Estimated Battery Life
The 100 mAh batteries in each device are expected to last 6-8 hours between charges, depending on the settings for frequency of fitness testing, and recharge in approximately 1 hour. This compares to 3-4 hours reported by other ear wearable fitness devices. Using normal charging practices, your 100 mAh battery should last over 3 years.
Risks and challenges
FreeWavz uses Commercial Off-the-Shelf (“COTS”) Bluetooth technology with normal range and connectivity limitations. Our design maximizes antenna placement to optimize signal performance and customer satisfaction, but Bluetooth is subject to interference from other devices that operate in the same radio frequency.
The team has extensive experience in hardware and embedded software integration, and extensive medical expertise in the operation of a pulse oximeter; however, we may encounter results that require additional calibration and refinement to produce the desired degree of accuracy.
FreeWavz uses certain key components that are only available from limited manufacturers. If those manufacturers were to discontinue production of these components, it would potentially cause some redesign and a delay in our launch.

We have a working prototype in the final go-to-market form factor. Our founder and inventor, Ear, Nose & Throat Dr. Eric Hensen, gets that question quite frequently in the office with patients naturally concerned about the wear of glasses with other hearing devices, so we kept that in mind when we designed FreeWavz. The thin, flexible neck around the top of the ear allows adjustment for a tighter or looser fit around the ear and the ability to comfortably accommodate eyeglasses or sunglasses.
Several reasons. First, as our medical experts, ENT Dr. Eric Hensen and Au.D. & Board Certified Audiologist, Dr. Leslie K. Rosegger, have advised, the “earbud” area of the ear is highly variable in size and shape and will not provide a secure fit. Second, we have packed each device with electronics and 100 mAh batteries for longer life, which are more efficiently spread around the ear, providing a naturally comfortable weight balance (like sunglasses resting on the ear). Third, the antenna, which provides wirefree connectivity between the two devices, is optimized if located behind the ear. Fourth, it allows positioning of the voice microphone below the ear, closest to the mouth, but shielded from wind by the ear compared to other devices that use bone conduction. As noted by a senior researcher for a speech recognition company, “We’ve been testing bone and throat microphones for years and unfortunately they do not work well for speech recognition…”
Despite suggestions by other wireless products that you can use their devices in the water, water heavily attenuates the signal in certain frequency ranges and will likely result in poor performance. Thus, FreeWavz are not designed for swimming; however, they are sealed with a rubber overmold and are sweat and water resistant.
The Bluetooth Core Specification range for class 2 Bluetooth devices is 10 meters or 32 feet; however, there are several variable in the range of Bluetooth reception that could extend or disrupt the range of signal. In general, your controlling FreeWavz device would need to be within this range to connect to your source device and the other FreeWavz device would need to be within this range if you are sharing with others.

Yes. And you can choose whether to pair to the left or right (and as noted above, you can share the other with a friend).
Can I use one FreeWavz and listen to my player while someone else uses the other FreeWavz and listens to their player?
Yes. Another benefit of FreeWavz is that they can be used independently. Each user would need to elect to pair to their respective device (left or right ear) when pairing from their source device. In that case, both users will be able to utilize the fitness monitoring features of the FreeWavz.
Based on calls made with our pre-production prototype, the voice reception is so clear, listeners can't tell we are on FreeWavz Bluetooth headsets.
We will be continuing to release new features that you can upload into your FreeWavz. We will not charge for features that enhance existing capabilities as a fitness wearable device. We would only charge for substantial new capabilities. For instance, if we developed the capability to do two-way language translation (each party wears one and it translates into your/their native language) using your existing hardware, that would be considered a substantial new capability.

Yes, FreeWavz incorporates a 3-axis accelerometer that is already incorporated into the electronic board assembly (which is done and machine-assembled). It is used for steps and distance calculations and can also be used in the future for acceleration, cadence, drop rate, and time at rest and in motion.
FreeWavz are manufactured in Melbourne, Florida, USA, across the street from our offices and close to our engineers to ensure the highest quality production. Virtually all the components are sourced in the USA.
