NOTE 3: BIG UPDATE!!! OVERFUNDING GOAL!
This will go out as an update to all backers, as well, but I wanted to put this up front so new people see that additional support will still help greatly, as the total costs of this project is far above our $4k Kickstarter target!
Of course, you might just back us because you want to play with fire effects on the playa -- or because you want one of these sweet Runway lights as a lamp. BUT we also want to show our over-funding appreciation by offering every backer at $15 or above an official Frogma Sticker (see the green and yellow frog logo on our profile) if we hit $5,000.
Nothing big, we know - but we want to keep showing our love and appreciation. Thanks to all our current and potential backers!! See you out there!
NOTE 2: We are adding a reward to the $125 levels and higher. They will now include a turn at the fire controls!

The Frogma Art Collective:
In 2009, our art team brought a piece called Spark to the playa http://bit.ly/18LvCx0– a two thousand pound, 800,000,000 candle power, WWII search light. One of the brightest man-made light sources in history – trapped inside a mysterious cube, and illuminating acres of deep playa from mirrors in the sky.
In 2011, we created Perspectives http://bit.ly/18Q3k81– 35 giant children’s blocks, from 6” to 12’ in size – precisely arranged over 1,000,000 square feet of desert. When a participant stood at one of 4 Perspectives, the blocks lined up reveal hidden messages. (successful Kickstarter! http://kck.st/nvvikp.)
In 2013, we’re building The Runway http://bit.ly/1bH0G5z (inspired by the Burning Man art theme: Cargo Cult, though with a high tech flare).
- It will be 800 feet long.
- It will be lined with 84 vintage, cobalt blue runway lights – powered by computer controlled LEDs.
- It will have 40 propane flame poofers in line – controlled and sequenced by the same system.
- It will all be powered via Raspberry Pi, through an iPad interface with awesome pre-set tracers, patterns, and undulating beauty – as well as the ability for the controller to run her/his finger across the screen and modulate the patterns live.
- It will have a multi-level Art Traffic Control Tower from which the system will be run, and from which we will clear Mutant Vehicles for take off down The Runway.
- It will have uniformed, flash-light holding, dancing Runway Directors, guiding the experience from the ground.
- It will all be solar powered (except for the propane, of course), to reduce our footprint.
- It will look thematically appropriate and interesting during the day; active and dazzling at night with the light and fire shows we have planned.
- At this size, it will be visible from across much of the open playa.
We are really excited about this project, and we are striving to make this a wonderful piece for all Burning Man participants.
But we need your help.
As you can see from the photos and videos below, we’ve completed a great deal of the technical side of this project. We’ve gone through extensive testing, programming, and LED sequencing to get the lighting effects set and ready. We’ve put months of effort into propane plumbing and fire construction. We’ve flown to Tulsa to buy vintage runway lights. We’ve designed and started construction on the control tower, costumes, solar power and battery bank array, and other infrastructure.
And, we're excited to report that the 1st of 4 quadrants is ready to go! On the technical side, we are in the home stretch! Now, with 4 weeks remaining, we have to procure all the hardware to build the last 3 quadrants.
That’s why we're talking to you – reaching out to raise the funding to take this project to its finished state out in the Black Rock Desert, just under one month from now.
Frogma and our friends have all put countless hours into this labor of love. We hope you get as excited about it as we are. If so, look to the right, and figure out which funding level makes sense to you.
Not only will you help make art happen, you could get anything from a postcard, to one of these lights to keep as a working lamp in your home – or if you’re interested, even learn about propane fire art construction from us and go home with your own flame poofer.
We will continue to post photos below of the details of our project and construction. Come back for build updates, new videos, and progress highlights!
Thanks so much for your time!
Risks and challenges
We have been waiting to launch this Kickstarter campaign until we were absolutely positive this project would work. Fortunately, that means we have solved all the technical problems associated with this project. We have built one full quadrant of the flame, and proved that the system will work. We've tested the LEDs, photo sensors, solenoid valves, and our software control system will work.
However, as you probably know, conditions out in the Black Rock Desert are not the friendliest - and testing here in civilization does not guarantee we won't run into problems when we install out at Burning Man. That said, our team of amazing artists, engineers, and staff is experienced and have a track record of huge, bold, successful on-playa art installations.
One of the biggest risks for the donor experience would be if we have a malfunction on the night that you are scheduled to have your time running the lights and/or fire. In that situation, we would do our best to reschedule your award.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
