About this project

What is 'FusionPlay - Heroes?'

'FusionPlay - Heroes' is the first mobile Near Field Communication (NFC) card game. It’s played with physical cards, each containing a NFC chip. These chips allow for communication between the playing cards and your smartphone. As soon as you slide a card under the smartphone, it appears on the phone screen. The app processes the actions and displays the results.

The game itself is a duel between two players, a digital-analog homage to the beat 'em-up games of the 16-bit era. Each player chooses one of the 4 heroes and uses the hero's unique skills to win the battle. This fast-paced game always motivates you to play “just one more round.” All the components are pocket-sized, so players can take it with them anywhere.

Which devices are supported?

Only NFC capable Android devices are supported.

If you want to know if your Android smartphone or tablet is supported, try installing the free 'FusionPlay Heroes' app. The app store will prevent you from installing the app or even hide it if you are trying to install it from an unsupported device. So, if you can install the app properly, your device is supported.

What's so special about this?

This game combines the best of two worlds: traditional card games, and smartphone apps.

You can sit together with a friend and watch them get angry because of the critical hit you just landed, or when you try to decipher their poker face. Did your opponent notice you preparing a combo? Will they block and reflect it, or will they fall into your trap? The game encourages you to play around with the cards. The cards seem to want you to feel their great texture. This feeling cannot be replaced by an image of a card on a screen.

Additionally, you have the upside of an app. The game shows the status of both heroes in real-time. It stores data, shows all current buffs, debuffs health, and it also does all the math for you. On top of this, the game makes sure the rules are followed. So you don’t even need to know them to play the game. Most other complex card games come with a thick and complicated rule book. ‘FusionPlay – Heroes’ doesn't even need one. The combination of these two worlds creates a game that is easy to learn, but offers complexity, too.

It allows you to play with a friend, no matter where you are. It’s quick and easy, so you don’t need to take an hour to explain it, or a whole evening to play. Simply bring it out with a friend and play a quick match.

And there is one more important thing: Unlike other smartphone apps and modern smart-items, the 'FusionPlay - Heroes' app only runs on your smartphone. It doesn’t send your data to a cloud, and it doesn't have access to your current GPS position, your emails, or your whole address book. It also doesn't require you to create yet another unnecessary account that you neither want nor need.

Why have NFC technology? Isn’t this just a gimmick?

NFC is used to enable the fast-paced gameplay. Reading QR-codes via camera is slow and awkward. With the technology of the FusionPlay Cards, you just slide them under the smartphone, and they appear on the screen immediately. This makes the whole game experience smooth and fluid. Instead of going through the hassle of getting the cards recognized (e.g. with barcodes), NFC reading is so fast and reliable that it's fun to play around with scanning the cards.

Feedback from the media:

How is the card quality?

These are not normal playing cards made just out of cardboard, rather they are high-tech built into a playing card. They are carefully designed to showcase this in every single aspect, even in ways that most people won't ever notice. Obviously, the chips inside use a huge antenna to maximize the range of the NFC detection.

The way the NFC-chips are put into the cards is a company secret. Our partner smart-TEC produces the cards at an affordable price, and with great quality. So, you can imagine why they'd keep it a secret.

The cards have a good weight, are sturdy, and feel good in your hands. They are also designed to have a really unique feel to them. The diverse effect of the artwork is highlighted by a thick layer of transparent lacquer, giving the cards an embossed texture. You can see and also feel the quality. The FusionPlay Logo on the backside even looks like it is printed in metal. When holding the cards against the sunlight, you’ll see these effects shining and sparkling.

The cards are laser-cut, with the thin layers of cardboard and the integrated NFC chip melted together on the edges. You won’t be able to detect the different layers that are used in the production. The laser-cut also gives the edges of the cards a nice rough 'used and dirty' retro-look. This just really enhances their look and feel.

How is the price justified?

There was a lot of discussion about the pricing of the game. 14 high-quality, high-tech, NFC-enabled devices that look like playing cards are included, but people might think, "Oh, there are only 14 cards inside!" Also, people usually assume that standard components, such as the packaging of the game, or the printed rule books, do not cost anything. That might be the case for huge publishers, but it is a totally different story when you produce in small quantities. Suddenly, these items become expensive as well, add up, and are put on top of the price.

