A Festival Expressed By You.When you go to a festival. The festival starts at the festival. You pay to enter the festival. You then enter the festival. But what if there were more layers to this whole experience than the normal format that we are used to? What if the festival started in places you didn't expect it to? What if your whole experience started on public transport, as you were driving down the road?
As the festival day starts, there were things that started to change that you didn't expect, the entire 'theme' of the festival started to surround you, and you start to travel with it? What if you could, before you even left your suburb or station have already danced with an 'outreaching' performer, and that performer collectively drew in other festival goers? What if you took the aspects of 'reality' out of a festival? For instance, your medical help, your security your ticket sales people, your volunteers and stand holders didn't break character. But the feeling of safety was still very much there? The very world you spent your money on visiting wasn't broken until the very end.
Its part social experiment, part simple festival. Why?
The sense of community within music festivals is no secret, three days sleeping in a tent and listening to the same music, partying with next 'tent' neighbors and expressing more than you usually would to each other, is far outreaching. Not unlike 'Burning Man' or Tommrowland, the idea of creative expression is very important, and with the help of social media etc, the idea to bring together a large group of people before even stepping on the festival grounds is a very captivating idea. How can this all be done? Expression, while within a festival is very reactive. Its reactive to the 'theme' of the festival its reactive with the people within its grounds. But what if you had the chance to completely reinvent yourself, or join a clan? What if the crowd had the choice? By giving a number of options during ticketing, by connecting festival goers before even booking the festival, you could group together and book a 'Magic Bus' (perhaps provided by the festival) with all your friends and strangers that had similar ideas etc, you could book out 'your patch' and the option to create flags and list your clans collective ideas, so others could join. Again not unlike burning man and lots of other festivals, your clan could be expressed by a large piece of artwork, that could be either a blank canvas to be worked on during the festival or something brought in. You could choose a place for your 'clan' to meet before the festival depending on what cities or areas you live in. Its an idea for a festival to be creative off the back of the crowd rather than the other way round.
The name of the Festival 'Further' comes from the famous 'Magic bus' trip that took place in 1960s America with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. The idea is to induce a sense of absolute wonder and excitement and bring together a large group of people through the sense of a journey in the most colorful way possible.
The festival will be an expression of everything that we have, there will be no 'Main Stage' so to speak, the artists as mentioned before will arise from the crowd descending on the festival, however a distinctly Psychedelic feel will come from the festival, and to induce levels of dance, self created expression, a number of artists will play in different areas in the festival, from perhaps Psytrance, to expressive Jazz, to swing, rock and roll, up and coming artists. Its the placement of all of these that is very important, from forest surroundings to, hillsides and riversides, and not only is the artist outlined, but the space to which the the audience can express themselves will be very important.
The Website. The festivals website is very important, its the hub, its where all the ideas and groups come together to create the festivals unique feel, whether we make a vote on the theme (too constricting) or simply name the acts and sites available and the 'clans' can be produced from there. From choosing your colors, that we at 'Further' can develop into your camping ground etc the website needs to be the most colorful sense of expression and the easiest to use. With customer service being number one priority, big events like this can take a wrong turn from a simple glitch, and the idea that 'human is interacting with human' has to stand throughout the process.
The festival funds.
Any proceeds of this festival will simply go either back into the community, or if successful a vote will be put forth to put the funds into creating another one.
The First Step. The first step consists of three main areas.
1. Budgeting: A break down of the cost of land rental, Licences artists performing etc can be found in the PDF.
2. Location: Location, maybe one of the most important aspects of the first step, and one that can be crowd sourced, we are a small team and people in the Sydney area and surrounds can help with location ideas (More to come)
3. Reach: This is an idea that needs to reach as many people as possible so that a larger number of people with differing skills and professions can be used to set this festival up.
Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges:
The main risks and challenges that face this project, mainly sits with the filtering process of giving the crowd the authority, with the creation of clans and groups, art works and installations etc, we need to be site specific and a team of people need to be looking after the influx of ideas from so many people. The idea of crowd sharing, on the website and social media needs to be looked at, sharing of information, hitching rides, and clan development needs to be addressed. We are a small team with a focus on a greater goal of expression, yet these issues need to be addressed before we go live.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
