About this project
“In our opinion, the single best software package for aspiring visual effects artists and filmmakers.” - Freddie Wong, creator of the VGHS web series and founder of RocketJump
“A love letter to the indie and no budget filmmaking community.” “They went all out. You could do all your editing, VFX and deliver your final product all in just this one piece of software.” - Ryan Connolly, Film Riot
“An ambitious new application that delivers stunning video effects at a breakthrough price.” - PC Pro magazine
HitFilm 2 combines 3D compositing, sophisticated visual effects and video editing in a unique filmmaking toolkit. So far it’s only been available on Windows. This Kickstarter is about getting HitFilm on Mac as well.
Stretch goals announced!
Thanks to you, our amazing backers, we've met our funding goal ahead of time. That means it's time to talk stretch goals:
Stretch goal #1: £35,000 – Free 3D models & stock from RodyPolis.com FOR ALL BACKERS *ACCOMPLISHED!*
If we pass £35,000 then ALL BACKERS will get an awesome stock pack courtesy of RodyPolis.com. It includes a compilation of high quality 3D models (which you can import and render inside HitFilm 2 Ultimate!) plus stock lens flares, pyro effects and time lapses.
To get an idea of the pack's quality, here are some examples:
All backers will receive this pack if we get to £35,000, so keep on spreading the word! You can also boost up your pledge if you’re so inclined. ;)
Stretch goal #2: £40,000 – develop new effects for HitFilm 2 Ultimate *ACCOMPLISHED*
If we break £40k, then we’ll enhance HitFilm 2 Ultimate with additional visual effects features.
We’re always working on new tech and this stretch goal will enable us to take a couple of projects out of R&D and get them up and running in the software. The new effects will go into both the Mac AND Windows versions.
So if you’d like procedural, anamorphic lens flares and cinematic grading, £40,000 is the target.
Stretch goal #3: £45,000 – user events at the NAB and IBC shows! *ACCOMPLISHED!*
HitFilm is growing every month and that’s thanks to all of you – our backers. Not just through the Kickstarter, but everybody who has supported us and our software right from the start.
It’s about time we put some names to faces and the best way to do that is throw a party or two. If we hit £45k we’ll organise user events at the NAB Show in Las Vegas and the IBC Show in Amsterdam so that we can meet as many of our American and European supporters as possible.
Once again, massive thanks to all of you for making this happen. Whatever the final number, this is yet more proof that crowdfunding is a transformative platform - for us as a company, for you as filmmakers and for the industry as a whole.
We need your help. Going cross-platform is expensive. We’re investing a lot in the Mac version but FXhome is a small developer and there are a lot of up-front costs. This Kickstarter is about accelerating development to make the Mac version happen in 2013.
Small developer. Big software.
The HitFilm project has always been about disrupting the scene. We make software that is both powerful and affordable. Our aim is to bring professional concepts and techniques to all filmmakers, regardless of age, experience or budget.
Supporting young and indie filmmakers is a core part of why FXhome was founded over 10 years ago.
HitFilm is designed to blow away all expectations. The software has only existed for 2 years but already includes:
- Over 150 effects. These aren't presets - they're fully customizable. No need to buy expensive extra plug-ins.
- A powerful 2D and 3D compositing environment.
- A revolutionary workflow: jump between a traditional NLE sequence and a layer-based composite shot with a single click.
- A powerful, 3D, physics-driven particle simulator. We’re not kidding around: it’s really, really good.
- Built-in 3D model import with self-shadowing, textures and group animation. No other compositor does this, especially for less than $500. (Supports .obj, .lwo, .3ds)
- 3D cameras with motion blur and depth of field.
- Advanced chroma key & matte control for green screen compositing.
- Built-in optical flow motion tracking + .ma camera tracking data import.
- Academy Award-winning planar tracking technology with mocha HitFilm.
- Non-linear editing tools: ripple, roll, slip, slice with trim viewer.
- Procedural lightning, 3D gunfire, shattering, optical light flares, blood spray and film damage. To name a handful of the 150+ effects.
- 3D text for sophisticated titling and motion graphics.
HitFilm 2 Ultimate includes a full 3D compositing environment and advanced motion tracking, a non-linear editor and advanced features such as a fully featured particle engine and 3D model import.
No expensive plug-ins are required, unlike with other compositing software that starts at twice our price. You definitely won’t find another editor with these compositing and VFX features.
The big Mac question.
“Is there a Mac version?”
That was one of the first questions asked when HitFilm came out on Windows PC in 2011. At that time Mac hardware was in a transition period, which was a problem for our GPU-accelerated rendering.
HitFilm 2 was released at the end of 2012. Things have changed: Mac hardware is now more than capable of handling HitFilm. If you have a Mac made since mid-2011 you'll be fine. If you have an older Mac, make sure it has a modern processor (Intel i5, i7 or better) with a good graphics card:
- Intel HD3000 or HD4000
- Radeon HD5000 series or above
- Geforce 600 series or above
We’ve already completed the R&D and are ready to go.
An OS X version of HitFilm 2 can now be a reality.
Developing cross-platform software isn’t always as simple as pressing the ‘compile for Mac’ button, unfortunately. It takes a lot of work and is expensive – but we know we can do it.
On Mac in 2013.
FXhome is small, independent software developer. Making products as big as HitFilm is expensive. That’s why powerful filmmaking software like this usually comes with a high price.
The vast majority of the Mac version will be funded by FXhome. We’ve already invested heavily in the initial R&D. The challenge is in the immediate cost to equip our developers with the essential hardware, development tools, software licenses and test machines needed to create the Mac version.
