help can make a big difference. Luckily, they can count on the support of their community to help them on their journey.
For this game, not a single dollar will be spent if it does not directly improves the quality of the finished product. We are not a big studio with many employees and expensive overhead costs. We are able to keep the costs low because we have a versatile team that work day and night to bring a polished game at a professional level of quality in your hands. We already know that we can make this game with this budget. Our real challenge is: how great can we make this game with the budget we’ll have.
Most of the funds will be used to hire artists, such as level designers, 3D animators, and voice actors in order to increase the quality of the game and reduce development time.
Everything that we consider a must-have for this game is already planned in the schedule. If, however, we happen to receive more funding, we believe the following nice-to-have features would definitely add-up to the game.
• $55,000 Trick shot Mode: Perform some impressive trick shots with your Clone Gun in a basketball-like shoot-clones-in-the-bucket fashion
• $60,000 Speedrun Mode: Replay some of your favourite levels in an arcade time-attack style
• $65,000 One more arcade machine, for a total of 7
We have more ideas in mind, and we will start adding them if the first stretch goal is reached.
Risks and challenges
The common risks and challenges associated with game development are:
• Time -> Development deadlines
• People -> Project management / Technical difficulties
• Money -> Lack of funding
These risks can lead to:
• Project failure or incompletion
• Poor game quality
• Game’s launch date pushed back
We believe that such risks and challenges can be either avoided or tackled easily thanks to one thing: preparation. As Benjamin Franklin once said: “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”. We live by those words, and thus we are prepared and have a plan to address each of the three categories of risks and challenges.
