Welcome to our Project - we are glad you finally landed here.

Did you ever try to shoot a bullet into the ground and see what happens?
Probably it will grow a big beautiful tree of pistols or bullets or probably it will just be a bunch of wheat plants… Who knows?
We do.

Welcome to Corn Wars! You need to plant seeds and sell the fruit to be able to buy better seeds, weapons and pay your taxes.
Oh! Wait! Weapons? YES! They are… like… Uncommon tools for farming...?

The idea came up during Ludum Dare 41 Game-Jam and we had much positive criticism and lots of support during our live-coding-streams.

Game-Description

CornWars is a mash-up of classical farming simulation and a shooter-game. We plan to release it on PC but console ports could come in future depending on the success of the game. Basically you will play as a farmer on your very own small world. You will start with a small barn and one field. Get a few seeds at the local farmer store and grow your first plants, harvest them and make some money with their fruit.

You will soon notice that farming "by hand" is very slow, hard and non-efficient. So how could you upgrade your business? Get some tools! Usually this would be a hoe, shovel and so on but at CornWars things are different. You need a shotgun to make farmland. Afterwards you can grab a revolver or pistol to shoot seeds into the ground which will makte this action way more efficient. In further game progress you will get even better weapons. Next step would be grabbing a sniper or other more ranged gun. At this point the game will change. You do no longer walk on the field to shoot seeds into the ground but instead get targets at the farm-tiles which you will have to shoot at. They willl then plant seeds in a radius depending on the weapon and a few other factors.

This is the farming-part. Further there will be a multi-functional tank used for e.g. preparing the farmland or shooting bigger ammunition. There will be crafting to put your seeds into bigger ammunition.

We will include bombs and grenades for various tasks. You will be able to call a airplane to "waterbomb" your fields for better growth... This is just a small insight into the game - we do not want to spoiler too much now :)

Also our game will feature different negative effects like diseases, robbery and even some opponents like foreign farmers or insects trying to ruin your harvest which will appear occationally. 

To make the game progress clearer and kind of challenging you will get quests to fullfill. If you need more room for planting you can buy more fields or increase your storage to be able to store more fruits. But after all do not forget to pay your taxes as every square meter will cost taxes.

At the time of writing this text there are already more than 10 different plants, 16 weapons and 5 negative effects as well as a few other events planned. More ideas are added every few days.

Furthermore there will be a quest and achievement system to guide and challenge you through the game.

Timeline and Plans

We are starting over with a clean project (never rely on a jammed code) and are already in development-process. We participated in Ludum Dare 41 Game Jam which is a very well known challenge, happening three times a year (approximately every four months). During this contest we developed "CornWars LD" which is a basic implementation of our idea lacking a huge amount of content and showing slightly different mechanics. Also it has some bugs as in the nature of such a contest you are in a hurry and do not have time for structural plans or changes.

Our target is to get a steam shop page ready until end of may. We hope to be able to start into a first closed alpha round for the main part of the game by November 2018 with our Alpha-Backers (there are limited places available). At this time we will probably still be missing some features like quests and other specials but the whole game mechanic itself should be running. Futhrt we plan to go into full featured (public) Early Access until End of 2018 where full featured means all promised features should be implemented and working, all models and graphics should be ready and we do only need to balance a few things, fix some bugs that may appear and go on with implementing additions.

If the game has great success and that is a requested feature we want to implement some multiplayer support (Co-op farming) The time of this implementation will depend on a few factors and is in no way tied to any date yet.


Gameplay-Targets

People were asking how we plan to bind the player to the game. Why the player should play the game.

  • We already mentioned quests. You will have kind of a story line to play through by quests. Some might return, some won't.
  • Completing quests as well as some other circumstances will give you achievements.
  • There will be a hand full of leaderboards (like average coin gain per hour played or quest statistics)
  • Some quests will be challenges. Those challenges will also be subject for leaderboards.

Showcase

As mentioned we participated in LD41 and this idea comes from the jam. As such we have implemented a slightly differend and very rudimentary version of the basic game logic. You can download and play this for free by clicking here. It is kind of a technical preview of our idea. For example the preview does no contain big differences between revolver and sniper. The cooldowns are a bit nasty...

During development we will occasionally publish news about our progress here on kickstarter as well as do some live streaming sessions where you can ask questions and add your own ideas to improve the game.

Financial plan

The to-be raised funds are planned as follows:

  • 10% Kickstarter and fees
  • 15% licenses
  • 55% location cost (We need to get a coworking space)
  • 10% pledge rewards and other fees (like steam registration, server cost etc.)
  • 10% buffer for buying sound assets, marketing etc

The target of this campaign is the minimal volume of funds needed for us to afford the game development cost as well as to send the rewards out. Together with our own funds we plan to need about 8.000€ for development (without any payouts to ourselves) during the planned period plus three months of buffer.

As you can see we really need some space for working on the project to be able to complete it in a timely and efficient manner.

Of course we are able and willing to add personal funds if we happen to need some more assets later. Furthermore we get some support over patreon and from our twitch subscribers. This also goes directly into the projects funds.

Stretch Goals

We also got a few stretch goals. Please note that the stretch goal contents mitght be delivered after our official release.

10.000€ - Additional content for full backing

This is our stretch goal which will ensure we got some extra buffer and can create some extra content and better marketing.

To thank our backers we will add one fantasy plant which we will plan and design together with our backers. The plant will be a very special and fancy plant with features other plants don't have.

Furthermore we will try our best to implement a few more other plants and contents which might else come in a DLC.

12.500€ - Trading

If we reach a goal of 12.500€ we will implement a trading post where you can offer goods for coins and other players can buy them. This will also add an additional layer of complexity as we will need to implement a higher demand on different items.

15.000€ - Co-Op Farming

If we reach the goal of 15.000€ we will implement a Co-Op Farming mode where you can play together with a friend at the same farm. 

30.000€ - Online-Realtime-Simulation

If we happen reach a goal of 30.000€ we are going to additionally implement a Real-Time online mode where other players could visit your farm and would be able to interact with you to for example fight against you, steal goods, or simply help you out. This is a huge addon as we will also implement features for the players to defend themselves.

Risks and challenges

We are quite new to this business and did not yet bring out a real game.
CornWars is our first serious 3D game project but we had the experience of LD41 and we learned very quick. We are more comfortable with the engine, coding languae and tools from day to day. Alex (me) already had some experience in programming before but not in games-sector. Jan already participated as modeller in two other game projects (by other people) which unfortunately were never released.

We do not have a sound designer at our hands by now but when demand comes up we will eighter grab sound assets from asset stores, get help from a freelancer or talk to Alex' earlier contacts.

We might need to work out a good marketing strategy to make people know about the project. Currently we rely on basic ads and mouth-to-mouth propagation.
