My name is Mike E. G. and I wrote a book called The Mysticist, which I plan to publish through my publishing company, FreemadeSF, in March 2014.
It’s a cyberpunk coming of age tale--what might have happened if Philip K. Dick wrote On The Road and set it in the year 2054.
I’m really excited for you to check it out!
In The Mysticist, America is now AmeriCorp. Everything is incorporated and commodified. Private border guards patrol the boundaries of most major cities, where the rich stockpile scarce resources while the poor are being shipped off to work camps in the Arctic or conscripted into colonial missions to Mars. Rumors abound that autonomous communities called "freeholds" are popping up beyond the frayed edges of civilization.
One brutally hot summer, Niirs Tla and his Companions set out on a journey by bike across drought-ravaged Texas. Most of the Companions are in search of nothing more than good times, but Niirs is on the run. Pursued by nightmarish creatures, alien visitors, and a shape-shifting cop, Niirs soon realizes that he cannot simply run away--he needs somewhere to run to.
In the book, Niirs and one of the Companions, Mat, spend a night working on an album they call Beating the Drum of the Deathless. So I wrote and recorded 15 original songs, and am incorporating them into the novel as the album the characters were working on. Each chapter will share a title with one of the songs, and that song will be used to help set the scene via its incorporation into the ebook.
Check out FreemadeSF.com for more info and to hear a couple of the songs (the same songs that are featured in the video above), or listen to them right here:
The Mysticist is more than a novel.
It’s intended to be experienced as an interactive ebook. Just like films use music to set the mood and more fully transport you into their world, I’m trying to create a new, more immersive way for you to experience my writing by incorporating a soundtrack, a series of original illustrations, and other interactive elements to tell a different kind of story than you’ve read before.
If you’d like to support this project, all I’m asking is that you pre-purchase a copy of The Mysticist today. The ebook is the way I intend for you to experience the novel, but I also have contribution levels that include:
- Hard copies of The Mysticist (if you don’t want all the music and illustrations)
- Downloads of the album, Beating the Drum of the Deathless
- 7” vinyl records of a single from the album
- T-shirts of my publishing company, FreemadeSF
- And all kinds of other cool rewards!
I'll use the funds I raise from pre-sales of The Mysticist to pay my ebook developer, typesetter, copyeditor, and illustrators. Whatever is left over will help defray costs of mixing and mastering Beating the Drum of the Deathless (while the album was entirely written and recorded in my home studio, I will get it professionally mixed and mastered), plus printing of the books, pressing of the 7" records, and shipping costs.
Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter! If you can’t afford to pre-purchase a copy of The Mysticist right now, tweets and Facebook posts are super helpful as well!
Thank you for any and all support you can give.
Risks and challenges
I am attempting to do everything myself, in so far as possible. But when it comes to things like developing the ebook, typesetting the book, and other design-related items, I do not have the skills to do it right. So those are the pieces I'm basically sub-contracting out. I have amazing people to work with, people whose talents I am very confident in--and, even better, they are stoked to work on this project. But because they will be at least partially contributing their time (I plan to pay them out of the money I raise via this Kickstarter, but I still can't afford their typical rates), I may have delays in the publication process as I navigate their busy schedules. I am confident that I can get the novel + album finished and delivered by April 2014--but I need your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
