Every day, we lose 50,000 football fields worth of trees, emitting more CO2 into the atmosphere than all cars, planes, trains and ships combined. Less trees also means we can’t turn CO2 into oxygen, exasperating climate change. Meanwhile 40% of Ethiopians live in extreme poverty with limited access to water, food and education.
We're setting out to hire single Ethiopian moms in need to plant a tree every time you eat out, go shopping or do something fun. The app will be free to download, free to use and huge fun. Creating jobs is the most dignified, sustainable and long-term solution for extreme poverty and the atmospheric benefits of planting trees are the same regardless of where we plant them.
We have two years experience running a similar program with a $30 book. We have partners in Ethiopia who've planted 6 million trees. We have hundreds of participating businesses on board with new ones coming on board every day. With your support, we can finish development and bring this project to life.
What's the app like?
Everything meets at least 3 of our 4-point sustainability criteria so you're discovering and supporting local businesses making a positive difference beyond our tree program.
Healthy: You'll find tons of outdoor activities, organic groceries, locavore restaurants... everything you need to live a healthier, more balanced and resourceful way of life.
Community-minded: You'll discover businesses that organize community programs, volunteer their time or make significant charitable contributions.
Planet-friendly: You'll find businesses that participate in the sharing economy, provide eco-friendly alternatives and proactively reduce their footprint.
Local: You'll find indie businesses that help create jobs, increase investment, reduce environmental impact and reduce taxation in your own back yard.
What's your plan?
It all started two years ago with a $30 book we shared with 20,000 people, proving there is both a need and a willing audience. But printing books for each city is expensive, logistically complex and unsustainable. You can be part of turning it into a free app. Together, let's make it easier and more fun for more people to do their share for a better world and live more extraordinary lives.
Our plan is to launch in Vancouver, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle this fall with 15 additional cities coming on board in 2015.
Design is nearly complete, development is underway and we have numerous businesses coming on board each day. We need your support getting the word out to as many people as possible so choose a pledge level and share this campaign with your friends.
Where did this come from?
We all want to make the most out of life… be healthy, happy and make a difference. But sometimes we don’t know what to do or where to start. So we stick with our routine and never break out of the ordinary. We care about issues like poverty and climate change but we seldom do anything about it because it's not part of our routine.
Two and a half years ago my team and I (Julien) became fascinated with the idea of developing tools to help people make healthier, more sustainable lifestyle choices and make a positive difference doing it. I wanted to create a tool for better living in a better world. We've done it in Vancouver. Now we're making it accessible to everyone.
These are exciting times. We're alive in an era of important change. Let's make sure it all turns out well. The future can be extraordinary.
Risks and challenges
Extraordinary is being developed by a team of experienced technologists and creatives passionate about helping people live healthier, more sustainable lives and make a positive difference in the world. Together, we have:
- Founded several ventures
- Developed mobile apps for various Fortune 500 clients
- Designed widely used SAAS applications
- Developed award-winning mobile games
Design is nearly complete, development is underway and we have pre-existing customers, all of which reduces risk. However, until the app is live, there is always a chance of unexpected setbacks. Our technical and PM experience can further reduce this risk.
Two things we're committed to: 1) delivering a truly fantastic product, and 2) transparency and communication with pledgers as we move toward completion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
