Day 7 in the Highlands... Community Polls!

Posted by Andreas Geiermann (Collaborator)

Hey everyone,

we are on Day 7 of our campaign and the team is working hard to get the game polished up and give you all the details you are asking for in the comments. Thank you for your ongoing support and your patience!

Today we want to announce that we would like to let you shape a part of the game to celebrate the Glen More II community. We would like to open two new polls to the community that will determine tiles that will be in the final product.

The first poll will let you select from a range of Whisky distilleries. The community favorite will be featured on a tile in the game.

The second poll is about Famous Scots. We will present you some choices, but we also want to hear from you which Scotsmen or Scotswomen YOU would like to see in the game. Write in the comments or send an email to ingelis@funtails.de to give us your Nominees. The polled candidate will get a special portrait drawn and will be added to the game as well.

Reminder: There is still time to add your ideas to the Alternative Artwork poll for the Rondell, as mentioned in the last Stretch Goal. This poll will be held together with the two mentioned above later in the campaign.

Best Wishes

The Funtails Team

I think it would be tragic if the very influential Scottish philosopher David Hume wasn't featured!

      Hi Jeremy,
the polls will take place in the near future, we are currently collecting ideas and sorting them. We will send an Update with the link to the polls when they go online.

I also am wondering about where we find polls? I'm a fan of thematically keeping the Scots to those post mortem. Wouldn't want to risk having a future Bill Cosby, Rosanne, Kevin Spacey, etc. future scandal come up in relation to my favorite hobby.

I think all of the ones that I would suggest are already mentioned: John Knox, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, etc. However here are a few off of the top of my head that would be funny and some others that may fit well thematically.

Funny: Dr. Beckett off of Stargate Atlantis, I second: Sean Connery as Bond, and Ewan MacGregor as ObiwanKenobe (sp?)

      Thematic:
      Found on Wikipedia
Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of Moray (c. 1278–1332), fought with King Robert I and James Lord of Douglas to regain Scotland's independence
John Forbes (1571–1606), Capuchin friar, known as Father Archangel
Dervorguilla of Galloway (c. 1210–1290), a 'lady of substance' in 13th-century Scotland, mother of king John I of Scotland, and founder of Sweetheart Abbey

    15. Paul Schreiner on

Famous Scots: Margaret of Scotland, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Queen of Scots

      Distilleries: Another vote for Oban!

      Famous Scots:
      - Robert the Bruce, of course
      - Bonnie Prince Charlie (or Charles Edward Stuart--not sure if I'd go for any of the longer variants of his name or they won't fit nicely on the tile ;-).
      - Flora MacDonald (another vote)
      - Mary Queen of Scots (assume she is already in the game given we've seen artistic development of her image)
      - Macbeth!
      - Cináed mac Ailpín
      - Malcolm 'Canmore' (I'll let someone with more knowledge of the Gaelic indicate how that should be styled since 'canmore' is the 'englishization')

Also another vote as a person that would prefer to see 'historical' persons of interest within the time period in which the game is set (i.e., pre 1800 or so).

    19. Chad Hensley on

      John Knox!

Also, from Scotland deep religious heritage: George Wishart, Jenny Geddes, Robert Leighton, William Guthrie, Thomas Chalmers, Andrew A Bonar, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, Samuel Rutherford, Ralph Erskine, and James Stalker.

    20. Randall Silver on

      Oh this is fun! Disilleries:

      - Highland Park (a delight to visit)
      - Jura (lovely island and great whisky)
      - Lagavulin (long been my favourite whisky)
      - Oban (one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, and a lovely town around it)

Famous Scots I'd like to see in the game:

      - Robert The Bruce (duh!)
      - William Wallace (also duh)
      - Sir Walter Scott
      - Flora MacDonald
      - And I wholeheartedly agree with @Aitor Zaindari: Black Agnes!

Another awesome Scottish lady was Agnes, Countess of Dunbar ("Black Agnes"). She held her castle when her husband was away, against 20,000 English forces, with only a few guards and her servants. The Wikipedia page about her (and her actions during the siege of Dunbar Castle) is a delight to read.

As to Famous Scots, I've seen quite a few awesome historical dudes in the previews already, so I'm suggesting some impressive ladies:

      1. Mary Somerville ("Queen of Science", science writer, astronomer and polymath)

      2. Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan (significant figure in the Wars of Scottish Independence, crowned Robert the Bruce because her husband sided with the English)

      3. Fanny Wright (writer, freethinker, lecturer, slavery abolitionist, social activist and reformer)

Wow, thank you all so much for your quick feedback!

Just to clarify, the polls for the backers will be set up later this week. For now we look for your nominations for famous Scotsmen or Scotswomen :)

    32. Andreas Geiermann Collaborator on

@Stefan William Wallace is an A-Stack staple since day 1 :)

@ Mark: We will announce the start of the polls in a few days in an additional update. Backers will get a link then.

@ Gregory: Sir Sean Connery... that would be awesome! We think every Scotsmen or Scotswomen can be nominated. That should be part of the fun actually. There might be some legal things to consider for some probably, but we will take a look at that. For now, nominate as you wish! :)

      More a general comment:
      - I would like to see famous for science around the suitable time period
      - I would not like to see any modern names. You seem to be getting a lot of modern suggestions since people know famous modern people and few people (myself included) have an in-depth knowledge of famous people around the time period the game is taking place. To me modern names would spoil the flavour of the game which is stated to be "early medieval ages until the 19th century" - although I would prefer a slightly tighter timescale even if the names are less famous.

      Hi !
I think this is awesome to involve the community in shaping the game a bit. Regarding famous scots, do they have to be historical scotsmen/scotswomen ? or can they be nowadays scots, because I'd love to see Sean Connery portrayed as an old painting xD
