The Emoji Translation Project

Hi Emoji Dick Backers!

I just launched a new emoji-related Kickstarter project I thought you might be interested in -- its to build the world's first emoji translation engine:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fred/the-emoji-translation-project

To build any translation engine requires massive amounts of text that exists in both languages, which are sometimes called parallel texts.

There’s plenty of content around the web in English, but there’s not that much in emoji (except Emoji Dick, of course). Thats why we’re raising money on Kickstarter: we want to pay people to translate sentences into emoji. We will then use those sentences to train a translation engine powered by statistics and machine learning.

We've got a goal of $15,000 and already have some great traction, but would to tell you more if you're interested.

For backers support we're creating an emoji phrase book, to help people learn this new language:

Here are some sample phrases we've been working with:

Anyway, please check it out and thanks for taking a read!

More Emoji Research & A really fun interview about Emoji Dick!

Hi Backers!

First, I did an interview with a Letras Libres, a Mexican literary magazine about Emoji Dick:

It is really one of my favorite things anyone has ever done on the book, so I wanted to make sure you all saw it!

A New Emoji Project, Soon

Second, and something I'm super excited about -- I'm working on a new emoji project with my friend Chris Mulligan that will hopefully be even more interesting than Emoji Dick and need your help.

I know, you're probably thinking we've hit peak emoji, and you might be right, so this new project may be my last, but I think it may be the best yet. We'll probably eventually launch it as a Kickstarter project with some great rewards.

We'll need some of your time, say 10-20 minutes in the next couple of weeks. You'll be writing emoji for research purposes, so if you're interested -- get in touch, just drop me an email: fcb@fredbenenson.com and I'll tell you more and get you signed up!

Thanks,

Fred

PS: I made a twitter bot that spits out dreams in emoji, so consider following it :)

Another project you might appreciate...

Hi guys,

I just got a heads up about another Moby-Dick-themed Kickstarter project which is a card game based off the book, called "Moby Dick, or, The Card Game":

I figured you might be interested! I backed it :)

Greetings backers,

The Library of Congress acquisition of Emoji Dick stirred up quite a lot of interest in our little project.

So for posterity, I wanted to pass along links on places where Emoji Dick was written up over the last couple of months:

It also made an appearance on the Today Show:

Thanks again for all your support over the years!
