Hi, I'm Frederik Busch. In the 80s I lived in a Catholic boys' boarding school in the Black Forest, Germany. I was rather lonely, but had a few own green lilies in our four-bed room. Once I watered the plants and thought to myself: "You are my only friends." Apparently even an eleven-year-old boy can be a drama queen. My mother studied pharmacy and botany and taught me many plant names early on. She also introduced me to the art of creating herbarium books. But I was more interested in carnivorous plants.

My love for plants persists to this day. Since 2008 I have been photographing plants in German companies. I observed how the plants arrange themselves with their surroundings, and through a tongue-in-cheek combination of text and image, transformed them into sensitive, lovable, and dignified creatures. Each plant received a name and special characterization which will make you smile. You may have seen some of my plant images in Vice, Monopol, brand eins, or Der Greif. After almost ten years of botanical fieldwork, the portraits are finally ready to be published in a luxurious art book.

This hardcover edition has been carefully designed by PBLC Design from Hamburg and will—with your help—be published by the renowned German art press Kehrer Verlag

WHY OFFICE PLANTS?

Humans are not the only entities in the “functioning office.” Cacti, dracaena trees and scheffleras populate medical practices, advertising and job agencies, in order to bring a little “life” between the stacks of files and the computer screens. That these are in fact living organisms is a reality all but ignored. Office plants often end up as mere things, their right to sustenance—that little bit of water—is hardly taken seriously.

Ingrid isn't giving up. / Ingrid gibt nicht auf.
Ingrid isn't giving up. / Ingrid gibt nicht auf.

In my book, I show portraits of such plants in their operative states. Portraits which discover office-botany with proper names and brief characterizations, and in which we quickly realize that these plants are indeed “human beings as well,” their tragicomic existence interwoven in everyday questions about relationships, music and fitness. That their daily life is not designed all that paradisiacally, is unquestionable. The humoristic approach however allows us to change our perception, to confront these plants as individuals, simply as fellow creatures and not just mere things that submit to the civilizational superiority of the human species.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Me and my team take pride in the excellent design and manufacturing of the book. You can already take a look at it online—just click here. (It looks really good, don't you think?) For a better understanding of the look and feel, let me give you an overview about the features of the German Business Plants book:

  • Surbalin hardcover with embossed title & frontispiece
  • Thread stitching
  • Printed on 150g Munken Lynx paper in Germany
  • 112 pages
  • Bi-lingual: English & German
  • Introduction by Jacob Birken
  • Essay by Annika Wind
  • Format: 8.1 × 9.8 inches / 20,5 × 25 cm
This is the embosser that made your book cover so beautiful.

The linen-like board with the cover image alludes to historical botanical books. The whole design is very minimal and the team at PBLC put a lot of attention towards detail and a strong consistency in composition. Thus it has a very charming, yet minimal appeal.

ABOUT ME

So you know a lot about the book by now. Let me also tell you something about myself: I'm a media artist and photographer living in Hamburg, Germany. My education took place at the University of Arts in Berlin (UdK), the State University of Art and Design (HfG), and the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. Since I work as a photographer, my work has been exhibited in Europe at Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Wilhelm Hack Museum Ludwigshafen, Kunstverein Heidelberg, Kunstverein Kopenhagen, Heussenstamm Galerie Frankfurt, Lothringer 13 München, Schwules Museum* Berlin and Haus am Lützowplatz Berlin.

In 2011, I received a special recognition from the Abisag Tüllmann Foundation for my photo series S23. Furthermore, my cooperations with Kerstin Greiner for the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin received the German Journalist Award (Deutscher Journalistenpreis) and have been shortlisted for the Henri Nannen Award. I am also teaching at art schools and universities all over Germany.
