Frost Forge Games is proud to introduce Island Fortress, a board game about building a mighty fortress on a harsh and unforgiving island colony populated by rough laborers and hardened convicts. You are among the courageous few who try to use the combined power of these workers to raise a truly impressive stronghold.
A game for 2-4 players, with an expansion for 5-6 players also available.
The Springboard Seal of Quality is your assurance that a new game project is worth your time and attention. Bryan Johnson began designing Island Fortress in early 2005, originally as a game about building the Great Wall of China and was titled, "Huang Di". The game won Cambridge Games Factory's "ProtoSlam" prototype competition at Unity Games (game convention) in August 2006. Two weeks later, Bryan was offered a contract by Cambridge Games Factory to have Huang Di published. In April 2007, shortly before the game was ready to go into production, CGF ran into some difficult times and could not publish Huang Di on schedule, with a very long delay likely. Bryan was given an offer by CGF to freely dissolve the contract, which he exercised.
Within weeks of leaving CGF, Huang Di was picked up by JKLM Games, a game publisher based in London, England. The game went through their development process, received all new artwork and was available for free online play at JKLM's interactive website. After taking preorders for the game, JKLM also hit hard times and went through a very difficult period. During this time, JKLM liquidated the publishing side of the company and became unable to honor the publishing contract as promised and likely wouldn't be able to for a number of years to come. In August 2011, five years after winning the prototype competition and originally agreeing to have his game published, Bryan informed JKLM Games that he would be opting out of their publishing agreement and pulling Huang Di from their line of games.
After leaving JKLM Games and exploring several other options on how to move forward with the game, Bryan decided to self-publish. He re-examined Huang Di with the team at Game Salute, and together they put the game through more playtesting and refinement. Most notably, they gave a fresh new theme to the game, and re-titled it, "Island Fortress". During the game's transition, Bryan founded a new game publishing company called Frost Forge Games. Island Fortress will be the first title released by Frost Forge Games, with an expected release date of 2012.
We are excited about the changes made to the game, and think you will be too. We put the game through extensive playtesting and development and have streamlined a few of the rules for improved gameplay. Island Fortress now has enhanced Favor Cards, additional in-game options such as a fifth role card (instead of just four), introduced "Treasures" as a new scoring option, comes with great new components and has received brilliant new artwork from the very talented, Dann May.
As a token of our appreciation for those folks who have supported this game in previous incarnations, we will be upgrading pledges from Guard level to Explorer level for anyone who had previous preordered and paid for the JKLM version who has not received a refund. While Frost Forge Games is not affiliated with JKLM, we feel this is an important demonstration of our sincere appreciation for those supporters. Simply email Salute@GameSalute.com with your receipt from your JKLM preorder and we'll apply that upgrade to your pledge.
