North Wars: The Martian Conquest is a PAY WHAT YOU WANT high fantasy/sci-fi RPG powered by FATE and set in a world loosely inspired by the 1964 "classic" "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians".
The printed book will be 6"x9" and in FULL COLOR with an estimated 52+ pages of content. This will include gameplay rules, character examples, character classes with race descriptions, aspects, and stunts, a "Twas The Fight Before Christmas" adventure, monsters, villains, NPCs, and full color illustrations. The book is modeled after the popular "Fate Adventures & Worlds" series from the fine folks at Evil Hat Productions. (If you want to see more about those - click here.)
So before we dive in too deep -- let's answer a few common questions...
Q. IS THIS A JOKE?
A. No. We're totally serious.
A. Yes. Really.
Okay! Now that's we've gotten that out of the way -- let's talk about the world of North Wars!
In North Wars you play as either a Human, an Elf, a Yeti, a Frost Spirit, or even an Enchanted Creature of your own design -- who are defending The North, as well as the rest of the world from an ongoing Martian Invasion.
The North Wars mythology dates back to the early civilization of man...as humanity pulled itself kicking and screaming out of the Dark Ages, magic was banished from the world. Searching for solace and survival, the remaining elven people, and the humans who loved them, ventured towards the mountains into the frosty air of The North.
Here, the elves and humans began a new life -- but it was not without peril. While safe from the members of humanity who would do them harm, the elf/human allies soon found that they had new challenges to face in The North -- in the form of a powerful race of Yetis, and mischievous Frost Spirits, among others. At first - there was war for survival in The North.
Then Nicholas was born.
Nicholas brought peace to The North - and devised a plan to keep enough magic in the world for he and all the creatures of this frozen wonderland to survive for eternity.
Once every year, on the day when the barrier between the world of men and magic was at its thinnest -- Nicholas would venture out into the Worlds of Man and deliver presents to the children -- a feat that could be accomplished in one night in no other way - but through magic.
For hundreds of years this continued -- magic flowed through The North, and there was peace...but little did they know...
The Martian people have been forced underground of millennia, but their resources are running low -- and Mars can no longer sustain them. Looking towards their closest neighboring world - Earth - the leaders of Mars form a plan.
The area at the top of the world known as "The North" is an area of interest to them. It seems different from the rest of the planet. After close inspection they discover Castle North, Nicholas, his people, and his yearly mission.
"What better way to conquer a world?", they think. "Than to enter their homes in their sleep, and instead of leaving toys -- leave soldiers to greet them at dawn!"
The plan seems clear -- infiltrate The North. Defeat Nicholas and his people. Take their sleigh - and their magic bag - and fill it with an invading army to over throw the world in a single night!
...must take on the role of one of the defenders of The North...either as a character of your own creation, or even as St. Nicholas himself...stop the Martian invasion at any cost...and ensure the annual Christmas journey takes place!
So -- who can you play as?
- Frost Spirits
- Enchanted Creatures
Whether as a noble Human, a cunning Elf, a warrior Yeti, a magical Frost Spirit, or a potty mouthed Enchanted Creature -- North Wars is filled with interesting options for defending the world from a Martian Onslaught.
Enchanted Creatures in particular can be anything from a talking teddy bear who happens to be an expert with knives...to a reindeer who has a chip on his shoulder and an Earl Grey tea addiction...the sky is the limit!
The game comes with pre-generated characters based on the graphics here, allowing you to play as St. Nicholas, and any of the other signature heroes...including...
In the world of North Wars Krampus is a key player -- he is the half brother of St. Nicholas -- a unique Yeti/Human hybrid -- the result of a torrid affair between Nicholas' mother and the Yeti King. When his mother died giving birth to him, Krampus was taken into the frozen wilderness to die...there he was raised for a time by Frost Spirits, eager to see what kind of chaos his survival might bring to the then warring people of The North.
In adulthood Krampus made himself known to Nicholas, the Yeti King, and all others in The North when he began terrorizing bad children on the night of Nicholas' ride.
At first they believed him to be an inhuman monster, but eventually discovered that Krampus' goals were not to harm the children -- but to set them down the right path...correct their bad behavior...and help them to have the one thing he never could...a family that loves them.
