About this project
It's not all about how it looks, but how it functions as you wear it.
Men are active. Dress shirts are restrictive. Isn't it about time we take a different approach to designing and wearing dress shirts?
Function & Form's premium dress shirts are designed for the active men who want the best quality fabric apparel yet look classy.
What makes Function & Form's dress shirt unique?
The neck opening: Button it up and it’s too stuffy (especially for guys with bigger body mass), button it down and it’s too revealing. Well, unless you are James Dean or even James Bond for that matter, most guys aren't that comfortable with showing off chest hair. The solution? - We added one extra button to give wearers added versatility. Perfect neck opening each and every time (including after washing it several times!)
The Sleeve Hold: Too hot? Grilling meat? Working on your car? Want to show off your Rolex? Whatever it is, men needs to roll up their dress shirt sleeves from time to time. The problem is, it never seems to stay up. One side may be lower, while another side may be higher. Sure, you can “roll” it up, but you’re sacrificing style. Our solution – we created an extra inner lining inside the sleeves that are made of cool fabrics with comfortable stretch materials. The logic works just like how you would pull up the sleeves of a sweatshirt.
Moisture wicking, Quick Drying armpit & back panels: It’s probably the most embarrassing part of a dress shirt – sweat stained armpits and back. The Canosis line of dress shirts from Function & Form is made with special cooling, moisture wicking, and quick drying fabrics using the latest technologies in textile production. The concept is actually based on mountain gear clothing. As climbers make their way up through rigorous conditions, the clothing that they are wearing has to be not only comfortable, but also durable while providing cooling sensation. We've taken the design cues from these high performance apparels and fused it into our premium dress shirts.
Common issues with current dress shirt designs:
Best value - Quality Fabric vs. Price:
SPA Brands (Zara, H&M, Forever 21, etc.):
Fabric is everything when it comes to the durability of any apparel. But it’s also the biggest cost driving factor. As the table above shows, most SPA brands (Zara, H&M, Forever 21 to name a few) uses 100g Voile Cotton. Voile is lightweight, but it’s not durable. Colors fade faster and wears out faster. It’s also the cheapest cotton you can get.
Luxury Brands (Hugo Boss, Zegna, etc.):
Alternatively, luxury premium brands that sell for $300 or more per dress shirts uses 120~140g Cotton / Cotton+Nylon fabrics for added durability. One of the biggest reasons why these shirts costs so much is because most of these shirts are sold through high-end retail shops and department stores which takes in additional profit margins (more cost to consumers).
Function & Form: Function & Form uses 120g cotton for Stylique – Polka Dots, 125g cotton for Stylique – Stripes (which also uses pre-dyed woven fabric to reduce color fade), 135g cotton for Canosis (95% cotton / 5% Nylon) and 150g cotton for Printo dress shirts. Even our deep V-neck base layer shirts are made with premium cotton (100%) that's designed to last!
Honest Value – Quality vs. Pricing:
How do I know it will fit me?
Above is our standard size chart (North American size standards). But if we left it at that, we wouldn't be a real Kickstarter would we?
After you order, you will be able to send in your standard size, body type (just select one of the five - as best as you can), and your exact measurements (optional). The more support we get, the better custom-fitting your dress shirt will be as more "size groups" are created.
About the designer:
Chris Park is best known for his work at MOGG (premium women’s line at LG Fashion). Since 2010, he has designed the best selling line of apparel while working at LG. Prior to his experience at LG, Chris was awarded Korea’s Fashion Award by the Prime Minister of Korea in 2010. In the same year, he also won ESMOD’s Wear award and graduated with honors. Chris's meticulous and perfectionist approach to designing unique clothing led to the final creation of Function & Form’s men’s dress shirts from a different angle. Instead of following the "industry standard" in designing and making dress shirts, he looked at it from "how do we wear dress shirts?" point of view. The result - perfect fitting, high quality, functional dress shirts that also looks great!
What you get:
We really hope that you like our new approach to men's dress shirts! Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Chris and his team have worked in the fashion industry designing and manufacturing premium high-end apparels for the past 4 years. Having worked as a senior designer for a global company such as LG, he also has personal relations with many of the top quality fabric suppliers. In fact, in order to speed up the production and delivery, we will be pre-ordering raw materials half way through our campaign.
There are challenges however. Each and every dress shirt has to be hand-made by skilled tailors. Due to its unique designs, there aren't any automated machines that can stamp out our dress shirts. Depending on the amount of orders that we get, it may take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks for all the orders are made. Shipping can also take another few days on top of that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
