Completely sound oriented game. Designed for the visually impaired. Anyone can enjoy it. It will challenge the way you play video games

               Help Us Build Sound Challenge

Our goal is to build a FREE video game for blind or visually impaired people.

Sound Challenge is a game completely sound oriented. It's a way for blind or visually impaired people to have fun playing video games. It will be FREE to download on the iOS and Android app store.

The idea came from me being diagnosed with a risk of losing my eyesight. I thought about what I would miss the most and video games were high on the list. Thus, I decided to build a game in which sound was the main component instead of visual graphics; a game for the blind or visually impaired, which could, in essence, be enjoyed by anyone. As I proposed the idea to Lazaro, Sound Challenge was born.

A Game for the Blind or Visually Impaired

The game will immerse you in a full sound environment. If you play a level at night the music will be different than if you play that same level during the day. Everything you would expect to experience in a game, you will, by means of sounds, music, and the vibration of smart phones/tablets. The game incorporates a high-score system. We actually just finished implementing our own number-synthesizer, which tells you your score. The only graphic used in the game is the sound-wave-icon for the game’s app. The idea is that anybody can play this game yet be challenging enough that it will test your skills. The game will be for smart phones and tablets, since we believe it is the easiest way to play Sound Challenge.

How do you play?

The game is a fast-paced action reaction game pitting you against time. You are asked for input. When you hear a particular sound you have a limited amount of time to perform the action; such as touch the screen, shake it, turn right, left, or combo. The beginning of the game will give you a small tutorial so that you can associate a sound with an action. Thus, when you hear the [turn-right-sound] you know what you have to do. As you progress through the game you have less and less time to perform an action!

Play Testing the Game

The game is almost done. You can actually play through 3 levels at the moment.  Through play testing we have proven the game is fun and challenging. There is mathematical logic implemented so that as you keep playing and winning the game becomes more challenging. We have spent a two month developing the game. We have the passion and the dedication to continue working on it.

Why do we need your support?

We have the will to build the game but we lack the capital required. We plan to pay a musician, to make us custom sounds and music especially for our game. For every level we have added we need at least two songs, since we added the night and day feature. We could have used free music but then our game would not have been as unique as we wanted it to be. We also need to buy licenses, specially for iOS and Android development.

At first we thought that $200 was going to be enough to cover everything, but after some research and actually looking for people to make the sounds we calculated that $2500 would cover the game fully polished; a game that would actually be entertaining and fun to play.

All of the money goes into building the game and publishing it. We will not keep the money for ourselves. We will utilize your funds to build an awesome game. If we are funded we pledge that the game will be completed and totally FREE to play. We plan to give the game away for free. So everyone can have fun with it.

Who are we?

  • Rene Alfonso: A college student finishing up my Computer Science bachelor's degree. I wish to provide a way for those who are blind or visually impaired to enjoy video games. I already have some spinoff ideas to make similar games in the future. If we are able to publish Sound Challenge, do expect more advanced games for the blind or visually impaired.
  • Lazaro Herrera: A Computer Science student who wish to build robots and program video games. Is happy to build new interesting games.

We have a passion for building games. We are both part of the Game Developers Guild http://www.gamedevelopersguild.com/ where we have worked on other games. Check us out on the website to see our other game-projects, as well as what the guild is.
