About this project
Thanks to all the backers who made this project successful! Stay tuned to our progress at TheGreatFredini.com!
Coney Island Scan-A-Rama is an art project to scan and produce 3D printed portraits of the masses of people who visit America’s playground: Coney Island. Visitors to the portrait studio will come in to get a 3D portrait taken and then a full body 3D figurine of them will be included in a 2014 installation recreating a fully populated model of Coney Island, New York’s Luna Park as it stood 100 years ago!
Unlike other 3D scanning services out there that add scans of a face to an existing body model, we have devised custom hardware and a workflow to create perfect full body 3D scans that can be ready for 3D printing in minutes. At the end of this campaign, our hardware will be made open source.
Why are we Kickstarting?
I’ve spent the last two years completely obsessing with everything to do with 3D printing and scanning. I’ve built two kit 3D printers; I was a backer on Brook Drumm’s original Printrbot Kickstarter and a SeeMeCNC Rostock Max Delta printer backer on IndieGoGo. Since then, I’ve also acquired a second hand Makerbot Replicator 1, which is now my standard printer for these portraits. But I have two kids; one in college, the other a high school senior. I can’t afford to realize this project without bringing it to you, Kickstarters. I know that the time is right for a 3D portrait studio, but I need your help to realize it!
Rewards for Kickstarters
First and foremost, this project is for anyone who wants to get a 3D portrait made of themselves- It could be a performer or someone in a fantastical cosplay costume, friends wanting to remember one another, a couple in love who want a cake topper for their wedding, or who want to remember what it was like being nine months pregnant, parents wanting to remember their kids when they are small or children wanting to remember their aging parents... the reasons people want to capture themselves are endless. A 3D figurine captures people’s physicality in a way no photo ever will and it’s a permanent physical remembrance of that time.
The project also appeals to 3D printing and scanning enthusiasts because I will be publishing the plans for my rig and sharing the technique and workflow that I’ve developed to generate these scans with the 3D community. I want to share back to the community that has been so generous to me with their information. If you’re a 3D enthusiast, please consider funding the sharing of this information.
Lastly, this project appeals to Coney Island history fans. I have an extensive collection of imagery from Luna Park and will be doing the best I can to translate these images into 3D models of the park. The final installation of the park and will be put on display in Coney Island in 2014.
Booster - $5 and up
Get your name in lights! Everyone who supports the project with $5 or more will be immortalized on a special founder’s wall on the Scan-A-Rama project website. You'll also get all the Kickstarter project updates and be able to stay tuned to our progress through my blog http://thegreatfredini.com/ .
Circle of Thanks - $10 and up
All backers of $10 more will also receive a limited edition art photo postcard of prints from the Scan-A-Rama project inscribed with a personal thank you!
Open Hardware 3D Scanner Supporter - $20 and up
Support the effort and I will share my learnings with the 3D community. I will post my plans for my scanning rig, the Scan-O-Tron 3000 on Thingiverse. I will also post a video tutorial on how to quickly and easily clean up a mesh from the rig for 3D printing. As an Open Hardware backer, you will have early and exclusive access to this video before the rest of the world. I will also publicly thank you on the Thingiverse /You Tube video pages in addition to the founders wall.
3D Portrait Digital Download - $25 and up
Do you have your own 3D printer and want a 3D scan of yourself, your kids or loved ones to print out yourself? Backers at this level will not only receive thanks, they will be invited to come to one of our events to get scanned and will be able to download a 3D print ready STL file of themselves.
Freak of your Choice - $50 and up
Can’t make it to NYC to get scanned? We still have something for you! Select your favorite sideshow or burlesque performer print. Look for new scans to be posted throughout the month in our project updates. By the time the Kickstarter ends you will have the choice from at least a dozen prints to choose from!
Custom 3D Portrait - $60 and up
Backers at this level will be invited to one of our events in the next year- either in Coney Island or Manhattan to be 3D scanned. Scans will be sized approximately 1:14, so a 6′ tall person will be scaled to ~140mm and others will be proportionately smaller. You will then be mailed a standard resolution (.25mm layer height or thinner) custom 3D print in the color of your choice.
2 or 3 Person High Res print - $100 and up
You will be invited to one of our scanning events in Coney Island or Manhattan to be scanned as a group with your loved ones. Your 1:14 scale group portrait will be printed at the highest quality setting (.1mm layer height) in the color of your choice, and mailed to you.
18" Luna Park Tower 3D print
Its hollow center will contain a mysterious Coney Island power object, making this a powerful talisman of merrymaking. Comprised of four 3D prints for a total of over 20 hours of print time, this miniature architectural marvel can be yours!
Family Pack - $220 and up
Four high res scans and prints! Get your whole family or group of best friends printed! This package deal will give you four separate prints in the color of your choice at the highest possible setting, with a group discount.
Lecture and Demonstration- $600 and up
I will come to your school, company, university, meetup or event and lecture, demonstrating my techniques for 3D scanning, file clean up, and slicing them for 3D printing. This fee covers travel to anywhere within 120 minutes of New York City, or if you will provide transportation fees I will travel even further. If travel is unreasonable I’m also happy to conduct a Google Hangout with remote parties.
School Fundraiser Lecture & Scan-a-thon - $1000 and up
This package is for schools from elementary to high school age (within 120 minutes of NYC) and includes a lecture/demonstration on 3D printing and scanning, combined with a scanathon where we will scan students and families. If the school has 3D printers they can print the scans themselves, and if you want items for a school auction, we will provide up to 6 family portrait prints for your school auction!
Scan-A-Rama Party - $3000 and up
Hosting the party of the century and want a unique remembrance for your guests? Coney Island Scan-A-Rama will come to you! For backers at this level, I will come to your event anywhere within 90 minutes of NYC and scan you and your guests! After the party you will receive up to 30 prints. Please note that our scanner requires an indoor space without direct sunlight to function.
Risks and challenges
In order to get 3D portraits, backers will have to visit one of our events. To make it as easy as possible for people to claim rewards, we will begin keeping hours at our space in Coney Island this summer and into the fall and winter. Additionally, we will be applying to New York Makerfaire and will hold events in Manhattan throughout the whole next year so that all our backers can get scanned and receive their 3D portraits. We will do our best to make it as easy as possible for you to claim your rewards!
Aside from scanning, print time is our biggest concern. A high resolution multi person 3D print can take over 12 hours. With the fundraising goals we have set, we will be purchasing up to four printers to ensure we have the bandwidth to deliver reliable quality that meets our standards. Obviously, the bigger a success the campaign is, the longer a wait time it may take for prints to be delivered to backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes- the scanner is a Kinect controller from an XBox. It uses infrared light. The Kinect shoots out an array of infrared dots and gets distance measurements for each of them. The software turns this into a 3D model. Project update #4 will give you a good idea of what it is like to be 3D scanned: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fredini/coney-island-scan-a-rama/posts/538967
No, we will send you your figurine as soon as we scan and print you. A duplicate statue will be printed for the Luna Park installation.
