[Dec 22 update]: we have reworked the basics to expand the game up to 6 players instead of 4 before.

ZNA is a cooperative survival boardgame for 1 to 6 players that takes place in Boston, in 2025.

The city has been struck by a storm of dark smoke that the inhabitants will later call “the Fog”. This fog destroys everything in its path, leaving behind it a world plunged into chaos. Nobody knows the exact extent of the damage. The Fog concentrates as it settles over the areas it hits, making them dangerous, almost impassable, and infested with threatening mutants.

Indeed, the vast majority of the population seems to have been infected by the Fog. Those who were not killed have been contaminated to the point of transforming into violent and ruthless creatures with superhuman abilities. Their only motivation appears to be the constant hunt of the survivors.

Together, you will progress across the modular game board, searching for equipment, swapping objects with one another, looting chemical storage facilities in order to mix up concoctions for various uses, and most of all, fight the Fog and the mutants it created.

ZNA is designed to offer players a large variety of choices and configurations, with first class-material. Find out the origins of the Fog, what happens to the survivors, and much, much more in 12 original scenarios.

 

Developing the game for more than a year now, we believe that we already came to a solid set of rules and original mechanisms even if we know that things still can be improved (and hopefully, this campaign success would give us the opportunity to do so). Even though ZNA is — above all — a boardgame, during the design process it quickly became apparent that developing a digital interface, which would feature a tile scanner and use augmented reality, would be an original and appealing asset to the game. The more we explored this concept, ideas for new features popped into our heads, and we ended up devising an entire ZNA app. This would be more than just some one-dimensional app: This Companion would include game help, interactive scenarios, a map editor, storytelling, augmented reality, and more!

We believe that these enhanced gameplay features will provide not just new ways to play the game, but even more immersion in the ransacked Boston of 2025.

Here is a quick preview of the features that would be included:

  • Drone hacking, which enables you to scan unexplored tiles of the gameboard, in order to locate certain elements.
  • Additional storytelling for the narration of primary and secondary objectives, the heroes’ backgrounds, scenario stories, with recorded voices and animated cinematics.
  • A game guide to assist players in scenario setup.
  • A map editor, to allow you to create and save your own original maps.
  • And more!

Please note that all of the showed pictures are taken from our actual prototype and that everything is to be vastly improved in the final versions of the digital companion/AR application.

As we reach higher and higher stretch goals, that means more and more features that we can add to this Companion.

Although we really hope to fully develop this amazing tool, the ZNA companion and the augmented reality WILL NOT be included in the basic Kickstarter funding goal. Instead, these things will be unlocked as we reach the certain stretch goals.

Indeed, regarding the way we see such application - definitely far from some useless visual gadget - the development costs for such technology would be prohibitively expensive, were we to produce the minimum number of ZNA games; however, as we fund more and more copies of this awesome game, the cost of app development can be spread across more games, and becomes feasible. Even though we would be thrilled to reach the highest goal, and make all of this happen, we feel that it is more important to offer the “basic” ZNA boardgame, and give it a chance to see the light of day. Increasing basic Kickstarter goal in an attempt to include everything right out of the gate would reduce our chances to reach that bar and successfully fund the project, and might condemn the ZNA boardgame from receiving that “breath of life”.

But, hold it right there! Read the following chapter about the campaign design and you’ll see how this actually can turn out to be the coolest reward you’ll get almost for free. ;)

After our first successful Kickstarter campaign for the Collector’s Edition of our game Tokaido, we started designing ZNA and thinking about its Kickstarter campaign. With this fresh experience, we came to the absolute certainty that we did not want to offer à la carte add-ons, or complicated Pledge Levels and Stretch Goals: We knew that we wanted to offer EVERYTHING that gets unlocked to EVERYONE who supports the campaign.

Once we had come to this conclusion, we decided to offer only 2 pledge levels (Early Bird and Regular, both in English OR French - as we are also a French publisher), and to automatically include all unlocked Stretch Goals in every backer’s copy of the game.

This means one simple thing — and simple is always beautiful: The more you share information about this campaign, the more stuff you’ll see when you open your box, and the more features you will see on your tablet and/or smartphone!

FUNFORGE is a world-renowned publisher of boardgames. Since 2008, we have published more than a dozen games, made by famous designers such as Antoine Bauza, Bruno Faidutti, Alan Moon, and James Ernest. The special care we take in producing our games is well known. We are a small but dynamic team. Our domestic graphic design workshop allows us to control the entire production process (from component designs to 3D modeling, including mold and tool conceptualization).

What people usually do not know about our team is that most of us come originally from the video game industry. This means that when we kick around developing digital stuff, we know what we are talking about, in terms of prices and delays, but also quality and teamwork.

Even if we are a small (but talented) core team, we also are tapped into a great network of artists, coders, and the other skilled individuals needed to develop the ZNA Companion, and to ensure that this will be developed with at least the same level of quality, dedication, and diligence that we have put into all of our “classic” boardgame stuff.

You are only able to get ONE item at your pledge level.

Thanks to our logistics platforms and the experience we learned from our previous campaign, we are pleased to say that the shipping will be free for numerous countries.

However, it may happen that depending on your location, a shipping fee applies. In that case, you MUST ADD the SHIPPING FEE corresponding to your country of delivery to your pledge. This should have been processed automatically by the Kickstarter pledge manager upon your order and depending on your account location. Please note that if you forget to add the shipping fee to your pledge, we will need to contact you later to arrange on for additional payment, which will complicate your order and lead to delays (and waste time we could be spending making ZNA even more amazing). So, please, be careful to directly add the shipping fee to your pledge level.

ZNA is a game designed to contain a plethora of components: 40 illustrated and reversible map tiles, help sheets, individual player boards, numerous punchboard tokens, custom engraved dice, more than 270 cards (events, equipment, objectives), and 80 very detailed figurines ranging from 35mm to 80mm tall. Although we are able to produce complex games, this kind of game, packed with high-quality components, implies a significant financial investment that, as a small company, we cannot make by ourselves. That is one of the reasons we are asking you, our beautiful backers, for help in financing it.

Our dream is to reach our highest goal, so we can offer all the best options we envisioned for ZNA, including an interactive Companion with augmented reality features for smartphones and tablets.

There is nothing in existence that is like the ZNA Companion and its augmented reality features as we imagined them, therefore we have to develop it ourselves from scratch. We already have the know-how and the experience to make the ZNA app the best boardgame assistant in the world. The only thing we still need is your little push, so we can afford to do it!

Developing both the technology and the artistic designs for the App represents not only a lot of time but also a huge amount of money, as it requires hiring several people (coders, graphic designers, sound designers, producer etc.) for a few months.

Perfectionists that we are, we do not want to do half the work, and only offer you a pretty gadget. We want to create a true, functional tool that will bring real additional gameplay features, enhance the immersion in the game, and add flavor to the game experience.

Launching a Kickstarter campaign is the only way we will be able to have the financial means necessary to develop this tool and offer it to you.

By supporting this project, not only will you get attractive prices and Kickstarter exclusives, but you will also allow us to develop this new dimension we want to create for ZNA and more games to come.