That’s where we need your help.
This Kickstarter gives us the boost we need right now to accelerate development. It allows us to keep the software affordable and speed up development so that HitFilm Mac comes out this year.
When this year? We’re aiming for November.
Proof of concept already exists.
HitFilm 2 is right there, on Windows PC. You can try it right now, if you know somebody with a PC or if you Boot Camp your Mac (yeah, we know – you really don’t want to do that, right? Hey - you should totally back us on Kickstarter!).
The point is that you’re not backing an unknown project – HitFilm 2 already exists. Filmmakers are using it everyday to produce amazing content. You know what you're getting into.
If you don’t have PC access, check out our YouTube channel where you’ll find hours of tutorials showing what the software can do. You can back us with absolute certainty of what the project is all about.
This is about giving Mac filmmakers the tools they deserve.
About the pledge tiers
We have multiple pledge tiers, so that you can back the HitFilm Mac project at whatever level you want.
Already got HitFilm on Windows but want to help us out? We've got tiers just for you.
Supporters – the £5 (approx. $8) and £15 (approx. $25) tiers are a way to help the project even if you're on a tight budget right now. You’ll get a cool Kickstarter badge over on the HitFilm.com forums. At £15 you’ll also be immortalized on the software’s credits screen and get an awesome pack of 3D models and stock footage.
The HitFilmer – at this tier and every one above it, you’ll get the HitFilm 2 Ultimate software on Mac as soon as it is released. At £165 (approx. $250) you get a huge saving off the normal price (£299 / $399) while at the same time making the project happen. Double-win.
The Box – who doesn’t love a limited edition box? At £330 (approx. $500) you’ll be getting a special, one-off collector’s edition of amazing stuff with the software. There’s tutorials, a t-shirt, a mousepad and much more. These boxes are being made specifically for the Kickstarter and will never be available again.
Meanwhile, if you've already got HitFilm for Windows but still want to help out the project, check out The Veteran, which gets you the limited edition box (minus the software) for a tidy £65 (approx. $100).
After this things get really interesting, with a selection of unique rewards that you won’t find anywhere outside of this Kickstarter.
The Scholar offers customized, one-on-one HitFilm training in the form of a personalized tutorial session with product expert Simon K Jones.
If you’re looking for some VFX assistance or advice, check out The Consultant. We’ll advise on a key VFX shot in your next movie. If you have questions we’ll get you answers, either from our own experts or our extended network of VFX artists.
The Collaborators is hugely exciting if you’re a team of young, indie filmmakers. At £660 (approx. $1000) it looks like a lot, but you get 6 separate HitFilm 2 Ultimate licenses, which can be used on Mac or PC. That means if you team up with 5 of your filmmaking friends, you each only pay £110 (approx. $160) for software that normally costs £299 (approx. $399). Not a bad deal, eh?
Teachers and VFX artists at a school or post house might be more interested in The Studio, which includes a huge 60 seat site license for £1,970 (approx. $3000). If you’re looking to equip an entire lab or studio while at the same time helping to democratize VFX on the Mac, it’s a superb deal.
If you want to check out how we do things here, you might want to plump for The Visitor, which grants you access to FXhome headquarters and a fancy, British lunch with the HitFilm team.
The Designer will put you directly in touch with our development team. We’ll work on a brand new 2D effect of your own design which will go into a future version of HitFilm. You bring the idea, we’ll bring the tech and expertise.
Every Kickstarter has to have a crazy reward and ours is The Transporter. If you’ve always wanted to meet FXhome boss Josh Davies (?) this is your big chance, as he’ll travel to anywhere in the world (as long as a plane can get relatively close to it) to hand deliver your limited edition HitFilm box. He’ll even shake your hand.
There are many more pledge tiers available - take a look on the right.
If the Kickstarter succeeds, our estimated delivery date for the Mac version is November 2013. Unless otherwise stated, that’s when most of the rewards will be delivered. Check out the FAQs below for more details.
A quick note on exchange rates
So, we’re based in the United Kingdom. But HitFilm is used internationally, particularly in the USA. However, Kickstarter won’t let us show our goal and tiers in $USD, so they’re all displayed £GBP.
If you’re from the US this means the UK value will be converted to dollars when you pledge. In each pledge tier we’ve tried to indicate the rough conversion amount you can expect but this may fluctuate depending on the state of the world economy – and I think we all know just how reliable that is at the moment.
If you have any questions at all about international pledges please do contact us.
Risks and challenges
Making complex software is difficult and expensive but HitFilm Mac has several aspects which make it a confident Kickstarter project:
HitFilm already exists – this isn’t a vague concept in the very early stages of development. HitFilm 2 already exists and is available for Windows PCs, we just need your help to get onto Mac. Thousands of PC users are already using HitFilm – you can even go try the PC demo if you want to know more before pledging to our Kickstarter.
A great team – FXhome has been developing video and photo software since 2001. We’ve got an experienced, international team of experts that we’ve pulled together from the UK, the USA, Australia, France and Portugal. We’re a small, independent developer but we know what we’re doing. If you’ve not heard of us before, go check us out on Facebook, YouTube or over on the HitFilm.com community.
In it together – software development is hugely expensive and we don’t expect you to fund the entire project. We’ve already invested heavily in R&D to confirm that a Mac version is possible and will be investing much more in the project. The challenge is finding the up-front funding needed to equip our devs and get the project moving – that’s where you come in.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