Bitter and angry, Krampus still lives in the frozen wilderness and keeps to himself -- but in the war against the Martian Invaders he could be a powerful ally for your fellowship.
Amazing Artists Ken Hunt and Ross Hughes have already completed pages and pages of beautiful art for North Wars! Will they make any more? That's totally up to you and our stretch goals -- but take a look at some of the fine art you'll see IN FULL COLOR here on the campaign page and in our backer updates throughout the campaign!
PAY WHAT YOU WANT!
With "North Wars" you can pay whatever you like for the books - starting at $1 for digital and $6 + shipping for print!
Why $6 + shipping for print? Because that's what it costs us to print the book and ship it to you!
If things get funded in time we do have some exciting ideas for stretch goals and add-ons as well - including custom dice...BUT...we shall have to wait and see how this goes before we can talk anymore about it!
So tell your friends! Also your enemies! Even acquaintances and strangers would be good! Just tell everyone!
Every backer level will also come with Instant Access to the "North Wars" Christmas Card PDF files! You'll get a print-ready PDF that you can print at home, or even take to your local FedEX or Staples and have printed (permission is granted on the secondary page of the PDF so you shouldn't have any trouble if you do) - and templates for vistaprint.com have also been included in case you want to go crazy and wish all your friends and family a MIGHTY CHRISTMAS this year!
This reward level will allow you to name one of the four Outlaw Reindeer characters featured in the game. Plus you will receive the game in print as well as digitally with all stretch goals.
Here's a little more about the Outlaw Reindeer...
These enchanted creatures were given sentience to serve as reserve member’s of St. Nicholas’ sleigh crew, but unlike the other Reindeer on the team, this quartet rejected stable life and began expressing their distaste with captivity via violent outbursts. Once their case had been heard by Nicholas himself, they were released into the wild to live as they saw fit. They will often rob travelers for supplies or attack other creatures for sport. They are not aligned with any one group, but can be hire hooves for the right price.
There are two additional items you can add-on to your "North Wars" pledge -- take a look...
The fine folks at chessex have put together some custom dice for us for North Wars and they look fantastic! Here's a peak at them...
The dice feature snowflakes taking the "+" spot of a FATE die and martian spaceships as the "-" spot.
The great thing about Chessex is that these are completely custom -- and they can make as little as one order of them -- which would be 4 dice.
If we were to reach far beyond our initial goal then we could have these things mass produced, but I think it's more likely that we'll stay in the niche/cult market here and hopefully hit our goal...but I doubt we'll get into the area where we'd need 1,000 of these mass produced.
Because these are custom, made to order, dice they are expensive compared to a mass produced dice.
A set of 4 would come to the total of $20 -- with each die being custom cut and colored for you here in the good ole USA.
They can be shipped with your print order - so there would be no need for additional shipping charges if you have already backed at the print level. If you're backing at the digital level you'll need to include another $5 for shipping of the dice.
So - $20 for print - $25 for digital - and you can have these dice as an add-on regardless of how many orders we get for them. Just to be clear this would be for 4 custom dice.
Those are, again, our at cost prices - we're not making a dime on those at this level - but I'm hoping that if we can offer these some of you might like them and be encouraged to back the game at a little higher level so we can get this thing over the line and into production!
A few of you have asked if it was possible to get our first game, "Grim - A Roll For Your Life Dice Game" as an add-on to your North Wars pledge.
The answer to that is YES! If you'd like a copy of Grim you can add it to your pledge for $25 -- that will include shipping in the US -- all international orders will need to add an additional $5 for shipping for a total of $30.
Now, GRIM has customs friendly shipping and will be shipped early next year from our fulfillment partner on that game.
I have included an image below to give you an idea about Grim if you aren't familiar with it -- but you can find the full details on the campaign page.
The retail version of the game, which is what you would be ordering, includes both Grim and the Expansion "Grim Decisions".
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge from a scheduling point of view will be making sure that we have good communication with our printers, and that product is produced in the time window they have provided. We feel very confident that this will be the case.
The first draft of the book is complete and currently being compiled in InDesign as this campaign begins.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
