I have seen so many absolutely gorgeous mermaid pins that it discouraged me from even approaching the subject for quite a while. How could I make something even cooler than what was already out there? What did I have to add as an artist?
The answer came to me while I was designing weapons and armor for an unrelated project. What if there was a mermaid-themed RPG setting? How cool would that be?! Sure, real life hydrodynamics kind of mess things up, but this is FANTASY--it doesn't have to be real!
So with that in mind, I began my task. I liked the idea, but the original pin designs were so detailed and small that you couldn't really see what was going on and the faces were unreadable. I needed them to have bigger heads... A nod to the anime/manga chibi aesthetic was a perfect solution. So I reworked all of them into what you see today!
- is hard enamel.
- is 1.5 inches tall (except for Octo-Die, who is 1.1 inches tall)
- has gold-colored metal plating.
- has two posts/clutches on the back to hold it securely in place and prevent spinning.
The lighter yellow/gold color on the mermaid pins will be recessed metal. This technique allows for a striking end result as the edges catch the light!
Octo-Die - Unlocks with initial funding.
Sea Witch - Unlocks with initial funding.
Black Fathom - Unlocks at $1,000
Deep Defender - Unlocks at $1,300
Tide Breaker - Unlocks at $1,600
Song Warden - Unlocks at $1,900
I did a fair amount of world building while working on this project. I felt it was necessary for me to understand the overall world for which I was creating the pin designs, as well as get an idea of each mermaid's identity. It seemed like a waste to keep all that information to myself, so here is a little bit about each class!
Fun Fact: In this setting all mermaids are direct descendants of royalty; and thus all wear some sort of crown signifying their royal heritage.
Octo-Die is a non-combat pet and friend to GM and PC alike. Always up for a good adventure, he is never seen without 'Old Lucky', his magic d20.
Sea Witches are a combination ranged damage and healing class. They are usually found further away from the main action, weaving the threads of fate into damaging spells for their enemies or life-saving heals for their allies.
Black Fathoms are a high damage, low armor melee damage class. While they would be perfectly happy to stab their enemies in the face, they have learned that it is much safer to sneak around and stab them in the back.
Deep Defenders are the protective force of the party. They can take a beating, thanks to their heavy armor and shields, all the while keeping the focus of the fight on themselves through a variety of threatening and taunting tactics.
Tide Breakers are a combination melee damage and support class. Typically at home in the fray, Tide Breakers deal devastating damage with large two-handed weapons and boost their allies' stats through inspiration talents.
Song Wardens are a ranged support class with a musical flair. They tend to hang in back, boosting their parties' stats while lowering those of their opponents with the magic songs of the deep. At level 5 they can become a combination melee damage class through the 'Enchant Creature' talent.
My name is Joshua R. Pinkas and I am the creator and owner of Frost Dragon Designs, LLC. After years of working on projects for others through freelance work and private commissions, I decided to start building something for myself and started Frost Dragon Designs.
I am a seasoned pin creator and have designed, had manufactured, and delivered hundreds of beautiful enamel pins. All of my designs are my own original creations. I start my creative process with traditional drawings in sketchbooks. Even the simplest of designs will usually go through a dozen or more revisions before I recreate it digitally and prepare the files to send to my manufacturers.
I love launching new projects on Kickstarter because this is where I got my start with my company, and because I have found a wonderfully supportive community here who genuinely care about creatives.
Risks and challenges
I am a designer, not a manufacturer, so I have to trust my manufacturer to execute my designs at a high level and on time. There could be production issues that are beyond my control that could impact the delivery date. Also minor changes in the design may occur to prevent manufacturing problems, but these will only be made if it is absolutely necessary and every effort will be made to preserve the original aesthetic.
Additionally, though shipping logistics could always potentially be a problem, I have reliably shipped hundreds of pins via USPS.
If any issues arise I will be sure to notify backers.
Please note that everyone's monitors display images a little differently. The colors shown for the pins may vary slightly when compared to the pins in person.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
