What does it mean to be brave?
Are you capable of taking consequences of your actions in specific circumstances keeping in mind the bigger picture?
Step into the shoes of one of five characters fighting for power in the modern world of U.S. politics and media.
The idea for "Home of the Brave" was born from the desire to create a game that would accurately represent complex social and psychological aspects of the world of politics. The core concept was to blend re-playable board game mechanics with intriguing and intense storytelling. Before playing you can dive into the world of the game by reading 18-page novella that comes with the box. All of the in-game character’s choices are the reflections of player’s actions and decisions. The illustrations on the cards are strongly influenced by the courtroom sketches, by which we hope to achieve a unique style and create original narration.
Choose from five playable characters, each with a different set of cards (journalist, businessman, republican, democrat and gangster). Gather your supporters and collect money to influence the situation in five domains – media, business, social activism, politics and the criminal underworld. Negotiate, make alliances and gain trust, but remember – everyone is haunted by the demons of the past… and you can use that advantage for your own purposes. Vote on random political/social events, but watch out for lobbyists – consider their opinion or suffer the consequences.
We are proud to say that the effect of our hard work is a functional prototype which we hope to turn into a fully-fledged board game with the help of our backers.
How to play?
The game takes place in rounds. Each round (except the first) starts with revealing a voting card (events) and voting for one of its two possible results. Then the players take turns doing actions (play a card, earn profit from previously played cards, advance on the path of bravery, etc.). When everyone has finished doing actions and has passed, the round ends - players draw new cards and reveal a new voting card. The primary player action is to play a card. Each character has their own deck of cards representing their typical behavior, acquaintances, and strengths. Each card has a cost (in resources) to play it, which is printed on the card. Skillful resource management and optimal card play is the key to victory in Home of the Brave.
A basic type of resource in the game is supporter cubes. They symbolize allies, voters, subordinates, or favors owed to a character. There are four types: Republicans, Democrats, Activists and Criminals.
Additional resource types are dollars and bravery points.
Players keep their own resources hidden behind screens so that opponents cannot see them. A player pays the cost of playing a card by paying the required resources from behind their screen to the bank. A player cannot play a given card if they do not have all the required resources.
The aim of the game is to gain 4 (or more) stars before one’s opponents. 2 stars can be gained by career advancement along the path of bravery, but each character also has many other ways to earn stars, mostly through their personal goal cards. Players will often have to prioritize between their career and private life.

We are a team of professional enthusiasts/enthusiastic professionals (depending on the circumstances) based in Warsaw, Poland. We strive to create our own company producing innovative, complex tabletop gaming experiences.
Radosław Kobus - founder of successful Internet start-ups, who decided to face a new challenge in the area he was always passionate about: board games. Profesionally focused on designing the best possible user/customer experience. Personally loves history, political sciences, good literature and games/movies with intriguing, juicy storytelling and suprising outcomes.
Greatly inspired by magnificent products: George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire", TV series "House of Cards" and board game "Twilight Struggle", I had a vision of a board game reflecting incredible complexity of world of politics, with its alliances and betrayals, ruthlessness and sacrifices for higher cause, tensions between politicians, social activists, gangsters and media. I intended to present full spectrum of unobvious motifs, grey-shaded dilemmas and moral decisions, conflicts between one's fundamental principles and efficiency in achieving goals. The intention was to create a game that allows very different strategies leading to victory - just as people different in their characters and actions find various paths to reach their goals. I wanted to pack it all in an exciting board game with large amount of beautiful cards and captivating story. So... »You must gather your party before venturing forth«
And the rest of the Party consists of:
Piotr Kulczycki - playwriter, storyteller, theatre director. Owner of Warsaw-based Wolandejski Theatre. Creative Industries Manager.
I am in writing and storytelling business, so that's what the board games are to me: another stories to tell. When Radek asked me to create characters and story behind Home of the Brave, I've eagerly accepted the task. I am fascinated by the politics, history and culture of the US. So, I wrote the novella to give our characters much needed background and let us see them as clearly as characters of the book, movie or tv series. From that point it only got better for me with more characters and stories to create. I hope that with each card we will be able to give you separate, interesting story and that they all will constitute the unique world of Home of the Brave.
Jan Madejski - a programmer, musician, but above all a board and computer game designer (as a hobby since early childhood and professionally for 8 years). He has created large advertising and training games for corporations, small party and family games, educational history games and adventure games. Jan is a member of the Monsoon Group - an association of game designers and testers. He leads game development workshops whenever he finds the opportunity: at conventions, in culture centers and on company hackathons.
Constraints breed creativity. Since the very first discussions about "Home of the Brave" it was clear to me that many seemingly contradictory elements had to be brought together in this project: creating a game about politics and at the same time creating a game about people; metagame thoroughly woven into mechanics, but at the same time not forced by it; non-trivial dilemmas along with avoidance of overly complicated rules... Designing and testing this game were many months of work and phenomenal challenge. Spoiler alert - We've made it!
Marek Kamiński - PR and marketing specialist, musician, studies human sciences and cultural studies.
In my teenage years I was fascinated by the world of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights (yeah, I'm a generic 90's kid). I've spent my time playing D&D and Magic: The Gathering with friends. I've also painted Warhammer miniatures (Team Bretonnia) and 1:72 World War II infantry squads, tanks and airplanes. Today, I'm amazed by the diversity of tabletop market and its popularity among people of different age. It's truly exciting and fulfilling to take part in creating gaming experiences (or should I say: memories) for other gamers all around the world.
Risks and challenges
This is our first kickstarter project. However, we collaborate with people working many years in board game industry in Poland to deliver the best product possible, thus would like to ensure our backers that this enterprise is in good hands.
Home of the Brave is a complicated board game with many details and off-track alternative ways to play it. We have spend many months playtesting the game to make sure that it has well balanced gameplay and is a competetive title on modern tabletop market. We have deliberately set the shipping date to March, 2019 to include any possible delays in manufacturing and shipping of the game. But we hope to deliver our product sooner than that.
Please note that this is not a pre-order and the final product might slightly change in the process. Every change implemented will be aimed at improving quality of the components and gaming experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
