About the Film
His Wikipedia pages reads:
Jimmy Mack, The Black Hulk Hogan, Papa Smurf, Santa Claus on Venus and Rambo, is a martial arts instructor, former postal worker, Vietnam War veteran, perennial candidate, and political activist from Brooklyn, New York. He is best known as the founder of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, a New York-based political party. McMillan has run for office at least six times since 1993, including in the New York gubernatorial election, 2010 on the "Rent Is 2 Damn High" line.
...Just this paragraph makes him a documentarian's dream come true.
We knew that this man had a story to tell, no matter what and contacted Jimmy weeks before the election. We quickly established a trusting relationship with Jimmy were granted exclusive, unprecedented access to Jimmy’s life and documented every step he took from then until the elections. We were part of Jimmy’s political/celebrity life and were able to chronicle the rise of his fame and the development of a 64 year old fringe politician into a national known celebritican.
What started over twenty years ago with one man quickly evolved into a cult of personalities and a team of lawyers and advisors helping shape Jimmy’s path. We had perfect timing as they witnessed the transformation and culmination of one mans two decade long dream.
The film, DAMN!, titled after the word that truly stands out in the name of party and was removed from by the election board of New York only to be reinstated after a “350 million dollar law suite,” begins to examine how people change as their level of notoriety and celebrity rapidly grow, their dreams become reality, and the how the media and modern day politics play an integral role in this transformation. We meet the people who come (and go) during this process and witness, first hand one man’s struggle to simultaneously stay in the public’s eye and stay true to his message and personality that got him there in the first place.
Who is taking advantage of who? Is Jimmy a marketing genius or just lucky? Where does the truth end and public image take over in today’s digital world? How does instant fame affect people who have long lost the hope of being famous at all? Is this just how Jimmy planned it? Have 15 minutes of fame been digitized to a mere 5?
Will Jimmy get the 50,000 votes needed to legitimize his party and can Jimmy hold on to his stardom...and which is more important to this man?
But perhaps beyond all the story lines Jimmy is a unique charismatic character with an amazing life story, and DAMN! captures this.
Teasers for DAMN!
From the Filmmakers: We are two filmmakers working on our first feature length film who came upon the rare opportunity to capture a man's journey to international stardom by way of the political party called The Rent Is Too Damn High - party. On October 18th the now famous debate of New York's Gubernatorial candidates took place and we all know what happened, the world was introduced to Jimmy McMillan.
We have over 40 hours of footage, (and continue to shoot) and have serious interest from distribution companies, but we need to edit the film before anything. We know we have the makings of an amazing story, film, and work of art, but need to raise at least $10,000 in order to get the equipment, space and time needed to truly see this through, in the smartest way possible.
We have worked hard to capture this man's story and will be making this film either way, but with your support, we can make it a reality in the timely fashion that is calls for. We anticipate releasing the film at SxSw in March of 2011. Help us, won't you?
