About

For years now Frog Night Games has been working on The Light RPG. Until today we were not sure on which setting we wished to launch the system with. Now we present to you: SuburbPunk

The SuburbPunk core setting book, in B&W PDF form, will be made available for free on our website no later than May 31st, 2019. The setting book will be completely system agnostic, and designed for easy reference while playing a game in this world.

The final printed book will be Digest size (8.5in x 5.5in) and the exact page count will be determined by the amount of support this project receives, though our initial estimate is 40-80 pages of text (i.e. not counting the art). Also it will be B&W and saddle-stitched. Hey! Its a zine. #ZineQuest

Your support of this project will allow us to allocate time from our normal work in order to write, proof and format the setting book, as well as any additional books that are unlocked as stretch goals.

Growing up in the 90's by Mikal Saltveit

I was first introduced to Dungeons and Dragons through the AD&D players handbook and the Mystara First Quest boxed set. Included in that set was a CD which explained how the game was played. You can listen to it here. Growing up, that was how my friends and I imagined it would be played. As we learned the rules, reality sunk in, and for a time we did enjoy ourselves. But that vision, portrayed to me through that first audio clip, never really left my mind.

The Light RPG has very simple rules, which makes it easy to pick up and learn. You will be able to start playing almost immediately, as long as all the players are familiar with the setting and its rules. A complete explanation of the rules will be found in the back of all setting books.

In a traditional role playing game, the GM is the sole arbiter of truth and reality. In this game, the players take turns narrating what happens, while the GM sits and listens. In fact, all of the players must listen intently, for to know what comes next, you must know what came before.

Suddenly, the GM strikes with a single word. "Danger" he cries, and the assembled players shiver in anticipation. Having described the danger, the interrupted player must now explain how they not only engage the danger, but overcome it completely. The narration of the back and forth of blows is fully in the purview of the interrupted player.

A game of chance is played, involving fingers and blindfolds, and fortune is determined, for weal or woe. The player's talents come into play here, allowing them to double their chance of good fortune if they can explain to the GM how it aids in resolving the danger. Good fortune allows play to continue as though it had never been interrupted.

If the fortune is bad, the GM may impose one negative consequence on the player: Taking away an item, causing an injury, etc. In general these consequences prevent specific player actions. A "damage track" along the bottom of every character card tracks how often consequences actually occur.

One final rule is of key importance, any player can veto any other players actions as being outside of the setting and its rules. The burden of keeping the story on track falls to all who sit around the table to play.

The year is 2006, just a few short years after a Y2K bug in a government computer set off a chain reaction that destroyed most of the continental United States and flooded the rest of the world. The only major cities left standing were San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles.

The world as we know it is now a massive megacity of suburbs connecting these aging metropolises. Each street dedicated to a tv show or movie from the 90's. A symptom of the general populations inability to let go of their past glory.

Join us as we explore this strange new reality, where the 90's never really ended, and the Friends all died in a nuclear blast while doing an appearance in Chicago. Except for Phoebe, we could never do that to her.

We have so many exciting things we want to do with SuburbPunk beyond the core setting book and The Light RPG physical accessories. New and exciting player characters will be added at specific milestones (see Player Characters below), and will be incorporated into all rewards. Other stretch goals will be listed here as they are revealed and unlocked.

$1500 - Adventures in Suburbia. 🔒

A system neutral adventure supplement will be produced for the SuburbPunk setting and made available to all backers for free. The delivery of this book will be some time after the setting book is completed, in order to not interfere with the delivery of that book.

$2000 - In Living Color 🔒

The art inside the setting book and all supplements will be available in both color and black and white.

??? - More to come!

More stretch goals will be revealed as the campaign progresses.

All backers at the $10 level or higher will receive a plastic character card for each of the three main characters, as well as any character unlocked through stretch goals.
NOTE: Color character art is incoming! Be amazed, be excited! Be zombo.com.

Risks and challenges

The largest risk in this project is related to art. Our key artist will be moving at the end of February and, depending on how that goes, may be unavailable for the entire month of March. The worst case is losing that artist and having to find a new one. It will take no longer than a month to find a new artist.

To make sure the development of the book is not hindered by physical rewards, we are giving a whole month of time between when we finish the PDF and we begin shipments.

In order to ensure that shipments go out on time, we are limiting physical copies to 50 copies each month. While we may end up shipping more, that number will allow us to deliver on all promised goals.

Having been burned by shipping costs before, we will charge shipping after the campaign. You pay exactly what it will cost to deliver the package from us to you, however far away you may be or large the package ends up being. We will have a rough table of estimated prices for different destinations and backer levels in Update #5. Expect $2-5 for USA deliveries. We are located in Los Angeles so use that to calculate international shipping.