In the end, we decided to keep the price as low as possible. This doesn't give us a large margin, but it covers the production costs of the physical components, and a tiny portion of the development costs for the game. The intention is not to make big money with the Kickstarter campaign but rather to introduce our way of gaming to the world. If people like it, we will be able to produce it at lower costs in the future, and maybe even recover some of the initial development costs.

Check before you pledge!

You need an NFC-capable Android device to play the game! If you're not sure whether your device has NFC built in or not, check by trying to install the app. The app won't install on devices that don't have NFC capabilities.

To check your phone:

  • Using your Android device, find the App on Google Play by searching for 'FusionPlay' or using the QR-Code below.
  • If you can't find the app by searching it or the app page shows a hint like "Your device is not compatible!" then you don't have NFC and your device is not supported.
  • If you do find the App and it provides an Install Button, then your device has NFC and is supported.

Who are the heroes?

The game introduces four strange heroes, who do not take themselves very seriously. The evil scientist, Prof. Dr. Dr. Hartmut Sengenberg, has started a horrible experiment at the CERN Institute in Switzerland. As a result, the heroes were taken from their own time and space, and brought to the halls of the Large Hadron Collider. There, they are forced to fight for their lives.

Donar is the Germanic god of thunder. He is disgusted by the fact that everyone in the modern world is only talking about Thor, because the Nordic mythology seems to be more popular than the Germanic.

Kim is a schizophrenic Samurai from the 16th century, who cannot control his angry outbursts, which regularly results in victims among his own ranks. Because of this, the members of his clan started calling him 'Kim Oh No.'

Edward, a Medieval knight, was always annoyed by his 16 older brothers. They even stole his royal sword, which caused him to leave the country and create his own fighting-style with just with a shield and a fist. Since then, he has called himself 'Sir Shieldalot,' but he is the only one doing so.

The last contester is Titchy, a student working at the CERN Institute, and conducting an experiment with radiation and a spider. The catastrophic experiment of the evil scientist had a side effect, making the tarantula Snooks grow as large as a dog, and gain basic intelligence. Titchy and Snooks teamed up to stand up for themselves.

The artwork of the heroes was created by the talented Christine Faust. She really captured each characters' intentions and compiled them into these great comic-style pieces of art.

Who is behind the project?

Konrad Kunze is a passionate Game Designer, and has been since his childhood. He's developed a sense for analyzing the essence of gaming. Why is one specific game mechanic fun, and another boring? Most of his concepts were seen only by his friends, but then there was one brilliant idea that needed to become big. In 2012, he invented the basic concept of mobile NFC card gaming, and created a very early playable prototype. This one was admittedly really ugly, but it showcased the idea of the concept.

Working at IT Sonix, a software company in Leipzig, he amazed his boss with this concept and convinced him to fund a team that brought this idea to life. The brand FusionPlay was born as a symbol of the two worlds merged by the game. One world is the traditional game play with the physical/real world items that card and board games have. The other is the digital world of apps and video games that grows larger every day. Although the brand is new, the people working for the company behind it are experienced usability designers and mobile developers, who have worked together for years and deliver software to international companies.

It took until 2016 for all work on the game itself to be completed, and finally a partner was found, who is capable of producing the NFC-cards on a large scale at an affordable cost. This partner is smart-TEC. They are experts in RFID and NFC Technology. They have immense knowledge in creating and designing transponders for different sizes, designs, and usability needs. They have found a method of creating high-quality playing cards with NFC chips inside, which met all our expectations. Even the price tag was acceptable to market, and that made our game possible. The company is located in Oberhaching (Bavaria), close to Munich in Germany, and as you know, German quality is about more than just beer at Oktoberfest. ;-)

Risks and challenges

The game itself is complete. This means the cards, the app and the smartphone trays are ready. Everything is tested and works fine.

We're now focused on the last steps. André Eitz and Constance Knospe are doing a great job creating the final designs for the packaging and the game manual.

Ongoing beta tests are being run to fine-tune the balancing of the cards. It is a great upside of having a digital component in a game: the values and impacts of all actions can be balanced step by step, just by updating the app. This can even be continued after the cards are printed and the game is launched.

The last step remaining is production. We need to make a minimum number of games to produce them at an affordable price. As the process of getting the chips into the cards is expensive, a large number of cards need to be created at one time. Packaging and manuals need to be ordered in large quantities as well. This is why we're asking you for your support!
