About

When we first started Bright Side over a year ago, we simply wanted to highlight stories of immigrant artists who were making a difference in America. However, as we interviewed more and more of these beautiful, radiant, kick-ass creatives, we discovered that many of them have had to overcome the same kinds of challenges. We realized that most people only saw the success of these superstars, without understanding the trials they went through to get to where they are. We wanted to give U.S. citizens a glimpse into what it truly means to be an immigrant these days, but in a brief and eye-catching way.

That’s why we teamed up with Pilar Torcal, a stellar Brooklyn-based illustrator from Barcelona, to produce a set of cards, each one telling a different side of the immigrant experience.

Our aim is to raise enough money to print 4,000 copies of our 25-card set -- 100.000 individual cards in total (including the reward cards)--and leave them in mailboxes, coffee shops, and everywhere else we can stuff a card, all in order to reach everyday people.

We decided to call the project “From immigrants,” because think of each one as its own love letter to the people of the United States, from immigrants. ♥︎

Check out our website for more illustrations and see what they stand for!

With anti-immigrant sentiment on the rise in the United States, we believe there has never been a more important time to share this message.

Our hope is that these cards will help to spread a sense of empathy, an understanding of where immigrants are coming from and what they hope to achieve. We want our cards and stickers to fill cities with a vibrancy of life and color, just like its immigrants do.

The fight against xenophobia is a tough one, but we want to prove that in the end, a little understanding can go a long way.

Your reward cards are exactly that: your reward. As such, you can do whatever you’d like with them! You can keep them as your own, or if you feel so inclined you can join our mission by spreading them wherever you go.

Whether it be your office, the coffee shop down the street, or on the other side of the country, you can bring your cards with you and leave them anywhere that you feel the message needs to be shared.

Just make sure to take a snap and use the hashtag #fromimmigrants so we can see just how far these cards have traveled.

Our goal is to have these cards show up everywhere in the United States, but to start off we’re happy just spreading them in areas with high immigrant populations (think New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami).

Once we’re fully funded, we’ll have our volunteers spread these cards in some of these major cities, but we’d love for these cards to travel even further.

As we said, make sure to use the hashtag #fromimmigrants to let us know if you bring these cards to a new place.

Our Kickstarter campaign is just the beginning of our project. After we are successfully funded, we will start working on the second round of our campaign. Here's what's next:

  • Notebook

  • From Immigrants Book with all of our illustrations
  • From Immigrants translated into different languages (we will pick the languages based on the country's immigrant population, such as Germany, Turkey, Spain)

  • Outdoor advertising
  • And finally, a wall with our most loved illustrations. YES. WE ARE GOING TO BUILD A WALL AND IT'S GOING TO BE A BIG, FAT, BEAUTIFUL WALL!

Show us your support and we will keep creating eye-catching campaigns to show how kickass the immigrants are.

The United States has long been a haven for the creative. Every year, thousands of artists come here from all corners of the globe to test their mettle and see if they can achieve their dreams in a new and unfamiliar land. Some are searching for new experiences, others opportunities, and some still are seeking the challenge of starting a whole new life.

But what is it about the United States, out of all the countries in the world, that keeps drawing people in? At Bright Side, we believe there is power in diversity. The brightest lights are made up of every color, and just like that our society shines that much brighter when people from every walk of life are included. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we appreciate the contributions that each culture has to offer and recognize the tremendous things we can achieve when working together.

Bright Side aims to foster that spirit of unity by taking a closer look at the stories of creatives who have immigrated to the United States in pursuit of their dreams, overcoming any and all obstacles in order to enrich our society.

Together, we can all learn to look on the Bright Side.

And special thanks to all of the amazing people who fearlessly shared their immigration experiences with us. Without their input and willingness to contribute to our project, we absolutely wouldn't be able to bring this project to life. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!

Risks and challenges

There is minimal risk at this stage of production that we can foresee. Every aspect of the cards and rewards has been thought out in detail and we can't wait to deliver these illustrations.

We've worked with our print partner on previous projects and we have a great working relationship. The only unexpected challenge that could arise during the actual printing of the cards might be the unprevented delays due to the extensive amount of the order. However, it should take no more than 3 weeks, and we believe we have enough buffer in the month of July to cover any unexpected delays and still deliver on time.

That being said, if any issues arise during the production of the cards or rewards that push the delivery date of your pledge back, we will be transparent as possible and update you accordingly. Thank you very much for your help.

Whether you have pledged or helped to spread the word, your support means a lot!
