This will be the second graphic novel by Tom Smith and Katie Whittle from independant comic label Frisson Comics following on from the success of Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints which was Kickstarted successfully earlier this year.
The Trade follows the story of Serena, an enigmatic young woman who meets our second protagonist, Alice, in a bar one evening. After taking a liking to one another the pair take off into the night as the tragic, horrific, poignant and occasionally humorous story of Serena's life is slowly revealed over the course of the evening.
As with our last project we are very keen not to give away too much of the plot as we believe that the fun of the story is for the reader to discover Serena's story for their self. What we will say is that the story is our take on a classical horror genre and touches upon issues such as loss, morality, illness and even a touch of romance. While it is primarily a horror tale we focus as much upon the drama and experiences of our protagonist as we attempt to portray the human side to characters which may not be.
In our work we are very much interested in creating strong, complex and diverse characters that express and inspire a broad range of emotions. It is something that we believe that we have accomplished with this book.
As with all our work this is a passion project of ours and as such we are only asking for funding for the cost of the initial print run of the book, any extra money we make will go towards stretch goal rewards for our backers:
As with last time we are offering badge packs and posters to all our physical backers at the £1000 stretch goal tier. Here is an example of what our backers received for our last project:
Yea re aiming to produce even cooler rewards this time round at a similarly high quality!
As with our last Kickstarter we are offering A5 commissions in watercolour and inks by Katie of whatever you like! Here is an example of some of the commissions produced last time and the quality to expect:
We are offering a limited number of 15 of commissions for this Kickstarter.
The art will be hand drawn throughout the comic using a semi brush and dip pen then treated digitally. We do this to give the work a unique, organic visual style that reflects the story and gives the reader a more tactile experience.
We aim to finish the project with a high quality 80 page one-shot Graphic Novel, if by some good fortune we reach our £2000 pound stretch goal we will give the extra option of upgrading your book to a luxurious hardback edition. If we are successfully funded we will be debuting this book at Thought Bubble Festival 2016 as well as taking it to future conventions to sell while we work on our next book 'The Circus is in Town' by Thomas Kelly.
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter after our first graphic novel was successfully funded earlier this year. The risk potential for this project is fairly low, as the only costs we need to cover is the cost of an initial print run of 150 copies of the book (possibly more if we reach stretch goals). At of the time of the Kickstarter launch the story is 100% written and pencilled and almost 50% inked and lettered by Katie. Then all we need to do is digitally clean up the pages and then we are ready to go!
The only potential setbacks that we can foresee are the unlikely events of either personal or family emergencies, which at worst, we believe, would only temporarily delay rather than cancel the release of the book.
We will keep everyone thoroughly informed of our via Kickstarter updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
